THE CiMMRMlvijf, i <ii'ra<fr3fre-ff-"p' SWANSEA, FRIDAY, Oct. 3. Extract of a letter fivnt .ljmdon, dated eight o'clock, Wt-dnmluy evening lasfj Lord Morpeth left town this morning on his C, journey to Berlin. It is said that his Lordship is empowered to negotiate aifi]>sidiary treaty bet ween I England and the. new confederacy. T t .,j "I. a "The two French frigate* which have of late annoyed our trade on the Greenland coast turn out to be the Seine and Rtvanche, by which a vessel called the Eddys tone, Capt. Sarinar, bound to Lon- don from Quebec, w is captured on the. 3d ult. in lat. 49. 15. long. 15. SO, out of which.they took the Captain, the crew, and the most valuable part of the cargo, consistni of til the furs. On the 19th, the Eddystone wa if c tplured off Cape Finistcrte by his Majesty's hntd armed brig Çolpoys, and is since arrived at Plymouth. The Sarah, Capt, Mansfield, from Quebec, was taken on the 15th ult. by two French frigates, and burnt. Our anxiety for the Jamaica fleet has not been alleviated by any advices or fuctnerinforma-! tion respecting it. V, Sir Stephen Lushington, pne of the Indi;\ D> rectors, lies dangerously ill, nor is it supposed that he can live long, A private canvass for his seat in- tlie direction has already commenced." v* POLITICAL SUMMARY. The military preparations of Pi ussia—-the move- ments of the French troops—the threats of the I'repch journals—the state to which Bonaparte and bis Prussian Majesty seem to be reduced, of neither nrst holding out to their subjects and to Europe, the -of compliance or subniission-r~4nd, above all" the reconciliation'so unexpectedly ei- fect^.d between the Prussian and the British Ca- binets, strongly-connrni the general opinion, that the renewal of continental hostilities must soon take,, place. Of Bonaparte's character we baye kid too long aud too l^tai an experience, not to be cun- vinced that his glory, his proclominarit passions, and his interest, connected, as^it is with his ascen- dency Over all who presume to oppose him in the field, will prevent him from yieiding a single jot of the points in dispute. He must be aware, if he- now gives way, th.tt.the boasted inflexibility of,his resolutions win no longer be estimated as he wishes, and that whether as a dictator abroad, or a sove- reign at home, his will and his iuthience will lose much of that weight, to which, for the last four years, lie has been.indebted for no inconsiderable portion of his successes and aggrandizement. He may indeed employ his favourite instruments oi intrigue- .corruption, and perii.ly; but he will ex-' erci.se thexn only that he may more effectually crush the povyer- which has dared to challenge him to a fresh contest, From him, therefore, we expect nq compromise,-no concession, unless it be temporary, and calculated to render the, fall of Prussia more complete and disgraceful. Resentful, fierce, and i Inexorable, he will acknowledge no law but his ownwiU, no appeal but to the -sword. Nothing either can or will satisfy him but the voluntary de- gradation of the King of Prussia by a previous act of suhinissio;), or the subversion of his throne by force of arm?. It rs a question o'fpreddmin^ce, not in Germain alune, but on the whole of the c%t- t.inent, and Bonaparte, alter laying prostrate at his feet the dignities and honours of the bouse of A|is| tria, will not tamely submit to have a rival in fW King of Prussin. With respect to the latter, wis have, it. cannot be denied, fair and ample promise of vigour Hiid spirit; bui we cannot easily banish from our recolh ctiou the fluctuation'of the Prus- sian. councils, and their dastardly submission to thedktaJes of Bonaparte yet we5 hope not again to witnessthesáfne fatal tn n tity and equivocating spirit. The adjustment, of our differences with Prussia is a strong pledge of the revival of honour and vigour in her political system. Whether the restoration of I Lin over is, to follow the. reconci- liationwith- the Court of Berlin, we cannot under- take to Say, but this will most likely be the case. "The renewal of hostilities entireiy depends upon the resolution and firmness of the King of Prussia; and notwithstanding the immense force which may be brought against him, he has inuch less to fear' with respect to the issue of the contest, than Austria had long before the unfortunate affair of Ulm. Some time must indeed elapse before he can be joined by any considerable corps of Rus- sians, and Bonaparte will certainly exert every art to draw over, or to neutralize Saxony and Hesse. But if these two powers continue steady to their engagements, be wih be enabled to meet the enemy, if eventheyshollld be in sight of each other in. the course of this week, with a force exceeding two hundred thousand men. The troops, of S i\ony and Hesse may be moderately calcu lated at 50,000 men, and the Swedish ariny of about 20,000 win co-operate against the French. Thus, in point of numbers,, Prussia will in the outset of the contest be at least on equal terms with her enemy, and in the prosecution of it, we trust, she will not took h) vain for the generous feelings. the. ardent spirit, the intrepid magnanimity of a leader, who knows he is struggling for every thing most dear to him- self and his people. The contest will be a most awful one. Prussia fights, in fact, for her political existence. Should the result of the conflict be against iner, she must sink into as arrant a vassal of France as Holland, Wirtehlburgh, or Bavaria. We, however, do not despair of seeing her come triumphantly out of the coatest. In point of experience and practice, the French officers have in general the advantage of theitcompetitors; but the Prussian army is hot without many officers of very great talents ann ex- perience. As to the quality of the troops, it can- not be better than it is. The whole army is ani- mated with the ancient spirit which Frederick the Great infused into it, and pants for an opportunity of measuring irs strength with the enemy. We look H-ithsome confidence, fa the conduct of Austria upon this occasion. We do not thhut s'he wijl continue a quietspectatress of the scene which is passing before her eyes- Any dem n? laionon her part must be of essential service to Prussia If she assembles fifty Qr sixty .'thousand men upot any of her frontiers, nearly the s.iine number of men must be taken from the disposeable' force of Bonaparte to observe them The accounts by the last mail state, that 'Considerable magi/iuts are forming in Bohemia. We shall expecAo he r, m the course of a few days, that a formidable anny has also been collected there, under pretence of maintaiuing the inviolability of her territory, but really with the intent ot taking advantage of any opportunity which may occur of taking.Vengeance lor the countless calamities and disgraces which she has suffered Irom France. b Arrived at Sic a, Major GeneralWarde, Mr. and Wood;, Miss Jit iihi »» Ir• O'Brien, Mrs. Tliomas, 2 Misses es C', Mpnday last \\illiam Jones, Esq. was chosen Portreeve of this town for thE ensuing year. Danc- ing commenced immediately after tea. and supper was served on two tables; the first-for the visitants, where both eye and palate were highly gratified^ was most beautifully decorated with corn, flowers, and ton r handsome transparencies painted tor the purpose; the second, for the harvest servants, &c. loaded with-plenty, and cheerfuliy surrounded by the honest sons and daughters of labour, Exhibited a scene truly pleasing and characteristic. Dancing re-commenced after supper, and continued till four o'clock next morning, when the company departed highly delighted with the politeness and attention of the worthy host. Mr Joseph Reynolds, of Ketley Iron-works, Salop, after grcqt trouble and expellee, has fully deuioii- strated, that casting, or letting, the iron out of each of his blast-furnaces four times in 24 hours, so far improves the quality, as to make bar-iron equal if not superior to that of Sweden and Russia. Worcester Music-Meeting concluded on Thurs- day: the Messiah, 011 that morning, and theConcerts 011 Wednesday and Thursday evenings, attracted a most splendid and nmnefous assemblage, particu- larly the formfer." Upon the whole, there never has been a meeting so weii attended since hivs Majesty's visit in 178H; or which (highly to the credit of Mr. Ciark, the Conductor) gave more universal satis tac- faction. The total collection lor the benefit of the C'harity amounted to., 11.1,1.98. Id. Diamond cut Diumond.—About a fortnight ago, a farmer, near Ripon, took his waggon to a neigh- bouring village, and engaged as many reapers as filled the ivagr"0n, under a promise of high wages at the moment he was driving off. another farmer stepped np and told them, that he would give each reaper 6d. a Say more thai the person thev had engaged with, if they woul l j nt their present mas- j ter and/enter into his service: allured by this offer, they all engaged immediately with the best bidder, • except one woman, who wenthome with her mas- ter, and at hight received a guinea, note for he day's wages. This circumstance she did not fail to communicate to those who h^d gone to work for.- the other farmer, under a. promise of an additional 6d, a day they all of course insisted upon a fulfil- ment of the agreement, and the farmer, after having been summoned before a magistrate, was obliged to pay each of his labourers ll. Is. 6d. a day.
