I CHURCH BAZAAR AT CARDIFF.
I CHURCH BAZAAR AT CARDIFF. Green, which is symbolical of hope, predomj- I nates in a pretty scheme of colour at the threa ^clays' bazaar opened at Cardiff Town Hall on Tuesday in aid of the debt on St. German's Cbnrcb day schools, Roath. The stalls are laden with a multitudinous variety of useful and fancy articles which only the deft aDd willing bands of the fair sex could bring together. The bazaar was opened by Mr P. H. Coward, who referred with satisfaction to the work accomplished by the Church schools in Metal-street, Roath. In 1 moving a vote of thanks to Mr toward, Mr George David (Official Receiver) said that money was needed not only to wipe off the exist- ing debt. but to continue the work of the schools, although the time might coate sooner than some expected when the local authorities would find it their duty to obey the laws of the land and ad- minister the Education Act. But even after that happy time money would be needed to carry on the schools. Councillor W. H. Renwicic, in seconding, declared he was not so sanguine as Mr David, but he hoped that, for the benefit of all, those a.t present opposed to the Education Act would remove tvair opposition. If, as was stated, the Act was to be amended it would be: with the object of doing away with religions in- struction. They should do their utmost to pre- vent any such amendment. If religious instruc- tion was not imparted in the day schools a great many children in Cardiff would not receive any at all. (Hear, hear.) Amongst those present wete the Revs. Robert J. Ives (vicar), n" H. Wbitford, and A. G, Dix, Mr J. 0. Kirk, Mr and Mr Dyer-Lewis, Mr and Mrs J. A. Jones, Dr. and Mrs Walford, Mrs Sheen. Mrs Sankey, Mr J. W. N. Bonner, and Mr D. J. Stephans. Tbe stall-holders included Mrs George David, Mrs F. J. Veall, Miss Gunn, Miss L. Catr, Mrs J. Dyer Lewis, Mrs D. J. Stephens, Mrs Fred Evans, Mrs A. C. Kirk, Miss Moody, Miss Newton, Miss Price, Miss Hall, Mrs A. Sheen, MrB Campbell, Miss Smith. Sister Nesta, Mrs Moody, &c. The bazaar will be opened this (Wednesday) afternoon by Mrs Jenner, Wenvoe Castle. There are numerous aide attractions.
,....-,-::.:J-:.._....--MURDER…
,J- MURDER MYSTERY. Strange Evidence at a Trial. At Worcester Assizes on Tuesday George Fisher was charged with the murder of Mary Swinford, a hop picker, at Kidderminster, on the night of CctoberSrd. Accused was first charged with the mnrder while detained for vagrancy at Lincoln, when he was detected attempting to conceal a leaf torn from his pocket-book, on which was written, Murdered Mary Swinford on Saturday even- ing, the first in October, at Kidderminster, Worcester. God help me. Murder will ont." Prisoner subsequently set np an alibi, and evi- dence was now given by Mr Yicary, a corn mer- chant, and others, to the effect that prisoner, in the name of Burgess, worked for Mr Vicary, at Sooth Molton, Devonshire, from September to October 17tb. Some of the witnesses recognised the handwriting in the pocket-book as Burgess's. Prisoner gave evidence, stating he was at South Molton as stated, and was not in Worces- tershire. He knew Kidderminster, but he could not tell why he wrote tbe entry in the pocket book. The bnife with which the murder was supposed to have been committed was his. He I lost it at Ledburv some time before. The jury, by direction of Mr Justice Ridley, acquitted prisoner, his Lordship remarking that in face of the evidence it was unsafe to find him guilty, although some of the circumstances were beyond bis understanding.
-----NEWPORT RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION.
NEWPORT RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION. Criticised by Councillor Brown. Newport County Council on Tuesday sanctioned the construction of the Stow-hill section of the I electric tramways by direct labour. The Council approved the purchase of ten electric cars, four of which are required for the present service, and six for tbe Stow-hill section, and the pur- chase of a motor-waggon. Councillor W. H. Brown pointed out that the result of the adoption of the penny fares had resulted in an increase of revenue. The takings for the last two weeks under the old system were JE421 lls 9d, and £4114s 8d, the passengers carried beine 93,877 and 90.885, whilst for the two weeks during which the penny fare had been in operation the takings were £ 431 7s 3d, and £ 440 5s lid, and the number of 7s 3d, and JE440 5s lid, and the number of passengers carried was 102,000. and 104,325. j The action of the Ratepayers' Association in writ- ing to the Board of Trade to oppose the granting of a certificate for the laying (1own of the single lineon Stow-hill was against the best intarests of the ratepayers. If the action of the association at the recent Local Government inquiry had succeeded the result would have been that an extra rate of 5s in the £ would have to be levied upon the ratepayers to meet the amount for which sanction to borrow was asked, because the money had already been expended. It was diffi- cult to understand the action of the association, foi it had opposed the laying down of a double line of tramways on Stow-hill, and was now opposing the single line on the ground that the Corporation had not Parliamentary powers to carry oat such a scheme.

The Newport Board of Guardians Special Committee reported to the board on Saturday that the xules required amendment, and re- commended reductions all round. Mr W. R. Brown submitted figures showing that the re- lief granted was decreasing, and the Rev. T. James, Tydu, referring to a circular issued by the Newport Ratepayers' Association on the subject, said it was a piece of impudence wedded to ignorance. This association seemed to be anxious to rule the whole wocld and the Em- } pire." (Laughter.) The report waa adopted, with various amendments.
