THE TABLES TURNING.
THE TABLES TURNING. WELL done, South Wales, and North Mon- mouthshire, too is the verdict which all true-hearted Radicals will pronounce to-day. The reaulta of the pollings have, in some instances, more than justined expectations. In South Glamorganshire Mr AMHUR J. WtLUAMS had a formidable candidate in the peraon of Mr DiLLWYN LLEWELYN, and yet he defeated him by a large majority. Mr LLEWELYN, it is true, is a Conservative, and therefore must expect to be defeated in a decidedly Liberal constituency. In such a case we cannot afford to take per- MM! merits or personal popularity into account. We are bound to consider political opinions, and the leader under whom-the candidate, if elected, will serve. Otherwise Mr LLEWELYN is one of I men wliomati who know anything of him! wouJd iikc to help rather than hinder. We do not admit that he is a politician. Hia speeches, at all events, ao'orded no evidence whatever of any grasp of political questions or of his knowledge of political history. It is to be regretted thn,t he and other Conser- vative candidates should liave helped to bolster up or give circulation to those travesties of history which are a disgrace even to the lowest forms ofToryintelIi- gencc They are about the most flippant and ignorant productions ever hatched for purposes of deception. They are simply a "pack of ties." Those who take them into their service must be more anxious to serve their own personal ambition than to spread accurateknowledge and enlightenment. Barring these drawbacks, the contest for the Southern Division was fairly fought, without acrimony on either side. The majority of 594 by which Mr WiLMAMS secured the seat was heavy and substantial, and no man deserves it better. As a sound Radical he expounded his views with great force and clearness, and we believe he will render great service to the Principality in Parliament. He hnd, otcoursc, theusual opposition, theChurch and the publicans, and also many tenant- farmers. These made up a large proportion of his Opposition, and constituted a strong and powerful band which he had to. over- come by wo!I directed efforts. Mr WiLLiAMs was, however, equal to his task. He was most indefatigable in his canvassing, and speedily earned the good wi)l of the electors by his outspokenness and invariable courtesy. In the Rhondda VaMey the contest was of a widely different character. Here we had two Radicals opposing each other. From the very commencement this opposition lias been a misfortune. As the choice of the Three Hundred Mr FRED. DA via was quite justined in taking the neld, and he must be complimented on having fought his battle gallantly. He deserved, if he did not have success, and probably some facts may yet be brought to light by way of showing why the result did not ratify the selection which his supporters made when they invited him to stand. The rioting and intimidation are not good features in the struggle to look back upon and in cahn moments even those who perpetrated them must see tnat they were most unjustifiable weapons to employ, and that they may even have given an unfair advantage to one over the other. At the same time, the result bears out what we said before any candidate was chosen, that the Rhondda is one of those constituencies to winch we must naturally look for a direct representative of wage-earning labour. Mr ABRAHAM'S majority of 867 is sub- stantial enough to put this beyond all doubt. And there can be little doubt that, but for Ilia Tory con- nections, he wouid have been selected by the Three Hundred at the outset. However, the constituency have shown a decided prefer- ence to him over his opponent, and we can only hope that he will follow in the steps of Messrs. BuRT and BpoADHURST, and be a faithful supporter of Mr GLADSTONE'S administration. We have nothing whatever to say against him or his candidature, except that he was not the choice of the organised committee. Our policy is to accept the decisions of the Liberal Associations in s"ch selections, without regard to the mere per- sonality of the candidate. Now, however, a larger constituency has decided upon Mr ABRAHAM, and their choice ends the discussion. The contest in the Eastern Division was ofaverydifferentchajacter. MrALFREU THOMAS, it is true, had rather an awkward start on account of the secession of a strong body of Liberals favourable to the candida- ture of Mr BOWEN ROWLANDS. This Split inspired a young Tory to make a run for the seat, but Mr GODFREY CLARK ought to have been advised at the very outset that he had no possible chance of success. Even had Mr TaoMAS and -c_O- .1.7 toom wnatever tor a. Tory. Happily, however, Mr RowLANDS's sup- porters gracefully gave way, and their champion withdrew from a. connict in which he would certainly have been defeated. With a. majority of 2,800 Mr THOMAS and his friends have reason to be well satiatied. Half the number of votes recorded for the Liberal candidate in this instance would have placed him at the head of the poll. The result of the polling in North Monmouth- shire Is highly gratifying a3 a. signal proof of the complaint frequently made that the county was formerly misrepresented. Now that the inhabitants have been qualified to vote, Mr ROLLS lias been dismissed from service by an overwhelming majority. Mon- mouthshire is not a Conservative county by any means. Mr PptCE's 5,693 as against Mr RoLLS's 5,226 puts this beyond dispute, and as we have every reason to believe that the poliing to-day in the Western Division will result in a brilliant victory for Mr WARMINGTON, we may well congratulate the county upon its emancipation from political slavery, and the opportunity of speaking in the name of the people who inhabit it, and not in that of a feAr titled families. In Breconshire, too, Mr MAiTLANu has done much more than merely hold his own. His majority of 1,502 over a powerful opponent, whose varied artinces in tile shape of post- cards and other angling rods have availed him nothing, will make him feel that there is no mistake whatever as to his having his con- stituency behind him to back him up well in any support which he may give to tlie Liberal party. But it is in West Car- marthenshire that many will see most strikingly the result of the extension of the franchise to the counties. Viscount EMLYN has been unseated by Mr \V. R. H. PowELL—both popular men, no doubt, but yet occupying different positions. Mr PowELL was at the commencement of the struggle warmly complimented on undertaking to contest the seat held by Lord EMLYN, and the great obstacles :n the way of his success were everywhere acknowledged. His vic- tory, however, ia complete. He has polled 4,566 votes against his opponent's 2,940, thus winning the seat by a, handsome majority of 1,626. East Carmarthenshire will surely not be behind this. Lord EMLYN is, in many reapecta, a very capable man, but he is out of sympathy with the Welch people. He represents a small minority, and even that minority imperfectly. These overwhelming majorities won in the counties of Wales, and in many hitherto Tory districts of England, show to what a smalt extent the Tones have been the real and true representatives of the people among whom they Uve. They have been speaking for them for generations, yet only misrepresenting their real necessi- ties. Happily we ahall soon learn what the working classes in our village districts really want.
ELECTORAL NOTES.
ELECTORAL NOTES. THE TORYISM OF SOUTH WALES. ALL the Tory hopes and vaunts have been crumpled up like a sheet of tissue paper. The nonsense which has been ao freely spoken and written during the last few weeks about Wales being Tory at heart has receded such a reply as it deserved. Lord Salisbury made tlus wonderful discovery, I think, and announced it to the world at Wrexham. If the heart be really Tory, all I can say is that the pulses are strangely out of beat, and the circulation is about the most extraordinary that can be conceived. I should say, indeed, that it must be a particularly diseased heart. Fancy the people of a country being Tory at heart 'It hen the elections of the last few days have terminated in the manner !.hey l)avc by the return of a band of staunch Radicals. However, I suppose we shall have the same old cry spread about at every election, and the same form of mild self-delusion backed up by the same angry bitterness will be noticeable. The stupid party have always been gullible, but I can hanHy remember a case in which their comi- cal gullibility has been so absolutely founda- tionless. However, so far as I am con- cerned, I have no objection to their ranting about the heart being Tory so long as the mem&o's are Radical. EVAPORATION OF TORY ZEAL. IT is wonderful to notice how completely the zea) of local Tories has evaporated under the influence of the election results of the last few days. I have been particularly amused to notice it. When the borough returns were coming in, and the Tories had over-persuaded themselves that they were going to have a victory, they assumed an air of simply insolent con- fidence* and infinite superiority. When, however, the county returns be!al1 to swell up the Liberal numbers, they changed their demeanour to that: of almost abject misery. A)I the enthusiasm was gone, and not a mau among them could muster up even a smile. As the news of one Liberal victory after another has come to hand, their courage haa sunk rapidly lower and lower to below freezing point, and the last semblance of hopefulness has disappeared. The change is the more marked by reason of the contrast, it recalls, and the truth is the more bitter in consequence of the delicious draughts of false- hood they had so greedily swnllowed during the earlier days of the election. They were so overpowenngly confident that the cruel truth lias cut them all the keener. They had dwelt so lingeringly ana fondly upon the powers of Tory deception and mis- representation, and were so convinced that tile votes of the boroughs were proof of these weapons being keen and true, that the undeceiving process has been wretchedness itself. There is no remorse like that of a. knave who finds his plots and schemes are useless and—of course in a political sense —this is much the feeling from which the Tories are suffering, and they can't help shewing it. ELECTION ROWDYISM. IT is a great pity that there should have been so much rowdyism in connection with one or two of Wednesday's contests. It is an unfortunate thing that some people can- not help thinking they can best let oft superfluous enthusiasm in noise and general violence. To certain classes there would seem to be, indeed, a particular pleasure in going for" somebody or other when ex- cited. It is not much matter who is to be the object of such solicitous attentions, nor, indeed, whether the object be animate or inanimate, if one may judge by Wednes- day's proceedings. A public man or a public-house seems to have been equally weIc'mM from the point of view of the attacker—any thing which would be amenable totheinnuenceof bricks. Some of the scenes were most disgraceful, and tlie wonder would appear to be that more people were not hurt, and that the injuries were not in many cases more serious than they actually proved. I do not know whom these rumans may have thought they were benedtting by such violent conduct but this much is certain, that they did in fact bring the greatest discredit upon the aides to which they were nominally attached. A coward who hurls a big stone in the hope of hitting a political opponent is none the less a dastard than any other bully who hurls bricks around indiscrimi- nately without the incentive of party fanaticism. I hope the police will secure them, and that they will be taught that political enthusiasm must not be taken to include a policy of general brick-heaving. TO-DAY'S POLLS. THE result in North Monmouthshire has made the Tories of the Western Division even more uncomfortable than before—if that was possible T.nd the same applies to the enect of Lord Emiyn's rout in West Carmarthen upon the prospects in the Eastern Division. The idea of Sir Marteine Lloyd going to win in a con- stituency far more Radical than that in which Lord Emiyn has failed is altogether too ludicrous. It is a pity that the worthy barjnet had not more discretion than ever to be dragged into a struggle from which he can gain so little credit, and absolutely no a?Iv?nta?—??J———?-? t-—.?si Should be soundly thrashed as a Tory candidate. By the bye, if lie does not I do though perhaps, we should construe the word" ad- vantage in a slightly dinerent manner. However, he lias not long to wait, and he will not be sorry. He has not found the candidature altogether so enjoyable as not to be exceedingly glad that it has come to an end. Mr B. F. Williams, the gentleman wh", under very similar circumstances, is awaiting the happy despatch" in Western Monmouth differs from Sir Marteine in having been shrewd enough to see from the commencement the futility of his candida- ture, and in having effectually insured his banking account against this political ship- wreck. It has been more a part of professional business than anything else with him—and not very successful business either, as I have before pointed out, even from a purely professional point of view. Anyhow, these twin defeat- seekers will to-day gain the objects of their candidature, and will be released from further attention to the political affairs of tlie electors, whom they have wooed with equal zeal and futility. Their usual avoca- tions will not be longer broken in upon by political servitude, and their attentions, the one to Ills horses and guns, and tlie other to his briefs, will not be interfered with by the lighter and, as they probably consider them, the more trivial dissipations of the House of Commons. A WARNING. THE conduct of the voters in parts of East Glamorgan, the Rhondda, and South Glamorgan, may well serve as a warning to those of Western Monmouthshire and Eastern Carmarthenshire. There has been some indication of a belief that the conduct of tlie Tory party managers and the various methods of Tory misrepresentation, have suf- ficed to embitter the industrial classes and that therefore some kind of violence may be expected to-day, i do not believe this. I can understand that the party manoeuvres have embittered the working men. Any other result could hardly be anticipated. But I have too strong a belief in their good sense and powers of self-restraint to think that they will give way to such unseemly conduct as was shown in the three divisions of Glamorganshire. I do not think that the voters were responsible for this, and am sure that those who misbehaved were only a very insignifi- cant minority, inBuenced by feelings which were rather those of the rowdy than con- nected with politics. What the Liberal voters to-day have to bear in mind is that they are marching to a victory at the polls, and that it becomes them to show that moderation which best becomes those who triumph. They can afford to view with indifference any attempts which may be made to exasperate them. Let them strive to exercise restraint not only over them- selves but over all with whom they have influence. It should be the individual object of every voter to prove that he knows the value of his enfranchisement by entirely abstaining from any act which is not becoming to the orderly and decorous citizen. Every disturbance of the nature of those of Wednesday renects discredit not only upon the persons making it and the party to whom they n'ay belong, but also upon the entire constituency. AN ENERGETIC VOTER. As an instance of multiple voting, it is said that on Wednesday, Mr C. BL Williams, of Ruath Court, 6r?t voted at Caerphilly— I wiU not say for whom—then he went on to Merthyr, where he again voted. After- wards lie proceeded to Talybont, Brecon- shire, to vote, then to Abersychan, and after one or two other calls, he nnally found himself at the LIandau' polling station. Part of his railway journey Mr Williams accom- plished by special train.

¡ lSPECULI,'i WIRED.] I [BY OU? GALLEHY CORRESrOYDHXT.j THE f.ROWIH OF THK LIBERAL MAJORITY— HBEHAL TRIUMPHS IN THE COUKTIE.S— MR CALLAN AND THE PARNELLITJE MAJOMTIES—MR MtTCHELL KKTURX. LONDON, Thursday Night. At one time this afternoon the Liberal poll overtopped the combined forces of the Pamellites and the Conservatives. It was oniy for the space of half an hour, mure returns coming in from Ireland, and swamp- ing the British vote. But the nett result up to telegraphing is eminently satisfactory. The Libera! majority is 50, and doubtless will have grown by some units before you go to press. This is a state of things which has almost taken away the breath of the Libera!s equally with the Conservatives. For litttle more than a week, dating from Thursday last, I have been as the voice of one crying in the wilderness. Talking to Liberals, I was scarcely listened to with patience. Last Thursday, when the Reform Club was in mourning, and Liberals were in the depths of despair, 1 reiterated the expression —daily published in this column—that de- fection was beginning to arise in the boroughs but that it would be more titan compensated for by the steadfastness of Scotland, the loyalty of Wales, and the rush of the new electors in the counties. Matters have changed to-day, and there are many people who have discovered that the Liberals willhave a majority. The only question now is whether that majority will out- balance the combined forces of the Parnel- litcs and Liberals. It is quite possible that it may. But I am inclined tu ux the Liberal majority at between 70 and 30. If that be the case, all the more bitter will be the re- flections upon the self-seeking so-called Liberals who have lost six seats to the party. Six seats means 12 votes on a. division— sutticient, if the Liberal majority should touch 80, to save the integrity of the empire against the machinations of the allied forces. The Liberal victories have been gamed in all parts of the country—even in Hamp- shire, though it must be admitted that Lord Wolmer's victory is due to & rare case of two Conservative candidates cutting each others throats. Essex lias given its nrst Liberal to-day, having hitherto sent in three Conservatives. This makes half its representation, and to-day's omen is a good one. Shropshire is polled out, and in place of the four Conservatives returned to the last Parliament, it now returns three Liberals and a solitary Conservative. Nottinghamshire has varied the monotony of its Liberal returns by sending in a. Conservative. There are, how- ever, four Liberals already seated. Lord Ernlyn, who had the distinction of being one of the two Welsh Tories in the last Parliament, is now relegated to obscurity by Carmarthenshire. Gloucestershire, which sent back a. Liberal yesterday, has elected another to-day. As yet no Conservative has made a footing here. Derby still polls Liberal, so does Cornwall, and glorious Yorkshire yesterday added three to its as yet unbroken list of Liberals. The contest of Mr Callan in Louth has been wa-tched with exceptional interest. Mr CaUan has been beaten, but only after the whole resources of Mr Parnell, including his per- sonal attendance, had been brought to bear. This glimmer of electoral independence, although it come from so little reputable a quarter, has been hailed with satisfaction, and I really believe the Rouse of Commons would almost have welcomed Mr Callan if he had returned as the one man who had successfully stood up against the dictatorship of Mr Parnell. Thereisonefery signiticant feature in the elections in Ireland, of which we may be sure Mr Gladstone la taking careful note. It will be remembered that, just before the dissolution, a. powerful and wealthy body of gentlemen co-operated to establish a fund to provide Loyalist candidates to fight every seat in Ireland. This promise has to a, considerable extent been carried out, and what is noteworthy is the over- whelming majorities by which the Pamellites have carried the seats. In North Longford, for example, the return of which is just to hand, only 163 Loyalists gave their votes åupl 'tna'V-t>.u¥'g-her. indication of the proportions of numbers aa between Loyalists and Sepai-atists. The campaign against the encroachments of the Pamellites was based upon the impossible principle of Liberals and Conservatives sinking their dinerencies, and uniting in supporting a common candidate. Neverthe- less, the fact of the large majorities in favour of the Home Rulers exists and, whichever party be in power in the coming session, will have considerable weight upon the deliberations of Ministers. Among the hurry and excitement of suc- ceeding episodes of the genera] election, the return of Mr Mitchell Henry for Glasgow must not be lost sight of. Mr Henry is one of the few gentlemen who have given practical evidence of their interest in Ireland. Long ago he established in Galway one of the most beauttfu! residences in the country, and here, when privation pressed upon his neighbours, he was fertile in excuses for alterations and improvements necessitating the employment of labour. I have been to!d, by an Irishman who knows the locality, that had Mr Henry been left unmolested lie woutd have been returned triumphantly by the Galway men, but he had the misfortune to on'end Mr PameU by his outspoken refusal to submit to his dictation, and the feat went forth that he was to be dis- possessed. This is a bad thing for Galway, but it has proved an admirable thing for Mr Mitchell Henry. When his candida- ture for a division of Glasgaw was au- nounced, Mr Parnel! strained every effort to keep him out. A heavy Iriah vote was polled against him, but in spite of that he came in tirat, and will now enjoy the privilege at the comfort of deliverance from an invidious position.
