CARDIFF. THE FIRE AT THE EAST DOCK. —The name of the vessel in which the fire took place late on Monday night, is the Margaret Pngh. We hear that. the fire was got under before any serious damage was done. SCHOLASTIC —Among the names of those who have recently succeeded in passing the Preliminary Exami- nation of the Pharmaceutical Society," we find that of Master W. John, son of Mr. John, of Pentre Ystrad. Master John is one of the pupils of the Cardiff Grammar School, of which the Rev. T. Lewis, B.A., is Master. FATAL RESULTS Fitom TAKING LAUDANCM. Yester day morning at about 5 o'clock, Edward Rivell, the second mate of the ship Primel Region, died from the -effects of having taken a quantity of laudanum the diy previous, on board his vessel, which lay in the Penarth Roads. He was conveyed to the Hamadryad Hospital Ship, where he died. An inquest will be held. AN INTOXICATED WOMAN.— At the Borough police court yesterday, before the Mayor and Alderman Alex- ander, Ellen Coughland was charged with being drunk and disorderly in Bute-street. P.O. Rees proved the charge, and the prisoner, who had previously been con- victed, and only left gaol on Saturday, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labour. SERIOUS ASSAULT.—Two men named William John, and William Bacrell, were charged with assaulting a man of colour, named Henry Thomas, who stated that he was beaten on Monday night by two men. He recognised the prisoner John, but could not identify the other man. He did not know at what.time the assault occurred, as be was .half drunk. A girl named Thomas, who was with the 4complainant, said she saw three militiamen assault the complainant and kick him while he was on the ground. P.C. 14 gave evidence for the prosecution. The prisoner John was sentenced to be imprisoned for two months, and Barwell for one month, with hard labour. BUTE-STREET CHARACTERS.—Edward Scott and John Phillips were charged with being drunk and disorderly in Bute-street. Fined 20s. and costs, or in default 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour. ROBBERY IN A BROTHEL.—A man named Walter Garrett was charged with robbing Thomas Hughes, of 22 10. The prosecutor said he was by trade a ships' carpenter, and resided at 32, Crighton-street, On Monday after- noon he went to a brothel in Charlotte-street, when the prisoner, who was a stranger to him, put his hand into his pocket, and he missed his money afterwards. It appeared the prisoner met the prosecutor at the Clarence Hotel, and then took him to the brothel. The evidence given in the case revealed a deplorable state of immorality. P.C. 47 arrested the prisoner. There being considerable doubt in the case, the prisoner was discharged. PEACE SURETT.—James Wiltshire was bound over in the sum ofi5, to keep the peace towards Jane Roberts, for six months. In cross examination, it was elicited that the complainant had been confined in a lunatic asylum, and had made a charge of assault, which was dismissed against Dr. Lougher, at the Llandaff Police Court. THEFT BY A MILITIAMAN.—William Prichard was charged with stealing a shirt, the property of a person named Mansfield. The prisoner was a militiaman, and the robbery was stated to have been committed at the Royal Oak. Detective Sergeant Newman found the shirt pledged at Mr. Phillips's pawnbroking shop. A lad named Tobin, assistant to the pawnbroker, said the pri- soner pledged the shirt for three shillings. About ten minutes afterwards he returned and wished to take it out of pawn. Detective Newman apprehended the prisoner in the act of taking the shirt out of pawn. Prisoner pleaded guilty, and had nothing to say in extenuation of the offence. He was committed to gaol for two months with hard labour.
NEWPORT.
NEWPORT. DRUNK AND DISORDERLY.—At the Borough Petty Sessions, on Monday, before the Mayor and Mr. William Evans, Mary Collins was charged with being drunk and disordei ly on the Canal-side, as reported by P.C. Gadd, who heard defendant making use of abominable language. Fined 10s. 6d. COAL STEALING BY Boys.-Michael Reardon, John Miles, Patrick Neal, and Henry Brown, four little boys, were severally charged with stealing coal, the property of the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company. P.C. Smith stated the case. He saw the prisoners Miles and Rear- don throwing coal off a truek. The other two were watching. About 5 cwt. of coal had been thrown off. On catching the prisoners and asking what they were going to do with the coal, they said they were going to sell it. P.C. Coates gave confirmatory evidence. The Bench sentenced Miles and Reardon, the two biggest boys, to one day's imprisonment, and to receive ten strokes with a birch rod the other boys were sentenced to one day's imprisonment, and five strokes with a birch rod. THE ASSAULT ON A BAILIFF.—James James, who was convicted on Wednesday by the magistrates for an assault on James Richard Carr, a sub-bailiff, who had gone to the defendant's house to make a levy for the sum of 215, on behalf of Mr. Daniel Ludlow, the landlord, made application for a re-hearing of the case. The point of the application was that the magistrates had arranged to hear the charge on Friday instead of Wednesday, and this accounted for his non-attendance. The Bench con- ceded to the application. The evidence given by com- plainant was read over, and his statement was confirmed by the evidence of a witness named Warren. Defendant denied any assault whatever, and this denial was sup- ported by the evidence of George James, brother of defendant, and a girl named Jones. State ments were made with a view of showing that the property in the occupation of defendant was in dispute, and had already formed the basis of County. Court proceedings. Defendants asserted that Ludlow had no right to any rent, and actually owed him 280. He said he himself was the owner of the property. He had got hold of it and should stick to it. Mr. Kessick Possession is nine points of the law. Defendant: Of course 'tis. I was born and bred in Newport, and know more than a great many of them know. The Bench ob- served that on the previous hearing they were not aware of their being any dispute in respect to property. If complainant chose, they would grant an adjournment. Carr said he had wasted time enough already. The case was therefore dismissed. A CAUTION TO MEcHANicq. -David Jones, Thomas Grimaldi, and John Reed were severally charged with absenting themselves from the employment of the Usk- side Company without having given proper notice. Mr. Thomas Colborne, solicitor, appeared for the Company, and stated that his clients did not press for vindictive damages. Mr. Huzzey, one of the partners in the firm, stated the nature of the work in which defendants were engaged. On Tuesday last he found they had absented themselves from their work, and on searching for the de- fendants he found Jones and I! eed working on board a steam boat in the dock. On asking why they were not at work on the boilers, the men replied, We have no holder up, by which they meant that Grimaldi was not at the works. That was not any excuse for their not working. If any complaint to this effect had been made, a holder up would have been provided at once. The new rules which had been hung up in the works since the 25th June were produced, and showed that masters and men were subject to a week's notice. Defendants stated that the notice referred to did not apply to boiler-makers, who were exempted by another notice which was fixed up in the yard. The fact was they never made any agreement at all. John Sherrin, a smith, stated that he employed the defendants to do re- pairs to a steamer in the dock. He was not aware that defendants were in the employ of the Usk-side Company. He paid them at the rate of 6s. per day, and a day and three quarters for a night. The real point of the griev- ance appeared to be that the defendants were obtaining and executing work for other parties, and thus interfering with the trade of the complainants. Mr. Colborne said he did not wish for a heavy penalty, but simply wished such a penalty as would operate as a warning to the men in the works generally. Grimaldi was dismissed The other men were fined 10s. each, and cautioned as to the tmsequences of breaking an agreement.

The Mayor thought it was highly desirable for the benefit of the town generally that the Corporation should get the Neath Water Works into their own hands if possible, and a committee was ap- pointed to endeavour to negociate with the Water Com- pany for the sale of their undertaking to the Corporation. The resolution being moved by Mr. May and seconded by Mr. Charles. Several nuisances were reported by the 'inspector, and he was directed to take the necessary steps to have the nuisance abated. t

FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT.—At the Borough Police Court, held at the Guildhall yesterday, the Stipen- diary on the Bench, Margaret Jones and Margaret Rogers, two of the Regent-street beauties, were brought up charged with being drunk, and guilty of disorderly conduct in Back-street, on Monday night. The complainant deposed that on the 21st of June he and others were drinking at the Plough and Harrow, Gelligaer, when defendant and another began to quarrel. The Bench came to the deci- sion that the assault was proved, and fined the defendant 20s. and costs, or 14 days. A QUARRELSOME NEIGHBOUR. MOUNTAIN ASH.
MOUNTAIN ASH. LOCAL BOARD.—The fortnightly meeting of this Board was held at the Board Room, on Monday, the members present being—Messrs. G. Wilkinson (in the chair), J. Grey, T. Edwards, E. Thomas, James Edwards, D. Wil- liams, and E. Evans. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The contract for the scavenging and team work accepted last meeting, was laid before the Board for the necessary signing of the same. Mr. Griffiths hoped that the contract would be carried out more effectually the ensuing year. Tenders for carbolic acid were received from Messrs. Noodle Brethers, Lon- don and Manchester, and it was agreed that a quantity be ordered. A discussion relative to the appoint- ment of a superintendent medical officer, according to the scheme of Mr. Doyle, in which all the Board took part, was of a desultory character, and resulted in appointing Messrs. T. Edwards, Rev. J. W. Williams, and E. Thomas, to attend the meeting at Merthyr this day. The application for the re-opening of the old parish road, made by Messrs. Glasbrook, at the last meeting, was ordered to stand over till the return of Mr. Nixon from Scotland. A letter from the latter gentlemen was read by the Clerk. Seven cases of small-pox were reported at Miskin since last Board, one fatal, but mostly of a very mild character this fortnight. The Surveyor's report showed there were several cases of nuisances previously reported, in which notices were given but the work not carried out, namely, at Ffowd-crescent, Margrave street, Darran-road, Cara- dog-road, Ivor-street, Cardiff-road, and Knight-street. The Board adopted the report, and ordered the Clerk to infonrf all owners of property complained of, that they will be compelled to appear by summons unless the same be removed forthwith. Great complaints were made of the way the scavenger was carrying out his contract, and the Board re&olved to inflict the penalty. Orders were given to report every case of nuisance in the public streets. The Medical Officer's report was read, which showed the total deaths in the district to be 43; in the corresponding quarter last year there were 62; total number of births, 84 corresponding quarter, 65. It was also reported that small-pox bad made its re-appearance during the last three weeks in one portion only of the dis- trict, and was on the decrease. The Finance Committee reported 1;247 8s. 7d. in the bank. All bills produced were ordered to be paid, and cheques for the several amounts were accordingly signed.

RUDRY.
RUDRY. THE PHILANTHROPIC INSTITUTION.— Saturday was quite a gala day at Rudry, it being the anniversary day of the Bryn Golaith Lodge Philanthropic Institution, held at the Griffin Inn. At 11 o'clock the members, to the number of GO or upwards, headed by the Gelligaer brass band, marched through Pentre Sarn on to the beau- tiful little village of B edwas, where they were welcomed by their brethren of the Hugh Montgomery Lodge, who were celebrating their anniversary on the same day. After refreshing themselves they wended their way to the City of Jackdaws," Caerphilly, or as it was called by our ancestors, Senghenydd." Here again a hearty re- ception was given them by the Caerphilly Castle Lodge, held at the Parrot Inn, who entertained the members with a good supply of cwrw da." The procession was then reformed and returned through the rich and beauti- ful vale of Wernddu. After reaching the lodge room the members dined together, the dinner being well served by Mr. and Mrs- Lewis. The evening was spent in the utmost conviviality.
LLANTWIT MAJOR.
LLANTWIT MAJOR. PASTORAL AID SOCIETY.—On Sunday last a service of unusual interest took place in the parish church. The sermon, which was preached by the Uev. S. Jones, of Marcros, to a numerous and respectable congregation, who listened throughout with marked attention, was in aid of the subscriptions to the funds of the above institu- tion. The rev. gentleman took his text from the Lord's Prayer-" Tby kingdom come." The collection was liberal. The Rev. E. Vaughan, vicar, read prayers.
ABERDARE,
ABERDARE, FURIOUS DRIVING.—At the Police-court, yesterday, be- fore Messrs. R. de Rutzen, R. H. Rhys, and J. Lewis, John Evans was charged with furiously driving a horse and trap in Cardiff-road. Aberaman, thereby endanger- ing the lives of her Majesty's subjects. From the evi- dence of P.S. Cook it appeared that on the 22nd inst, at about half-past nine o'clock, the defendant was driving along the road at full gallop, and kept on whipping the horse. Upon being called upon, he pulled up for about a hundred yards, and then started off again. The street was literally thronged at the time with people, who had been to meet the choir. Defendant applied for a remand for the purpose of procuring witnesses, and the Bench, considering it to be a serious case, allowed the case to stand over, at the same time giving notice that all per- sons summoned to appear before the Court, must bring their witnesses on the day the summons is made re- turnable. PERMITTING DRUNKENNESS. —John Evans, landlord of the Pelican Inn, Commercial-street, was summoned for permitting drunkenness on his premises. From the evi- dence of P.C. James it appeared that at 10 p m., on the 19th instant, the officer's attention was directed to a crowd outside the house, which he found to be caused by a fight in the passage. He turned the men who were fighting out, and entered the house, where, in the back room, he found 13 men and 2 women, two of the former being very drunk and asleep, one with beer and the other gin before him. The wife of the former said the beer belonged to her husband, and that he had just paid for it. The landlord, who it seems was upstairs in a clubroom, was called, and upon the men being pointed out to him he said he knew nothing about them and the servant girl must have supplied them, if they had anything. This was corroborated by another police-officer, who had accom- panied James on the occasion. Gwenllian Lloyd, a servant in the house, was called, and stated that the man, accompanied by his wife, came into the house drunk and called for beer and gin, the woman asking if they could not be accommodated with a night's lodging. Seeing that the man was drunk, witness refused to serve them, and told them to go out, which they refused to do, and she at once went up to the club-room to call her master to turn them out. On her way down stairs she met the two police officers. Another servant had seen the two drunken men come into the house, and had not served them with any drink. John Evans, who was drinking in the room on the night in question, saw the two drunken men come into the room and heard them call for drink, which was refused. He was sure no one supplied them with any drink before the constables came in. The sum- mons was dismissed. A STRANGE CASE.—Robert Richards, under-manager at the Blaengawr Colliery, was summoned for being drunk on the 20th inst. Mr. Simons appeared for the prosecution and Mr. G. C. James for the defence. The case was rather a peculiar one as no constable appeared, but an engine driver named Powell, and another mtm gave evidence in support of the summons, from which it appeared that the parties were all lining tocether, and on the day in question de- fendant had conducted himself in a disgraceful manner, making use of bad language, &c. For the defence it was urged that the case had been brought solely out of spite against the defendant who, during the strike of 1871, had acted as superintendent to some English colliers who had been sent for, since which time he had been continually subject-d to annoyance called turncoat, &e. The sum- mons was dismissed.
------MAESTEG.
MAESTEG. • ADJOURNED INQUEST.—Yesterday an adjourned inquest was held on the body of Mr. William Rees, fireman. No. 9 level. The deceased died on the 22nd inst. from injuries received on the 15th, by an explosion of gas, which he himself caused having entered the level with a naked light. Dr. Davies gave evidence to the effect that death was caused by inflammation of the brain and lungs, and he was of opinion that deceased would have survived the injuries had the doctor's instructions been attended to, as the injuries were very slight. Mr. Hall, who watched the proceedings on behalf of Mr. Wales, Government In- spector, recommended the company to require all firemen to use the locked safety lamps in future. Mr. Brown, on behalf of the company, promised to attend to )1r. Hall's recommendation. The jury returned a verdict of Acci- dental death."
IPEMBROKE DOCK.
PEMBROKE DOCK. A COLLISION.—Our quiet town was thrown into a state of excitement on Monday evening byan occurrence which very rarely if ever has happened here before. It appears that the agents of two large circuses, Messrs. Hutchinson and Tayleures, and Messrs. Powell and Clarkes had made arrangements to visit this town, and by some unforseen circumstance they met on Monday, the former took time by the forelock, and not only engaged the services of the leading bill poster, but also secured all the public stations and as many private ones as possible. The latter were driven to put their bills wherever a spare place could be obtained. It is almost needless to say that the agents showed no special love for each other. However, as the nature of the performances of the two circuses materially differ, they will each probably meet with a good share of patronage.
MONEY MARKET.—TUESDAY.
MONEY MARKET.—TUESDAY. The settlement of another very light account com- mences to-day, and there is very little movement in prices. Spanish Stock is i better, Eries are J lower, and Home Railway Stocks are tolerably firm. Anglo- American Telegraph Stock is 1- lower. A comparison of the prices of the leading stocks with the quotations of a fortnight ago shows some improve- ment in the home descriptions, especially in the Eng- lish Railway Stocks, where, with the exception of Great Eastern and Great Western, the rise has ranged between I and 2& per cent., with which the downward course of the iron and coal trade has had much to do, aided by cheapening mouey. Foreign Stocks generally have been in discredit, and the value of the leading speculative descriptions has suffered with the excep- tion of French, Turkish, and Russian. In the higher classed securities Bank Stock during the same period has risen 2 and Consols i to i, but otherwise prices are the same.
