COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE LONDON, THURSDAY EVENING. The directors of the Bank of England at their weekly court to-day decictect to make no alteration in tufcir minimum rate of discount. The weekly return, issued this afternoon, shows the proportion of reserve to iiab iities to be 60'67. A fair demand for money has existed in the "open" discount market today, and although there is no quotable change in rates the tendency has been to harden. Bank Bills-2 and 3 month?, to 1 per cent; i months, ii 6 months, It per cent. I Trade Bills—2 and 3 mumhs, li per cent 4 months, 2 to 2j per cent; 6 months, 2¡, to 3 per cent. The commercial situation is without material change, and the markets generally are in no per- ceptible decree affected by war rumours. So far as stlipping is concerned, if there is a tendency any way it is for tiie better. The better classes or Australian wheat are being firmly held. English wheat which was gathered during the wet weather is coming to market in a very bad condi- tion. In the produce markets, good rehumg descriptions of sugar are very firm. Holders or petroleum and other oils are holding back s'ocks, but the nearest quotation for petroleum to-day is about 1-16 easier for all positions up to December. The fttock markets opened with a better tend- ency, Console at one period of the day marking an advance of per cent, but subs quently receiiug to last night a quotations, namely, Uåà to 96 for money and the account. iNew and Keuuced Three per Lents were at Wi to 94i. India four per Cent Bonds rose to 102J. Foreign Stocks 4 were ail better at the opening, but the top prices were not well supported curing the later hours of the day. Argentine receded about -i •Eiiypuan, after touching 43, chopped to l:r, Hungarian were better, End Russian exhibit,d some firmness. Turkish remain steady, and Freuch and Italian are a shade better. In Dome .Railway Stocks the advance of the niorninj was no- supported throughout the day, but stocks i-ft oti' at a general advance, there being but tew exceptions. Cable shares are st-eaciv, and Anieri- can and Canadian lines remain at about the quotations of last night. Best descriptions realised from 78s to 80s per cwt, and mid- dling and inferior sorts from 60s to 66s per cwt. Mutton was plentiful, and trace remarkably quiet. Best wether changed hands at from 9d to 9jd, and heavy ewes from 8d to 8d per lb. There was a little lamb on offer, but the season is nearly over, and there was scarcely any demand for it. Prices ranged from 9d to 9d per lb. There was an average muster of milch cows, but very little business appeared to be done. There were between 1,700 and 1,800 store cittle on offer, and, with an im- proved trade, nearly all were sold, at about last week's rates. There was a large supply of pigs, the Irish con- signments alone numbering over 1,800. The demand was not particularly large, and to effect a clearance holders gubmitted to a reduction. A MYSTERIOUS CAVERN. The discovery of an enormous grotto at Burgos, in Spain, says the Paris correspondent of the Morning Advertiser, has been followed by the accidental discovery of another in France, whiiJh will be still more interesting to anthropo- logists. As some workmen were engaged in the extraction of Jura limestone from a qnarry close to Belfort, having sprung a mine for the purpose, they remarked a small hole that seemed to belong to some cavity. Having widened this opening with their pickaxes, and then ventured inside with lamps, they found themselves in a vase cavern, the floor of which was about 6ft. lower than the orifice. Their surprise was increased on seeing heaps of human skulls and bones lying about, as if this place had once been a vast charnel-house. No door, no opening whatever but that which they themselves had made in a wall of unbroken rock, could be discovered. The alarm was given, and the engineers and city authorities wereLsgos on the spot. A thorough search was made orl-le following day by competent persons. The cavern is situated at about two miles north-west of Belfort. It was ascertained that its origin was owing to a fault caused by dislocation at the time of post-Jurassic up- heavals, and that it had been partly hollowed out by the waters of the river that flowed in the valley of La Savoui- euse at the period when glaciers were thawing io that locality on the southern declivity of the Vosges. On one side the explorers were struck with a magnificent spectacle, consisting of beautiful column-like stalagmites, not having any stalactites to correspond from the roof they resembled marble mallsoleume arranged on steps in a necropolis. Nor was the latter an undeserved name for on advancing further into the interior the explorers remarked a certain systematic arrangement of loose blocks in the shape of dolmens. In these half-natural, half-artificial cavities whole skulls, thigh and shoulder bones were seen, some of;them half imbedded in the stalagmites. Associated with these were stone im- plements, polished rings and bracelets of the same mate- i- L], and three fine vessels in the shape of urns, with mam- millated handles, and design-; on the outside, all remind- in one of those found by M. Ed. Dnpont in the cavern of Furfoos, Belgium, but entire. The length of space is about 108 feet, the breadth 30. It is expected that more caverns will be discovered in this locality, and the re- searches still continue.
