LONDON, Saturday EVENING. There is no change whatever in the commercial situation. The demand for discount to-day on the London market has been very light, the ruling quotation for choice bills being about 1 per cent. According to a telegram from Berlin, the new gold struck by the Imperial Mint, during the week ending the otninst.amounted to 1,853,140 marks. The business of the Stock Exchange to-day has been very stagnant, the half-holiday character of the day, the absence of many members on their holidays, and the near approach of the fortnightly settlement, which commences on Monday next, all contributing to restrict transactions. In the foreign market the Egyptian 7 per Cents of 1873 were sold down to 46;, but they subsequently rallied, and finished about better than the after hour price. The English Railway Market has been weak, from the absence of buying orders. In the market for English Funds, Consols after changing hands at 96f, left off at n6 to 9GI for m mey, and the account 1. New and Jtteduceii Three per Cents were at 96 to 96f. India 5 per cent Stock was at 106 to 106- do 4 per cent, 1031 to 1041 Bank of England Stock, 252 to 254; and Metropolitan Board of Works, 104 to 104j. In Colonial Government Securities Canada 4 per cents are at 92 to 93; New South Wales 4 per >.«nt3 are to 981 New Zealand Consolidated, 103-j to 104-f; ao 5-30—04 to 95 and Victoria 6 per cent, 118 to 120. In the foreign market the chief movement has been in Egyptian bonds, which-show a slight im- provement. The 1868 and: 1873 bonds rose J whilst the Khedive Loan was marked at- 441 to 451, and the Viceroy Mortgage Loan, 48 to 52. With the exception of a tali in Turkish 1865 of 1-16, the securities of the Ottoman Em- pire are unaltered. Argentines are 1 higher, the 1868 bonds closing at 39 to 40, and the 1867 Bone s, 40 to 41 French Rentes rose i Mexican 3 per Cents, i; and Russian showed a tendency to improve Hungarian 5 per Cents, 1871, were marked 59 to 61; do, 1873, 58 to 60 do, Treasury, 82 to 84 do do, 1874, 79 to 81. At the opening of the market railway securities were about the same as last night. Great Western, however, were the exception, the downward movement in anticipation of an unfavourable dividend continuing, and the closing price showing a fall of H per cent. Lan- cashire and Yorkshire and Chatham Preference receded and Brighton Ordinary and South Eas- tern Deferred ,On the other hand, Sheffield and Metropolitan District dropped 1, Great Nor- thern "A" f, London and North Western and Midland Sheffield Deferred and North Eastern North Brtish and Metropolitan j. American Stocks are steady, but without particular change. In the Government class the 5*20 Bonds of 1867 are about i dollar higher Erie Ordmary Shares were at 12$to 12 £ and the Pre- 9 ference Shares at 19A to 20i. Illinois Central Shares have given way dollar since yesterday, but other-descriptions show,no material change. As an Episcopalian clergyman, they could not he expected to re-gard him with much favour;and the nar- row spirit he ivanifested in relation to their Church did not tend to ahat their prejudices. To the last he retained somewhat of the leaven of his Oxford education he held, for many years, the doctrine of apostolical succession; and lie seemed to think that, as a minister of the Church of Kngland, he was bound to give no countenance whaterer to Dissenters. Though lay preaching was all essential part of his own ecclesiastical machinery, he deemed it his duty to attend the public service of the Established Church- no matter how worthless the officiating clergyman but he could not see his way to join in the worship of the non- conformists, even when conducted by a most worthy and able p-Astor. The Presbyterians marked these inconsistencies alld he sumetimes blamed them for the coldness with which lie was received by them, when he might have discovered II apology in his own exclusiveness. Though the Noncon- formists of Ulster, as a body, had now much declined in piety and zeal, many of them werp still noted for vital godliness; and recent controversies' with Non-Subscribers and Seceders had kept up a spfrit of inquiry; so that, in point of religious knowledge, they stood on a higher level than the rest of the Profcestunt population. Wesley, though an eminent saint, was not a grea.t theologian. His mind was better fitted to explain elenentary truths, and to ar- range practical details, than to solve difficulties and grasp comprehensive principles. Hence his creed was an incon- gruxus medley of Evangelism and Pelagianism. I • LATEST MARKETS. CORN. CABDITF CORN MARKET, Saturday.—Attendance at market to day very small, owing to farmers being: engaged in harvesting their corn. A few new samples ot wheat were offered of very good quality. They were sold at late rates, but the business done was extremely small. Foreign wheat remains without alteration, and feeding stuffs without change in value. The supply of everything was smail. GrLOUCESTEa CORN' MARKET, Saturday.—(From Messrs GrLOUCESTEa CoRz MARKET, Saturday.—(From Messrs W. C. Lucy and Co.'s Price (jurrent.)-At our market to-day there was a fair supply of English wheat, and prices favoured buyers. There were a few samples of new wheat shewn, chiefly white, and of tine quality, Foreism very slow, at a reduction of fully Is per quarter. Grinding barley rather cheaper. Maize unaltered in value, as also oat?. READING CORN MARKET, Saturday.-A small quantity of old wheat was on offer, and as the weather is beauti- fully fine for harvest work, there were only a few farmers present. Several lots of new wheat came to hand, and the quality was unexceptionally good. The average weight was from 63 lbs to 65 lbs per bushel. Old wheat was Is to 2s cheaper, and the new ranged from 48s 6d to 52a per quarter. New oats in fair sale, at 258 to 26s 6d. CATTLE. CARMARTHEN Aconsr FA IR, Saturday.—This fair was held on Saturday, but was not up to the average of past years, as to the amount of business transacted, wholesale buyers not being numerous. Very good animals of the brougham class fetched from C60 to 270, but few were good enough to tempt dealers to go to these figures. Animals of an inferior class were plentiful, but the demand was not great, and they passed off slowly at prices varying from £ 10 to £ 20, the values being fully £ 4 per animal lower than at last fair. Of cart horses there were few on offer, and they were sold slowly at lower rates than obtained six months ago. A great number of two year olds and yearlin?s were on offer. The former realized from A'20 to 230, and the yearlings £15 to £20. There were, too, a good many suckers in the market, which sold very slowly indeed, from £ 10 to B12. being the Dellal prices. Of store cattle a very great number were shown, mostly of the black breed. Buyers were, as a rule, rather shy of bidding, and business was conse- quently slack. Rates rauged from J612 to 4. f r good animals inferior one ranged from JE6 to E10. Fat Fat beasts were very scarce, aud in good demand those sold realised from 6d to 8d per lb. Of sheep and pigs very few were shown. PRODUCE. LONDON PRODUCE MARKET, Saturday.—Sugar market quiet, but late prices are well maintained. Coffee dull, and little doinp. Rice remains inactive. WORCESTER Hop MARKET, Saturday.—(From Piercy, Longbottom, and Faram's Peport.)-The continuance of hot weather, and absence of sufficient rain, has caused the hops to stand still since last week. It is now too late for the weak bine to do any good, but on the few strong- bined and well-cultivated lands there will be a fair show at picking time. Unfortunately, in this district, such grounds are in a great minority, as the greatest portion of the Worcester plantations will be an absolute failure. Our market is quiet, in sympathy with the borough market, where the home reports are of a more favourable character. WOOL. LONDON WOOL SALES, Saturday.—To-day'a catalogue comprised 8,616 bales, consisting chiefly of Cape and Port Phillip wool. Large attendance of buyers for a Saturday, and bidding extremely active at fully previous values. Prices in many instances close higher than in April and May sales. Present series of auctions conclude this evening. Next series expected to com- mence at latter end of October.

At the Sheffield Town Hall, on Saturday morning, Samuel Whitehull Mulloney, trimming manufacturer, of Coventry, said to have filed a petition last week, with over £ 100,000 liabilities, was charged with gorging the names of Lord Elibank and a Sheffield manufacturer to a bill of ex- change for £ 3,000 on July 8 last, and circulating it. He was arrested in London and brought to Sheffield. The case was adjourned for further evidence. Th Bishop of London has addressed a letter to the beneficed clergy of his diocese, in which he draws special attention to the section of the Act of Parliament (37 and 38 Vic., c. 77) respecting the penalty incurred for allowing clergymen ordained by bishops: not being bishops of a diocese in the Church of England or Ireland, to officiate in any church in this country without the consent in writing of the bishop of the diocese in which such church is (ituated. William Hodge, a tailor, who had been secretary to a branch of the Amalgamated Tailors' Trade Union, has been charged at the Marylebone Police-court with mis- applying £ 21 13O. 8d. received on account of the society. In answer to the charge, he said he was very sorry, and would repay the maney if time were Riven. Mr. D'Eyn- court ordered him to pay the JMI l-'is. Sd., a fine of t5, and 20s. costs, or ia default to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for three months. Messrs. Tattersall have received instructions to offer the Middle Park stud for sale on Friday and Saturday, the 22nd and 23rd of September, unless disposed of privately beforehand. Liddell, of the 10th Hussars, on entering the Police-court at Canterbury, removed his cap, and addressing the bench, said that, in the course he had adopted,, he meant no disre- spect. When he first appeared before the magis- trates he entere.t the court under arms, which he con- sidered the most courteous manner in which he, as an officer, could act tpwards the civil authorities: and if, in acting up to.what he believed to be military discipline, he had given offence, be now offered an apology. An accident has happened to George Hasleton Welch- man, 15, a scholar at the Birmingham Free Grammar School, who lived with his parents at Holyhead-place, "Handsworth. The boy had been tothe flower show at the Botanical Garden*, Edgbaston, and on his return went to Monument-lane Station to get a ticket for Birmingham. Whilst be was crossing the line the train due in Birming- ham at 6.05 came into the station and he was struck with great force by the buffers of the engine. He was removed to the Queen's Hospital, but died before reaching there. On Saturday morning, as a lad named Charles Jefferies, aged thirteen years, residing in Gravel-lane, Southwark' was bavhing in the River Thames, off Bankside, he was heard to utter a cry for help, and befoie assistance could be rendered he sank,and was never seen to rise afterwards. The tide running strong, he must have been carried away under the barges lying adjacent. There are nineteen bodies lying in the river Thames, lost between London- bridge and Westminster-bridge, which have not been re covered, in spite of the efforts made by the Thames Police for that purpose. The Board of Trade inquiry into the accident on the Somerset and Dorset Railway at Radstock has been 1opened by Captain Tyler at Bath. The evidence shewed that there was only a single set of rails with a single cabin midway at Foxcote, and that if the regulations were fol- lowed two trains could not pass in opposite directions, The trains to which the accident happened were excur- sion trains very much out of time. Only one of them was in the working time-table. Some evidence was given as to the discretionary powers entrusted to the signalman at Foxcote, and the inquiry was adjourned. According to news, says the Broad A rrow,which has been received from the West Coast of Africa, up to the 5th Julv, Bonny advices ctate that it will be impossible for the traders to get up the Niger without some assistance, owing to the hostile attitude of the natives. This is considered a very serious matter, as about 400 white people, including missionaries, are up there, as well as property to the value of upwards £ 100.000. The Governor was understood to be willing to send a gunboat up the river, as it was thought the sight of one would do good, but it was not known whether Comnuodore Sir. W. K. Hewett would consent. There have been several letters in the 1 imes, says the Examiner, about the homicidal liver Lea, which seems to be more bloodthirsty than Scaruander himself. Some twenty-five years ago it very nearly succeeded in number- ing among its victims a gentleman who is now the first of living English psychologists. He dived into one of its deep pools, and found himself suspe-^ed in an inexplicable way between the surface and the bottom, unable to move cither up or down. Fortunately he was able to raise his fingers above water, and a companloll came to the rescue, but it was a most determined attempt at murder on the part of this incorrigible homicide. The chairman and five other guardians of Keighley, who were committed for contempt of the Court of Queen's Bench in refusing to carry out the Vaccination Act, arrived in Leeds on Saturday forenoon. They were met there by the sheriff's officers, to whom on the previous day they had given their word of honour that they would sur- render at Leeds. At the Queen's Hotel they held a small levée, and a large crowd assembled at the North Eastern station to witness their departure for York Castle.
