COLLISION OFF THE NASH.
COLLISION OFF THE NASH. A Case in the Appeal Court. In the Court of Appeal Tuesday the Master of the Rolls and Lords Justices Mathewfand Cozens- Hardy had before them an appeal by the owners of the Cardiff tags Nora and Clarissa against a decision of Sir Francis Jenne, the late president of the Admiralty Division, holding them respon. sible for a collision between the sailing ship Har- vest Home, of Preston, and the Bristol pilot cutter Emily, as the result of which the Emily sank. The casualty occurred in the Bristol Chan- nel near the Nash light on March 14th, 1904. At the time the tugs were towing the London sailing | fhip Moy, the pilot cutter being lashed along. side the Moy. The Harvest Homs was on h voyage from Londonderry to Cardiff, and her owners counterclaimed for damages. Sir Francis Toune found that the Harvest Home was not to blame, but that the collision was dae to the tugs not keeping oat of the way of the vessel. He therefore held that the Emily was entitled to maintain an action against the tngs, but not to maintain an action against the Harvest Home. and that the Harvest Home was entitled to main- tain an action against the tugs, but not against the Emily. Tha owners of the tugs now appealed. They did not question the judgment so far as the Har- vest Home was concerned, but they submitted that the pilot cutter Was guilty of contributory negligence in doing nothing to avoid the colli- sion. Their Lcrclahips affirmed the finding of the Coart below that the tugs were in fault, bat held that the Emily shonidalsD have been pronoan«ed to blame for not slipping the rope by which she was made fast to the buoy when the danger of collision became apparent. Each party to the appeal were ordered to pay their own costs.

Don't come out hare except for health, and do not invest money in this country. Gold mines do not glitter, only glint in directors' meetings. Diamond mining is aiioat to undergo a. great change for the worse, for supply will shortly be in exoess of demand, if reported iinds are time. Politics are causing merchants grave uneasiness. Meetings of various Chambers of Commerce show this, and they are the most reliable index of a nation's misfor- tunes, more so tbaa the Stock Exchange, where wires are palled."

KING AND ARMY REFORM. Attention having been called to a statement that the King has been detained in London in connection with a scheme of proposed Army re- form, aud that a meeting on the subject was held at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, the Frees Association is authorised to say that the King bad not intended leaving London, and that there is no foundation for the assertion that the question of Army reform his detained him. As to the meeling on Tuesday, there was a private gathering at Buckingham Palace, at which Lord Esher, Lord Knutsford, and Lord Roths- child were among those present. The meeting had nothing to do with Army reform, as the pretence of LDrd Knatsford and Lord Roths- I child might indicate. The object of the meeting ia understood to have been purely philanthropic.
