Charles Druffield and Thomas Bevan, stewards of Risca benefit club, were summoned before the county justices, at Newport; on Saturday, for having refused to pay 24 sick money to a mem- ber. The magistrates ordered the defendants to pay the money and 10s 6d costs. Mr G. T. Clark, Dowlais, was on Saturday re- elected chairman of the Merthyr Board of Guar- dians. Messrs R. H. Rhys, and J. Matthews were re-appointed vice-chairmen. Our Merthyr correspondent states that it is rumoured that the Plymouth Ironworks will shortly be re-started. Two Dowlais young men named Taliesin Davies and John Jones, were charged before the Brecon magistrates, on Saturday, with obstructing a rail- way porter on the Brecon and Merthyr Railway, and also with assaulting the official referred to. The offences were committed at Dolygaer Station, on Easter Monday. In the first case the defendants were finecip 6d and £3 2s 4d costs, and as to the assault the bench permitted the defendants to com- promise it by paying the assaulted porter R5 com- pensation. A desperate attempt to shoot a man was made in a house in Bute-road, Cardiff, on Saturday evening. After a dispute a foreign captain fired a revolvor at a boarding-house keeper named Clery. The latter fortunately stooped down, and the bul- let passed through his hat. The offender imme- diately ran out of tthe house, but was soon cap- tured. The Cardiff Board of Guardians, at their meet- ing, on Saturday, re-elected Mr Alderman David chairman, and Mr Jno. Evans, of Pengam, vice- chairman. A proposal brought forward by Mr Wm. Lewis for the election of a second vice-chair- man to succeed the late Mr Ely Evans was rejected. A motion by. Mr G. A. Stone, asking for au inquiry into the extraordinary charges pre- ferred against a nurse, who was recently dis- missed, was rejected by 9 to 4 in a meeting of thirty-nine guardians. It was, however, resolved to inquire into a charge against the Workhouse master of having neglected to report the intoxica- tion of a female official whom he was alleged to have locked up for a whole day. On Friday night a frightful explosion occurred at Cymmer, by which thirteen men were instan- taneously killed, and two severely injured. The men were working in the tunnel which is being constructed on the new line connecting Glyncorrwg and the Maesteg, Llynvi, and Ogmore section, it is stated that about 160 lbs. of dynamite and 50 lbs. of gun cotton exploded. Besides the sad loss of life, the damage. done by the explosion is very great, about 60 yards of the tunnel having been blown away. The Newport Guardians, at their meeting on Saturday, re-elected Mr P. Woodruff as chairman, and Mr G. B. Gething as vice-chairman for the ensuing year. Upon the proposition of Mr H. R. Evans, a memorial for presentation to the Local Government Board was adopted, praying that certain changes be made in the mode of electing guardians. The memorial asked that the Guar- dians should be elected for three years, and that- one-third of the number elected retire annually. A report from the Assessment Committee stated that the valuation of the union had been raised from R,276,554 to £ 328,818. Her Majesty the Queen, accompanied by the Princess Beatrice, returned from the Continent on Saturday, and arrived at Windsor Castle at a couple of minutes past seven.
