ATTEMPT TO BURN A GLEBE HOUSE…
ATTEMPT TO BURN A GLEBE HOUSE AND TO ASSASSINATE A CLERGYMAN. (From the Dublin Evening Mail.) Seldom has it fallen to our lot to record a more diabolical deed, or one more calculated to bring disgrace upon our common country and our common nature, than that which we now grieve to be compelled to publish. On Sunday night last, about the hour of mid- night, the out-oflices connected with the glebe of Cloone, in the county of Leitrim, burst out into a flame in several parts. The inmates of the glebe-house, consisting of the Rev. A. Hogg, curate of the parish, and his family, had retired to rest, unconscious of their danger, till they were alarmed by one of the servant maids, who provi- dentially started from her sleep, and saw the whole yard apparently in a blaze. The dwelling-house and offices, we ought to observe, are all connected together in a kind of square, and being roofed with thatch or shingles afforded an easy transmission for the flamca, so that scarcely a hope could be indulged of saving any part, when once igiiited, from destruction. The first impulse, of Mr and Mrs Hogg was to rush into the yard, and open the doors of the stables and cow house, to preserve the poor animals that were fastened within from being suffocated. Whilst thusiengag,-d, a party of armed men. were heard entering the wicket gate, leading from the front avenue into the yard, and Mr Hogg instantly fired in the direction, but without seeing any person on account of the denseness of the smoke. The party having retreated, Mr Hogg determined, trusting in that gracious Providence which alone could defend" him in such an extremity, to cross a deep rivtr which flows past the glebe, and to seek the aid of his neighbour Mr Claudius West, who hves a few hundred yards distant He crossed the river, accompanied by a man servant and had scarcely reached the opposite side when two shots were fired at him in quick succession, which actally splashed the water up round him. Having amved at ""r West a residence in safety he was instantly admitted and received the prompt aid of that 'worthy gentleman and all his household. Two messengers were dispatched to the village of Cloone (nearly a mile distant) for, tile police, and Mr West and Mr Hogg returned across the rivet to the burning glebe, where it was almost doubtful whether Mrs Hogg and her servants would be found alive. Happily, however, it appears that the mur- derous incendiaries, being disappointed of their chief design, of killing Mr Hogg, had departed and the great object now remained of endeavouring to stop the progress of the devouring fire. Through the great exertions of the little band this, we arc glad to say, was accomplished. The communication was, with much diffi- culty, cutoff between the offices and the dwelling-house- and the wind having been changed by Him who rnletlC the storm, all further progress of destruction was staved even before the pol,Ce, with aid from the village, could" arrive. An immense quantity of turf, hay, and oats wa* lost, and the place is now a sad scene of desolation but gratitude to Almighty God cannot but be the feeling of every number of this persecuted family on compaW the imminent danger they were in with the almost miraculous preservation of their lives. It may be askc* what was the cause of all this tiend-like display of n»a); and no answer can be given except the deep r„ spirit of opposition to every thing Protestant w* 2 • now gaining ground ou every side. MASDEU WINE. rijfI )]I @ Th'1L WRIIIIAMS, TT CALLS the attention of consumers of Wine, whether as an article of health or luxury, to this now universally celebrated WINE. and to those who desire a cheap, mellow, vinous, and durable article, nothing com- bining all these properties has heretofore been placed before the PtiWWe: the senafave properties of this Wine, and particularly to persons of a bilious habit, are not slighlly to he overlooked for, in consequence of possessing in its pure state not more than abgtit 8 per cent of spirit. and from the application of certain proportions of Gypsum to the fruit before being pressed, it has less acid than any wine imported. Its durability has been full.* tested by the resident Partner of the French House in London, having bottled it for three consecutive years, thereby proving its soundness against any lapse of time, and that it deposits a good and firm crust and retains its colour; but being devoid of that acridity which belongs to all low wines, it is equally applicable for immediate use. As the Wine takes its name from the Vineyards which produce it, and as the quantity grown is but small- advantage has been taken of the deserved popularity which this wine has obtained throughout the United Kingdom, to introduce the spurious mixturcs compounded at Cette, of Spanish red, and the low red Wines of France, and from that port, from Jersey and Guernsey, Havre, and Bottfcaux, every trashy mixture is introduced as Masdeu. The Public are cautioned against this extensive fraud; and not only against the knavery 0f imposing upon the public credulity an article having nothing about it in common with that which it pretends to represent, but equally against the term «t:ousillon" hich is prostituted to the same disgraceful Purposes of palming worthless mix- tures upon the Public. T. W. has arranged with the Proprietors of the Mas- deu Vineyards for a regular supply, and as the pure Wine is all branded in filii upon the head of every cask, T. W. invites inspection arid atrial. The price is fixed at 30s. per dozen, or as in London, 28s. per dozen Cash without discount, T. W. has a general assortment of Wine and Spirits, -Port. IN acknowledging' the almost universal testimo- nies that have been rendered in favour of FRASER'S MAGAZINE, the Publisher again pledges himself, that the uncompromising course, both in Literature and Poli- tics, which has already secured approbation, tlhalIbe steadily and undauntedly maintained. The December Nuftlticr concludes the Volume for the year 1836; and, as numerous promises of increased sup- port have been received, the new Subscribers are solicited to forward their Names to their several Booksellers, either in town or cotiniry, witli as little delay as possible. As much disappointment was experienced at the begin- ning of the year, from the disposal, in a few days, of the whole impression of the January umhert though a much larger edition than usual was printed, this notice at the present season deserves particular attention. It is believed that the principles of this Periodical are well known; at all events, they may be gathered from a perusal of the reprints, in a separate form, of Papers demanded for distribution, and of which many thousands have been sold. CONSUMPTION CURABLE, and the manner in C which Nature as well as Remedial Art operates in effecting- a healing process in Cases of Consumption, explained and illustrated by numerous rernarkable-atii interesting cases. By FRANCIS H. ItAMADGE, M.D. Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and Senior Physician to the Infirmary for Asthmas, Consumption, and other Diseases of the Chest, &c. London: LONGMAN AND Co. MUPHMS;]J @W £@&. MR. F. G. MOON, by appointment Publisher to the King, has had the honour of receiving (fiom Her Majesty the Queen the loan of the original paint iug from St. James's Palace, of that fine historical picture, The Defence of Saragossa," by Sir David Wilkie, R.A., now engraving by S. Cousins, Esq., A. R, A., which will be completed early nbxt Season. The heroine Augustina is represented on the battery in front of the Convent of Santa Engratia, where her lover being slain, she found her way to the station lie had occupied, stepped over his body, took her place at the gun, and declared she would avenge his death. The principal person engaged iu placing the gun is Don Joseph Palafox," who commanded the garrison during the memorable siege, but who is here represented in the hauit of a volunteer. In front of him is the Rev. Father Consolacion, an Agustin friar, who served with great ability as an engineer, and who, with the crucifix in his hand, is directing at what object the caunon is to be pointed. On the left side of the picture is seen Basilico Boggiero, a Priest, who was tutor to Palafox, celebrated for his share in the defence, and for his cruel fate when he fell into the hands of'the enemy. He is writing a despatch to be sent by a carrier pigeon, to inform their distant friends of the unsubdued energies of the place. The following beautiful poetical apostrophe to the exploits of Augnstina will be found in the first canto of Childe Harold, with the note appended :— Her lover sink-she sheds co ill-timetl tear; Her chief is slain-she fills his fatal post; Her fellows flee—she checks their base career j The foe retires—she beads the sallying host; Who can appease like her a lover's ghost? Who can avenge so well a leader's fall 1 What maid retrieve when man's flush'd hope is lost? Who hang so fiercely on the flying Gaul, Foil'd by a woman's hand, before a batter'd wall 1" Such were the exploits of the Maid of Saragossa, who by her valour elevated herself to the highest rank of heroines. When the author was at Seville she walked daily on the Prado, decorated with medals and orders. by command of the Junta. The exploits of Augustina, the famous heroine of both the sieges of Saragossa, are I) corded at length in one of the most splendid chapters of Southey's History of the Peninsular War. At the time when she first attracted notice, by mounting a battery where her lover had fallen, and working a gun in his room, she was in her 22d year, exceedingly pretty and in a soft feminine style of beauty. She has further had the honour to be painted by Wilkie, and alluded to in Wordsworth's dissertation on the Convention (mis- named) of Ciutra, where a noble passage concludes in these word :—- Saragossa has exemplified a melancholy, yea, a dismal truth—yet consolatory and full of joy— that when a people are called suddenly to fight for their liberty, and are sorely pressed upon. their best field of battle is the floors upon which their children have played the chambers where the family of each man has slept; opon or under the roofs by which they have been sheltered in the gardens of their recreation; in the street, or in the marketplace; before the altars of their temples, and among their congregated dwellings, blazing or uprooted The lovers of the fine arts, desirous of insuring su. I perior impressions of this splendid work, are respectfully requested to send their names, for early insertion, to the Publisher, or to their respective Printsellers, the proofs being limited, and will be delivered according to the order of subscription. The present Prices will shortly he raised; rendering it 'ess necessary to multiply impressions, which, too often circulated, do an act of great injustice to the refinement of the artist's work. Mr Moon's engagement with the engraver on this point will prevent such an occurrence, while it will he an assurance to the subscriber. Prints, £3 3^,— Proofs. £5 5i.-Before letters, £ 8 8s. Persons doubting the efficacy of this Medicine, may take a dose in the Proprietor's Shop before they purchase. The Proprietor earnestly recommends a trial of these Drops to persons afflicted with the above com- plaints but he does not introduce them as being an infallible cure (as many do) but is warranted in asserting their efficacy, from the extensive relief afforded in numerous cases of the above description. Constitutional Coughs of three, four, and more years standing, have been cured in the course of a week by the use of these Drops. In the Hooping and Chin Coughs it will be found equallj valuable. The virtues of Spermaceti having been known for centuries, it will be needless to make a comment upon a Balsam obtained from so valuable an article.
