UNITED BIBLE CLASS.—The above class which has been conducted by Mr Wheldon during the winter months, concluded its in- teresting and instructive series of studies, last Friday evening. The course of study which began last November, has been of a roost wide nature, yet most helpful to all. Beginning with that instinct in man which told him inhisputedly of some higher power than his own, Mr Wheldon ably traced the growth of rengion through the ages down to present day Christianity. This study could not fail to impress one with the great need of foreign missions, as it so clearly showed how npwr nil as nations really were to each other and the one God. During the lat t ter months Mr Wheldon laid "God" the ■ basis of study, and revealed to the class very clearly His great loving and personal nature. He also showed the innate constitution of the human soul, and how a sense of depen- dence and moral accountability—constitu- ting a religious instinct universally preva- lent—is natural to man; and hence the rea- son why man, especially when in trouble, im- pulsively seeks some higher power. Mr Wheldon showed the impossibility of logic- ally proving the existence of God, and yet by pure Reason he clearly showed that God was as really existent as ourselves, though we being finite were naturally incapable of fully comprehending the infinite. These stll diM, besides being so instructive and help- ful, have served to bring the members of the various churches nearer each other in sym- pathy and aim while preserving all the neccessary distinction of sect and creed. In tendering to Mr Wheldon their heartiest thanks for the evident trouble he had taken with the class, it was the earnest desire of all present that he woud again act as tea- cher next winter, when the class re-united in October. PRESENTATION TO MR PHIL DANIEL.—On Monday evening last. at 8.15 p.m., a smok- ing concert was held at Priory street school- room, the occasion being the presentation of a valuable travelling bag by the Carmarthen Orpheus Glee Society to their young and talented conductor, Mr P. R. Daniel, A.R.C.O., on his departure for Llandilo. There was a very large attendance, and a splendid programme had been arranged. Mr J. F. Morris, president of the Society, occu- pied the chair. At. the outset, letters ex- pressing regret at absence, and best wishes for the conductor's future, were read from Mr D. H. Jones, The Avenue, vice-president of the Society, and Mr W. A. Jones, London, the first secretary of the Society. The pro. items, was then proceeded with :—Pianoforte solo, Master Tom Lloyd; song, "Framed in Oak," Mr Titus Lewis; song, "Off to Phila- delphia," Mr Dan Bartlett; song, "The Deathless Army," R.ev Aldred Williams (enr cored); reitation, "The Dandy Fifth," Mr Fred Brigstocke; song, "The Longshore- man," Mr Meudwy Davies. The presentation was then made. In making the presenta- tion, the Chairman, in some well-chosen remarks, said that the departure of such a talented musician as Mr Daniel had proved himself to be, meant a loss to Carmarthen in general and to the Society in particular. He had shown himsellf a conductor of no mean albilitv, and it did seem a pity that he should now leave after having brought the musical standard of the Society to such a high pitch. Being a native of Caimiarthen, he was proud that they had another brilliant musician bred and born in the town who was following in the footsteps of the late Mr Brinley Richards. He trusted that Mr Daniel would be as successful in his musical career in the future, as he had been in the past. In con- tending his remarks, the chairman, on behalf of himself and the Society, wished their late conductor God-sipeed. The Rev Aldred Wil- liams, Curate of St. John's Church, endorsed all that had been said by the chairman. Mr Daniel, in replying was visibly affected. He said that before tendering his resignation he had given the matter his closest considera- tion. Having accepted the post of organist Llandilo. he had hoped that he would still be able to retain the position of conductor to the Orpheus, but he had found since that that Was quite "tan impossibility. Therefore, with great reluctance, he (had resigned. In conclusion, he thanked them for the kind words which had been said, for the support whciih the Society had given him, and for the very valuable present which he would always cherish. The programme was them continued as follows:—Song, Mr David Thomas; comic song, "It's a different girl-again," Mr D. E. Jones (encored); chorus. "On the Ram- parts," Glee S defy: recitation, "How Bill Adams won the Battle of Waterloo" (by request), Mr J. F. Morris; song, "0, na bvddai'n haf o hv-d," Mr Willie Owen song, "Father O'Flvnn," Mr Meudwy Davies. A vote of thanks to the Chairman for so ably presiding having been carried, the proceed- ings terminated with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne," all present Joining Bands.
