WEDNESDAY, January 4. betters from Holland, of the ftb instant, were yesterdayreceived. They state that a proclama- tion was issued by the Dutch Government on the 1st instant, forbidding, under severe.penalties, the subjects, of Hoihind. from hoidmg a»v commercial or Irtandiy intercourse wliitfvir wiLli. the subjects of Great Britain. A postscnpt to one oi these let- ters, however, adds, that much of the severity of the regulations which affected• the commercial in- terests of. that country, more especially as coa- Eecced with England, has heed remitted, 'and a fur- ther relaxation of those restraints is daily expected. The Dutch letters contain no othefc news of im- ortance. Detachments of the 5th, 25th, and 89th regi- ments, amounting to nearly 300 men, have been landed within these few day's, at W hits table, ami. are now at Ospringe and Fevershaiu, These, troops c^oristitu ted .part of the expedition which sailed in r ior,the Elbe, and were wrecked on the coast or Holland, where they were taken prisoner's. They are sent home, upon t k ir p m, The con- duct of the Dutch Goven n t towards them is highly honourable. They were treated with the greatest, kindness and attention. Advices received sinceoudast from the Conti- nent have. it is reported, brought the important intelligence of the seizure of Hanover by Prussia.. Should this rumour turn out to be well founded, it will afford another and a very Substantial proof of that selfish, ungenerous 'policy, which has too often prevailed iu the cabinet of Berlin. The enormity of such conduct appears indeed to us so glaring and disgraceful, -that?< till the arrival of more authentic intelligence, we feel very reluctant to admit the truth of the report. Other letters arc said to state, that an arrangement has been made between Prus- sia and France, t9 shut out British commerce from the Prussian ports. We are at a loss what com- ment to makeupon these assertions, hut should they ultimately be borne up by facts, we must aver, that Prussia wants only the power to extend her imperious and oppressive disposition as widely as ever France has done. The conduct of Lord Cathcart, as represented, has been highly gallant,, emiticiit,ly characteristic of that spirit which animates hiscountry. ■' What. eftect these-advices;, may prodnce on the new administration remains to be seen. They cer- tainly have to contend against disadvantages nove) and difficult: but wo trust that every adverse cir- cuinstance will excite corresponding fortitude, that the native spirit of Britain will not be. stifled, but that evfry insult will be met with intrepidity, and repelled with indignation. The leading persons ia the new administration have now entered upon their arduous depar- ments, and the minor appointments, though not finally determined, are in a state of considerable forwardness. We hope that unanimity, so neces- sary to the dignity and even the existence of this country, will be preserved iinthe cabinet, that frocii the ashes of the opposition may arise a pheenu, whose brilliance shall astonish and cl^eer the na- tion. Various reports respecting French fleets seen in difrerent latitudes h..ve been received. If they VC correct, we may indulge in the hope that f of them may be overtaken by our squadrons.
