FOOTBALL. THE WELSH ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP CORWEX V. BALA. Corwen having been drawn to play their first tie against Bala, and having played two matches, one at Corwen and the other at Bala, which both resulted in a draw it was 'decided by the committee of the Association at Wrex- ham that both clubs should play again, and it was agreed that the third match should be played at Corwen on Saturday, the 24th instant at 2 30. The visitors, who drove from Bala, arrived at Corwen by 1 30. The home team having won the toss, the ball was set going by the visitors' captain at 2 40. The Corwen backs were much stronger this time, and their playing merited the oft-re- peated applause of the bystanders. Their forwards also made several good runs, but, kicking into touch, lost the advantage they had gained. However, little before half time was called, Roberts on the right wing made a good run and passed nicely to Williams, who took the leather well in front of tne visitors' goal, and after a slight scrim- mage it was passed through by'Fuller, thus scoring the first goal to Corwen. Before the ball could be put again in play half time was called. On changing ends the visi- tors had the wind in their favour, and their playing was excellent. The ball was several times kicked behind the home team goal, and during the last quarter of an hour the play was chiefly confined to the Corwen side of the ground, and desperate were the attempts made to lower their colours, but thanks to the Corwen backs, and es- pecially James and Cole, all their efforts were futile, and the game ended in favour of Corwen by one goal to none. The home team were as follows :—Goal, R. Price; back W. Cole half-backs, L. E. James, R. Williams, and m! Morris right wing, J. Roberts and E. H. Williams; left wing, P. Jones and T. P. Fuller centres, J. P. Davies and E. H. Williams; umpire. Mr. D. JoneV We are sorry that we cannot give a list of the visitors' team. Corwen have been drawn to play their second tie against Bangor, which will be played at Corwen in about a fort- night's time.

THE RESTRICTION OF LABOUR IN COLLIERIES. The summonses against 125 miners employed at L mdliill Col- liery, for neglecting work and restricting labour, were heard on Friday, Nov. 2;?, before the Barnsley Bench. Tho greatest in- terest was taken in the proceedings. The Company prosecuted under a by-law which provided that a man should perform a fair day's work, and the important question of restriction was thus raised. Only one case was gone into, and it was shown the de- fendant had restricted his labour on a certain day to such an extent that the Company lost nearly e3 by that action. The restriction of 100 men, therefore, for several days, would cause the Company a serious loss. The legal objection raised bv the men's attorney was that their contract, :is proved by the prose- cution, was void, because of the want of mutuality", and a case was granted on this point. An adjournment was ultimately made for a week.

The Rev. Michael Edwards, late curate of Llanfair Caoreinion, Welshpool, and now of Rhosddu, Wrexham, has been preferred by the Bishop of St. Asaph to the sole charge of Capel Garmon. Death of Mr. Pryce-Jones.—We regret exceedingly to have to record the death, in the prime of life, of Mr. John Prycc-Jones, of The Grove Park, Wrexham, and formerly of Oswestry. The writer of this is able to speak a3 more than a mere acquaintance, of the sterling worth of the deceased, for their intimacy began a quarter of a century ago, and from merely business connection at first, ripened into a friendship which has led to constant interchange of visits during the whole of that period. Mr. Pryce-Jones, then in the full power of early manhood, established a school in Oswestry about the time we have mentioned, and for some years worked it up to a state of considerable position and popularity, when he transferred it to Mr. Hillier, in whose hands it still flourishes. Mr. Pryce- Jones then took a bold step in entering on the large and expensive premises called The Groves, at Wrexham once a famous school, but long fallen into decay. Here by perseverance and indomitable energy he gradually formed an academy second to none in North Wales and the Border Counties—often, indeed, as we have seen, when Sir Watkin and others have distributed the prizes, taking the lead of all other schools in the number and rank of his prize scholars. But though so successful as a master, Mr. Pryce-Jones was always a learner. We have rarely interchanged visits with him but he has had some new study in hand; and, always an early riser, his studies were often prosecuted at an hour when most men were still sleeping. In addition to his private studies and school labours, Mr. Pryce-Jones was an earnest worker in everything that li3 thought tended to the highest good of his fellows. A constant preacher in the ranks of that most useful of all lay organizations, the Methodist connexion, his pulpit ministrations were marked with an earnestness and thoughtfulness that were always appreciated, and as a lecturer lie was popular and instructive. His last public act—and that one per- formed when he ought rather to have been in bed than exposed to the cold autumnal air—was the laying of the foundation-stone of the new Welsh Wesleyan Chapel at Oswestry. Every one who saw him on that day was struck with the changed look in his, usually, ruddy, and cheerful face but his energy carried him through the ceremony, and he went home, never to rally, and on Saturday to die. Mr. Pryce-Jones was a borough magistrate for Wrexham, a member of the School Board, and in other ways a valuable public man. His loss will be deeply felt by his fellow-townsmen, and by a large circle of the Methodist body, but by none as by the widow and five children he leaves behind him. I ne funeral took Tilace at Wrexham on Wednesday, and was attended by a large number of Mr. PryTce Jones s irieuds from various parts of the district. DISTRESS IN MONMOUTHSHIRE. Miss Elizabeth Slatter, of Ash Grove, Pontypool, in a letter to the Daily Newg, s'\ys The ironworks at Abersychan, in Monmouthshire, have now been closed for more than Pightecn months, and the Irish labourers who were employed there are now reduced to a state of utter destitution. All the strong young men who could leave the place have one, but men with large families cannot get away. During the summer months they obtained a day's work here and there oil the railway or in the harvest field, and earned just enough to keep up a. sort of stagnant life in themselves and their families but now they wander about in vain, and return with liuuger-stricken faces and empty hands to their starving wives and children. The whole neighbourhood is so impoverished in consequence of the collapse in the iron trade that few can afford to give relief. We have all done what we can. More than fifty young girls who used to gain their living in or about the works have been clothed and sent off to service in Preston and elsewhere but there are still over two hundred children in our school, shivering in the scantiest clothing, and pale and thin from hunger. It is for these I entreat help, that we may be able to give them a meal at least two or three times a week. Subscriptions in money, food, or clothing, will be most thankfully received by me, or by the Rev. F. Joachim, St. Alban's, Pontypool, or to the care of W. Collins, Esq., West of England and South Wales Bank, Pontypool."
