In accordance with a notice just issued stating that the 251st clause of the General Police and Improvement (Scot- land) Act would be put into force, and that the police had been instructed to arrest anv one guilty of a violation of the clause, a riveter named Morris has been fined 2s. 6d. at the Partick Police-court for uttering an oath in tha street. The manoeuvres of the army in the present year are ex pected to be on a somewhat larger scale than the last. It is understood that the grazing has been selected, and that it is now under survey. The officers entrusted with the duty of purchasing horses arc busy with their preparations, and it is probable that as many as three thousand will be purchased. -me dissatisfaction which was expressed on the first an- nouncement of Mr. Arthur Sullivan's appointment as Principal of the new National Training College for Music, at South Kensington, seems, the Manchester Guardian states, rather to increase than diminish, notwithstanding the state- ment that the authorities at the Royal Academy of Music are favourable to the nomination of their old pupil.; It is felt, even by the young composer's best friends, that it would have been wiser to place a man of greater age and experience at the head of the institution. An additional reason for holding this opinion is supplied by the belief that Mr. Sullivan's true mission is with his pen, and that his time would be better occupied as a composer than as teacher or conductor. The Colonial Secretary, the Manchester Guardian says, has just made an important decision affecting the relations of Canada and the mother country. Among the mea- sures passed in the House of Commons of that colony last session was one for creating a Supreme Court for the Dominion. At a late stage of the bill a private member introduced, and the Government accepted, a clause which debarred appeal to the Privy Council in England. The effect of this legislation is obvious. Its, adoption would sever one of the strongest links that bind the Dominion to the mother country. Lord Carnarvon has determined to advise her Majesty that that clause must be repealed, and an intimation to that effect either has been or will be sent to the Canadian Government. THE PEW SYSTEM.
THE PEW SYSTEM. The Liverpool Post says that the free and open church question has been further dvscusscd at a breakfast at the Compton Hotel, which was attended by about eighty gen- tlemen. A paper on the subject was read by the Rev. C. J. Hardman, of Christ Church, who expressed his surprise that any clergyman could reconcile it with his conscience to make over the pasture-ground, which is by every right common to all, to a few well-fed and favoured sheep, lea/ving the many, if they are ad- mitted at all, to be admitted on]'y on toleration." The appropriated pew system was denounced by the Rev. Mr. Fenton as an unmitigated nuisance, and Dr. Steele very nearly agreed with him. The Doctor, in the course of his spee ji. affirmed that St. Peter's C'hurch was, to all intents and purposes, free and open. For his own part, he would abolish pews altogether, and re store the church to the condition which existed in happirv days," when there were no seats at all, and places of worship were regarded more as oratories than as preaching houses.
THE ABBOTS RIPTON RAILWAY…
THE ABBOTS RIPTON RAILWAY DISASTER. The funeral of the two Misses Sanderson, of Bride House, Belford, Northumberland, killed in the accident, took place yesterday morning at the cemetery at Hunting- don, in the presence of a large concourse of spec- tators. The whole of the places of business, as well as private houses, were closed, and the hearses were preceded by all the medical men of the town. The coroner and the jury, and the fataily of the deceased young ladies followed in two mourning coaches. The double funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Hart Davies, vicar of St. Mary's. Round thb grave mere hun- dreds of the townspeople, and the coitins were literally covered with bouquets of choice flowers. f • The son of Mr. Dion Boucicault was buried in the afternoon, and it is said that his father proposes to build a large monument in the cemetery. All the injured are progressing satis- factorily. The father and mother of the deceased were unable to witness the public funeral ac- corded to their children, owing to their stili being con- fined to bed by the injuries they themselves sustained in the same accident.
NEIGHBOURS IN LONDON.
NEIGHBOURS IN LONDON. Mr. Humphreys, coroner for East Middlesex, ha.s held an inquiry respecting the death of Frances Hannah Ward, aged 28. Henry Thomas Ward, a wine oellarma,n, living at 86, Bridport-place, Hoxton, stated tha\ he had been separated from deceased, his wife, since the l¡th of last October. One of her sisters died in Colncy Hatch. -Chaxles Walters, landlord of the hou se, lo, Taber- nacle-row. St. Luke's, deposed that deceased had occupied the second-floor back since October 19th. He last saw her alive on the 15th November, and thinking she had gone altogether, advertised in a daily paper that unless she fetched her goods away within fourteen days they would be sold. On Monday last one of his other lodgers, wishing to purchase the goods, went- up to the room for that purpose, when, on opening the door, deceased was discovered hanging at the back, by the neck, to the rail, by means of a piece of old skirt. The body appeared perfectly dried up, and had evidently been there some weeks.—Elizabeth Lane, lodger in the next room, said he had not seen deceased alive for eleven weeks.—Dr. Lathbury stated that by the appear- ance of the body deceased must have been- dead several weeks, but how many it was impossible to say.-The jury returned a verdict of suicide whilst in a state of unsound mind.
