Just as the light was fading a lurid glow lit up the sky for miles around. At first it was thought that it was only the Dowlais Works, but it was very soon found that a fire of no mean dimensions was in progress. The Aber- dare Fire Brigade were communicated with, but it was found that the farm was just a few yards outside the boundary of Aberdare. Inspector Davies, ot Aloun- tain. Ash, and Mr. W. G. Thomas (sur- veyor) were consulted as to whether the engine could get up the steep declivity. which in some parts is about one in four. However. Captain Berry tried it, and got there, the stiffest portion of the journey being traversed backwards. On arriving at the Farm a large riel: was found well ablaze, and in 21 hours the fire had been subdued. Only "about one third of the rick was saved, but all the other ricks were undamaged. It is thought the ex- cessive heat of the past few days was the cause of the outbreak.
