John Vaughan was the last survivor of the characters depicted from life in the books. Now they are all gone excepting Jenkin, the smith's son, who. played an unimportant part in the 6tory. The scene of "Echoes from the Welsh Hills" was laid cit Rhydygaeau, Carmarthenshire, whence the late Mr. Davies removed* to Tre- forest many years ago. Much sympathy is felt with the Rev. NONCONFORMIST OBJECTION CONSECRATION OF, PENYRHEOL CEMETERY. I At the Caerphilly District Council on Tues- day evening, Mr. R. T. Rees presiding, a depu- tation of six members of the Free Church Council was received to state their objections to the consecration of a portion of the Penyrheol Cemetery. At the last meeting of the council it was decided that if the Non- conformist ratepayers desired an inquiry to be held the expenses should fall upon the Free Churches. The deputation appeared to protest against this, and the Rev. Hayden Morgan, of Abertridwr, stated that, as the preponderating number of the inhabitants of the locality were Nonconformists, they could not compromise on this question, and urged that the council should abiue by their previous decision, arrived at months ago, against consecration. The only answer the council could give the deputation was that the whole of the correspondence which had passed between the council and the Home Office, the latter suggesting an inquiry, was open to their perusal.

GREAT ACTOR'S VISIT TO CARDIFF. SIR JOHN HARE AT NEW THEATRE NEXT WEEK. Next Monday night, when Sir John Hare inaugurates his first and last visit to Cardiff at the New Theatre, he will be seen for the only time in his original characters in both "A Pair of Spectacles and "A Quiet Rubber," two of the most famous examples of his wonderful versatility (one might almost eay three, for his characterisation of "Benjamin Goldfinch" is, indeed, a dual creation), while in the latter little masterpiece his lifelike I I embodiment of the irascible, but aristocratic, old earl has made "A Quiet Rubber" as I famous as "Waterloo" was with Sir Henry Irving. And "A Pair of Spectacles" is to Hare what "The Bells" was to Irving. It was in the early days' of 1890 that John Hare appeared for the first time in Mr. Sydney ¡ Grundy's remarkably skilful adaptation from the French at the Garrick Theatre, where he recently terminated his last brilliantly suc- cessful London season with this wonderful play and performance, which must endure for many years in the hearts and memories of the British playgoer, and be handed down to posterity as one of the finest records of English acting. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday even- ings the entire London production of The Gay Lord Quex," direct from the Garrick Theatre, will be seen, Sir John Hare repeat- ing his original and striking role of the "Marquess of Quex," In Pinero's brilliant, witty, and mordant society play Sir John's "Marquess" long since achieved fame, and the production is one of particular beauty and taste. On Thursday evening, for the only time, Sir John will be seen as "Eccles" in "Oaste," another of his most popular and versatile achievements.
