THE CITY OF THE JUST.
THE CITY OF THE JUST. 11 By THOMAS TERRELL, K.C., OF THE SOUTH WALES CIRCUIT (JOINT AUTHOR OF LADY DELMAB "). CHAPTER XIII-Continued. The Accusation. He turned uneasily, and as he did 80 his eyes fell upon the crucifix which hung over the mantel-ehelf. He raised himself on his elbow to see it well, and he read some lines which he himself had placed upon the wall: "Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to Him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife hath made herself ready." He was suddenly roused; he stood straight up. "His wife ha.th made herself ready," he repeated. Temptation had come upon him to abandon his great work-the Church-His bride—which he was charged to purify from heresy. Should he turn back now, like a deserting soldier on the field of battle? No, no! Away, vain regrets; away, the past; away, the love of wife, of home, of children. One thing, one thing only—the bride of the Lamb, pure and radiant, and "arrayed in fine linen, clean and wlUte; for "Blessed are they which are called onto the marriage supper of the Lamb." Thus he wandered-at moments tempted away by his own humanity, then casting that aside in an ecstasy of devotion, grew confused between the means and the end, prostrated himself before chaotic and meaningless phrase, which to him justified and rendered himself before chaotic and meaningless phrase, which to him justified and rendered If necessary an obstinate persistence in the course which he had marked out. The parish of Pen-ewm-garw had been com- mitted to his charge. He was very little con- cerned in what took place outside the bosom of the Church—"His Bride"-but within it heresy must be rooted out. The war must ibe waged; so that when at the end of time the Elect were numbered, he should be amongst them called to the marriage feast. That was the great object which he must keep in view, and for the accomplishment of that object no sacrifice should be too great. He himself must be numbered amongst the Elect, and must stand a hero before man and before God. Vanity and selfishness bound together hand and foot, struggling for supremacy, con- cealed from his own view by a. tMn veil of hypocrisy, which he labelled in his own mind and to his own complete satisfaction by ihe name of "Duty." So the softened heart g-rew hard again, the nueteadied pulse grew calm, the eyes, which at one moment had been dimmed, grew bright and hard, and the spirit of the old-time love passed away with the waves of years that were gone and had disappeared with many others over the horizon. The rector struck a. light. The sermon for next Sunday must be prepared; it must ring defiance loud and sharp. He opened his desk, reached down two or three books from the shelves round, prepared his pen. his ink, and his paper, and set to work. For some moments he oast about for a text. Two or three occurred to him, but they were set aside as not sufficiently in sympathy with the fieroe mood in which he was. He wanted something that sounded of war, war to the death. The deputation the other day had sought to turn him aside. He would show them that so far from bending, he stood more erect than ever. Something had been said of the* processions. He would justify them; aye, processions with the Gross, with incense, and with banners- He would claim the undeniable right of "His Bride" to appear in gorgeous array. "Thou hast given a. banner to thenn that fear Thee, that it may be displayecij, because of the truth, that Thy beloved ma.y be delivered." He copied the verse down slowly. He was wrapped in his task; he was thinking deeply. As he wrote the last word, he felt a hand upon his shoulder. He had heard no one come in. He was startled. He looked up. "Wlinifred!" "Father!" then she knelt down by his side and took his hand in her two and kissed it. "Yon disturb me. You see I am. at work." "Father, I want to speak to you;" but she did not go on; she only kissed his hand again. He said nothing for a moment. It was not diifficult to guess why she was there, and he hesitated how he should deal with the matter. She, too, was silent. It was for her to begin, and she could say nothing. "Well, my child, you are sorry?" She did not answer him; there was another silence. "Father, I-I hate Mr. Win staple." "Tha.t is very wrong of you. Why should you hate him? He has done you, and me through you, an honour. Moreover, he is my friend. Too. have no right to hate him." The rector withdrew his hand, leaned back in his chair, and looked firm. "I can'¡j¡ many him; I caat. Father, I don't want to see him again." "You cannot know anything about it. You are Quite a child. Believe me, I, your father, know better what is for your happiness thmm you can. do." "I know I can never love him. Oh! it is quite impossible. Besides—besides She stopped, hesitated, and buried her face in her hands upon his knee. "Besides what?" asked the rector. "I love someone else." "What do you know of love? It is nothing but a silly fancy," he responded. "And, pray, who may be the lucky swain who has stolen the romantic heart of Miss Winifred Stepney, aged eighteen?" She did not reply. The satire in the rector's tones froze her. "Well? I wait to hear." "Stephen Eccles." "I thought as much. An insolent adven- turer, without a spark of honour." The colour came into Winifred's faoe sud- denly, then died away. "No, no; don't say that. father. It is not true. It is unjust of you. "I shall say what I please, miss, and what my duty tells me I ought to say. A man of nice honesty, this Stephen Eccles, whom you say you love! A man who sneaks around and fascinate's a mere child's fancy, and then tries to rouse her to disobedience, and even insolence, to her father; a man without a penny to bless himself with! If I were only a younger man I would punish his audacity in the way he deserves to be punished." And the rector indicated by a gesture the cor- poral punishment he would inflict upon the man who dared to thwart him. "Stephen has never urged me to disooey you, father-never, and he is doing very well; everyone says he is." "Don't call the man Stephen, indeed! Yon have lost all maidenly modesty. I am sur- prised at you." "I am engaged to him." Winifred was gain- ing courage; there was a; alight tinge of defiance in her voice. "Engaged! Great Heavens!" cried the rector, with his hands in the air. "Yon sorely tempt me to forget myself. And pray, miss, with whose consent are yon engaged to this village apothecary?" "With Bob's." "Bob's! I suppose your father is dead, and counts for nothing?" 1 "No, no. Oh, father, yon do not ttnaer- stand." "I oertainlj do not. The world has ctumgea r very much since I was a young man. if girls of eighteen can engage themselves in this manner. When I proposed to your poor mother, I first requested permission of the Bishop, your grandfather; and when he accepted me for a son-in-law. your mother. like a dutiful daughter, took the advice and recommendation of her father, and she was happy. But now, it seems, all is changed." "You liked Stephen Eccles once, father. It is only since Mr. Winstaple came that you turned against him." "Do you think I ever contemplated the man as a son-in-law?" The rector spoke with in- finite contempt. "I wish Mr. Winstaple had never come here." Winifred was sobbing. "You do not know anything at all about him. A very different sort of man from this Dr. Eccles, I can tell you; a man of the world, of judgment, of wealth, and. above all, a man with the most refined sense of honour. There isn't a girl in the county but would consider herself blessed. indeed, to have the opportunity which you have, and which you do not even appreciate." "Father, let us say no more about him." She tendered for a compromise. "Yon are mad. Do you think the offer which he makes will be open for ever for your accep- tance?" "I do not want him. I cannot love him; I cannot marry him," she replied, in disjointed sentences. "Father, let me stay with you—I am very young yet-with you and Bob, and let us be happy, as we were before." "I have my duty to perform. Did I shrink from it you would, when the day of trouble came, be the first to reproach me." "Never, father, never!" and she put her arms round -his neck and pressed her tear- stained cheek against his. The rector had determined to set his foot down firmly, but he could not steel bis heart to it somehow or other; the pleading eyes, the tears, the tight-pressed arms were too much. "-Now, now, now," he said. disengaging him- self, "get along; think of what I have said to you. I am busy at present. I must prepare my sermon. You should not interrupt me when I am writing." She felt that in some manner she had an advantage; there was a certain modulation of tone in his voice which sounded like post- ponement, time gained. She could hope for nothing but time just now. She kissed him. "You are not angry, father?" "Angry—no—I am grieved, that's all." And with tffat the rector dipped his pen in the ink and turned resolutely to his task. There was nothing more to say, and Wini- fred left the room tfc hurry to Bob. The rector went back to the text which he had chosen and tried to collect his thoughts. Yes, he remembered what he had wanted to say, and he wrote a few lines, then he found him- self thinking; he was discnssing.)If"instaple instead of his sermon. The Silver Streak Gold Mine, the wealth to which the broker had given him the key. the advantages of Lon- don, and the prestige of a metroopiitan pul- pit. He would come out victorious from tha. ecclesiastical proceedings which h,,e Vv-en. brought against him. The fight against* Puri- tanism had never been fought as he was in a position to fight it now, with money at his back, really money without limit. Winstaple had seen the justice of his cause and had promised to stand by him, and he entertained no doubt but that the broker would faithfully perform the promise which he had made; and then when he came to London, with laurels on his head, he would be received withr open arms, no doubt. Preferment would follow, and he would be placed in a position to show to the world the sort of man he was, and to anse regret that so much talent and energy should have been forced for so many years to remain dormant in Pen-cwm-garw ia Wales. Winstaple had behaved well. The five hun- dred pounds, which he had advanced had greased the wheels of litigation, to such effect that the promoters of the suit were looking with anxious faces, and the rumours in the district had it that the Rev. Timothy Swiggles was inwardly raging with envy at the progress which the rector had made. It was absurd to think of Winifred being such a fool as to refuse the offer which had been made to her. What more could the girl want? Love! The rector flattered him- self that as a man of the world he had long since gauged the real value of that transient emotion. Love! a. mere phantasy which settled upon ill-regulated brains; what insanity to permit such a shadow to stand and bar the way to solid, material advantages! The girl was obsti- nate; it was his duty to bend her as the gar- dener bends a crooked twig into the straight line. She had said that Bob countenanced the proposal of Eccles. Bob! what right had she to interfere? There it was. There was the mischief. Bob was the real revolutionist. And as this impressed itself upon him, his eyebrows contracted, and he actually thumped his fist upon the table. He rose and rang the bell, and directed tha servant to inform Miss Bob that he wished to see her in the study immediately. Bob had, in the earlier days of her existence. always held her father before her as tha model of everything that was great and nobl& upon the world. She had confused profes- sion with practice. The rector had never- been too modestly impressed with his own qualifications. She had taken him, as all children do their parents, at the price which he placed upon himself. He spoke charity; she believed him charitable. He preached self-denial, and she crowned him with the martyr's crown. Long suffering, and she mar- velled at his Christian patience. He compared himself with the magnates of the Church who had by a corrupt system been placed over him, and she measured him an intellec- tual giant. But time had shaken this faith; experience had sown distrust; every now and then the man had removed the mask for a second, per- chance when he little guessed that sharp eyea were peering beneath, and she had seen the real features. She had certainly pushed doubt away from her; refused to look £ S* which was obviously before her, until it c £ £ to the time when, with her own evi>R she had seen and heard of the unh^ T' gain-a bargain which to her LSL ar" she was, roused every fetOinn-' f Hatred.
