PRESENTATION TO JIB. ENOCH…
PRESENTATION TO JIB. ENOCH JAMES, CARDIFF. On Saturday evening a meeting was held at the Wesleyaa Chapel. East Moors, Cardiff, for the purpose of presenting Mr. Enoch James, late manager of the Dowlais Cardiff Works, with silver plate, consisting of a large tny, salver, pair of candelebras, and i/wo entree dishes, as a token of the respect and esteem in which he was held by the workmen, on the occasion of his leaving to become general manager of the Patent Shaft and Axletree Company, Wednesbury.—Mr. W. H. James, of Lewis's Merthyr Colliery Company, occupied the chair.—In his open- ing remarks the Chairman expressed the pleasure it afforded him to preside at a meet- ing held to jiouour a man so worthy of their respect and admiration. In a humorous speech he referred to Mr. James's upright' ness oi character and keen sense of justice, and the prominent position be had attained the iron and steel trades.—Mr. Lewis, Bute Docks, a-iso addressed the meeting, and gave expression to the general regret at Mr. James's departure from amongst them, and, whilst wishing him great prosperity in his new sphere, hoped they might soon have the pleasure of welcoming him back again to Wales.—Councillor J. D. Thomas was asked to make the presentation as an old personal friend of the recipient. In a graceful speech Mr. Thomas referred to Mr. James's past history, and to the manner in which he had fulfilled the trying and onerous duties of doing iustice between employer and employes doing iustice between employer and employes moral character.—Mr. James, on rising to respond, was received with acclamation. In thanking them for their handsome and valu- able present, he said he felt there were con- siderations that would cause him to value their gift very highly. They had known him for many years and. if he made any pretentions at being other than he really was that would not be a suitable place for doing 80. Knowing him as they did, they must admit that in obtaining their good will he had never sacrificed the interests of his em- ployers, for, had he any doubt upon that point, no present, however valuable, would afford him any satisfaction. It had alwavs been his endeavour to do his best for his em- ployers as weQl as for them. They knew very well that they had not contributed towards that testimonial in return for any favours received. At each of the works he had hitherto conducted he had made the best use of the men found there, but at Cardiff they were starting a new works, and trained men had to be brought from other places, and in making a selection he was guided solely by their qualifications and character, ana he felt proud of the class of men appointed. He felt they owed him nothing, and, if any gift was due, it was from the company he served, and to whom he had given honest and faithful services, spending many sleepless nights in overcoming some of the difficulties thev had to contend with -After the usual vote of thanks to the chairman, the meeting closed with the singing of the Welsh National Anthem. During the evening vocal and instrumental music was rendered by Messrs. A. Powell, D. John, and W. Phillips.
