MOON, by appointment Publisher 1- to the King, has had the honour of receiving from Her Majesty the Queen the loal) of the original painting from St. James's Palace, of that fine historical picture, II The Defence of Saragossa," by Sir David Wilkie, R.A., now engraving by _S. Cousins, Esq., A. R. A., which will be completed early next Season. The heroine Augustina is represented on the battery in front of the Convent of Santa. Engratia, where her ]over being slain, she found her way to the station he had occupied, stepped over his body, took her p!ace at the gun, and declared she would avenge his death. The principal person engaged iu placing the gun is Don Joseph Palafox,* who commanded the garrison during the memorable siege, but who is here represented in the habit of a volunteer. In front of him is the Rev. Father Consolacion, an Agustin friar, who served with great ability as an engineer, and who, with the crucifix in his hand, is directing at what object the cannon is to be pointed. On the left side of the picture is seen Basilico Boggiero, a Priest, who was ttitor to Palafox, celebrated for his share in the defence, and for his cruel fate when he fell into the hands of the. enetnv- He is writing a despatch to be sent by a carrier pigeon, to inform their distant frjends of tW unsubdued energies of the place. The following beautiful poetical apostrophe to the exploits of Augustina will be found in the first canto of Childe Harold, with the note appended :— •' Her lover sink*—she sheds no ill-timeil tear; Her chief is slain-she fills his fatal post, Her fellows flee-glic checks their base career The foe retires—she heads the sallying host; Who can appease like her a lover's ghost 1 Who can avenge so well a leader's fall ? What maid retrieve when man's flush'd hope is'lost? Who hang so fiercely on the flying Gaul, Foil'd by a woman's hand, before a batter'd wall?'' Such were the exploits of the Maid of Saragossa, who by her valolir elevated herself to the highest rank of heroines. When the author was at Seville she walked d&ily on the Prado, decorated with medals and orders, by command of the Junta. The exploits of Augustina, the famous heroine of both the sieves of Saragossa. are r, corded at length in one of the m'ost splendilt chapters of Southey's History of the Peninsular War. At the time when she first attracted notice, by mounting a' battery where her lover had fallen, and working a gun in his room, she was in her 22d year, exceedingly pretty and in a soft feminine style of beauty. She has further had the honour to be painted by Wilkie, and alluded to in Wordsworth's dissertation on the Convention (mis- named) of Cintra, where a noble passage concludes in these word :—' Saragossa has exemplified a melancholy, yea, a dismal truth—yet consolatory and full of joy- that when a people are called suddenly to fight for their liberty, and are sorely pressed upon, their best field of battle is the floors upon which their children have played the chambers where the family of each man has slept upon or under the roofs by which they have been sheltered; in the gardens of their recreation; in the street, or in the market place; before the altars of their temples, and among their congregated dwellings, blazing or IIprooted. The lovers of the fine arts, desirous of insuring sit- perior impressions of this splendid work, are respectfully requested to send their names, for early insertion, to the Publisher, or to their respective Priuisellers, the proofs being limited, and will be delivered according to the order of subscription. The. present Prices will shortly he raised rendering it less necessary to multiply impressions, whicn; too often circulated, do an act of great injustice to the retinement of the artist's work. Mr Moon's engagement with the engraver on this point will prevent such an occurrence, while it will be an assurance to the subscriber. Prints, £ 3 3s.— Proofs, £5 5s.-Before letters, X8 8s. [FORM FOR INSERTION.] Sir,- Be pleased to insert mi/name fort copy fromthe Queen's Picture, The Defence of Saragossa." Name, liesidence. Date. To Mr Moon, 20, Threadneedte Street. NOW NO ITCiO is hereby given, that if any person or persons will apprehend the said David Evans, and lodge him in any one of his Majesty's Prisons, he or they shall be paid the above Award, by applying to D. JOHN ARMSTRONGS [bnW ¡rnls[ba -11 care not how I am physicked, so it be not by the adventure of a Quack, but advice of a Physician, who I am sure will prescribe no more for me than may consist with my safety, and need doth require."— Old Divine. ^^HE Possessor of the Prescriplion from which I these Pills are prepared, solely for him, by Mr John T. Eddy, a scientific Chemist, obtained it from the late Dr. ARMSTRONG, (Lecturer at St. Thomas's Hospital, London and Author of the celebrated Works on Typhus and Scarlet Fever, &c. &c.) for his Wife, who iti 18*27 became the Doctor's patient, when evidently labouring under confirmed Liver complaint, and to all appearance in a deep decline. She had not long taken the Pills, at the prescribed intervals, before she was perfectly restored to health ■ and has, with the occasional use of them, con- tinned free from pain, and in perfect health and cheerful spirits ever since. The Possessor of this admirable Prescription (a Gen- tleman of private fortune) having distributed the Pills with the most extraordinary success amongst the Poor in many Counties in England, in 1835 detei mined to offer them, at a price, to the public; his personal observation and experience having convinced him, that they would prove a real bbssinsjf taken according to the Physician's Advice and Directions in the wrapper, to all-both old and ynmi.r, children as well as adults; women pregnant, and alter the mouth of coil lineincol -who suffered from an inaciive Liver and thence all the attendant miseries of Indigestion BILIOUS Affections (so called); Fla- tulence, Jaundice, Dropsy; Pain in the Sides and under the Shoulder Btades; Difficulty of Breathing; distress- ing Sensation of Choking; with the Complexion, and white of the eyes, yellow. The very first two pills generally afford such relief- such ease from everv distressing pain-that the patient is at once surprised and delighted. The Medicine is gentle, though certain in its benign effects. The quantity prescribed to be taken is small, aud not oftener than alternate nights. The following Letter has been addressed to Mr Eddy by one of the Agents at Birmingham. Sir, Birmingham, March ISth, 1836. The character which I have received of the efficacy of Dr. John Armstrong's Liver Pills. induces me to antici- pate that a very considerable sale will be effecled here. A Clergyman residing in this town has stated to me that lie attributes the speedy revival of his family of six children and a visitor from a fever, to the application of the Liver Pills. This opinion was founded upon the circumstance that the only child to which lie did not give them, on sickening of the fever, had it very severely, and lay above a week in a very dangerous state, evincing alaiming symptoms which not one of the others had. I have likewise received similar testimonies of theirefficacy from other parties of respectability. I am, Sir, Yours very respectfully, I WILLIAM HODGETTS. In Boxes, Is. lid. and 2s. 9d. each.
