; ? OUR SHORT STORY
? OUR SHORT STORY I OUT OF THE RUNNING. "I expect it is only one of the usual Nonsensical mysteries that turn out to be moonshine when one arrives on the scene of ftotion. I have half a mind not to go." "In for a penny in for a pound, Tony," remarked my oldest brother, who had lately returned to the bosom of his family from 11 long sojourn in New Zealand, and conse- quently was not well up 6n heme affairs. "Sinoo you are prime favourite with the old dan es, and have alroady suffered a good df1aJ. at their hands, you may as well keep on to the bitter end when a reward may be forth- coming." "Perhaps you are right; but perhaps, also, you are not tware of the last important event for which I was summoned inn hot haste. It was exceetdi.igiv inconvenient for me to be spared from the office, but the eighteen-penny wire was so urgent that I got leaive and hurried off, expecting to findl either Janet or Luoinda at death's door. And what do you think it WM?" "Not "being well acquainted with the manners aiud customs of my aged relative^ It is im- possible to say." "The census papers had come in. The two old ladies were in a perfect flutter at having to put down their ages. Finally, after much cogitation, they made themselves out 36 and 40 (they must both be not far short of double those numbers); then, when the paper had gone, they were seized with the qualms of con- JktiArvna "And this wire runs to ?" I "Just upon two shillings," I said, counting the words on the orange missive before me. "Then, dear boy, I should put my feelings in my pocket, stifle all regrets for the dance you will miss, and go. It is a duty you owe to your family. A snug little legaoy apieoa would be a godsend." I inwardly groaned at the ordeal before me; but, seeing the wisdom of the advice, wired back that I would start early the next day. My father's spinster sisters Janet and Lucinda Boyer, had been my betes-noirea from a child. They 'had taken a fancy to me when I was in my csgdle. The fancy had largely developed throughout my school days, during which period nothing but the quarterly tips induced me to submit to an annual visit at their prim [ suffered agonies from the keen interest they took in my dawning moustache, when they per- sisted in drawing the attention of strangers to the fact that "Tony, dear boy, was getting quite a man, and would soon have suci' a beard." When I had grown into man s estate (though without th.? beard) they constituted me their adviser m chief, and sent for me oax every possible and impossible occa- sion. My father—many years their junior— had not prospered in the world, and had, more- over, a large family to provide for, so when it WM discovered that the rich maiden aunts .iaad token to BMi. I was m&dfi. much agftinrt my will, the victim for the family in general. The Misses Boyer led the quietest, mewt mono- tonous of lives in the quietast of couutry vil. lages, far removed from the busy hum of the nearest provincial town, their domestic arrange- ments having been guided and direoted for years by Williamson, an irreproachable butler, who had, according to his own account, "seen better days." As he had lived with my aunts over 40 years, and before that had been a con- siderable time in their father's employ, it had always struck me that the halcyon days in question must have occurred ait an extremely early stage of his existence. Be that as it may, Williamson, was looked up to by all the household as a species of demi-god, whose word it would be sacrilege to doubt, let alone dis- obey. He always condescended to open the door in the afternoon, being anxious, I fancy, to know exactly who visited his mistresses. I was surprised, therefore, when I arrived at the house, to be admitted by a raw young foot- man, evidently unused to his work. "I hope Williamson is not ill. It is un- usual not to see him," I remarked, as the youthful Jeames assisted me to struggle out of my ulsfer. "Mr. Williamson ill? Oh! no, sir, thank you. He enjoys hia usual 'ealth, sir. Mr. Williamson ili-hout, sir." A spasmodic grin crossed his face as he spoke. For a moment it seemed as if he was going into convulsions cf laughter, but pulling himself together, he showed me into the drawing-room, where my two aunts were sitting in their usual places by the fire. I thought then: was a shade of embarrassment in their manner of greeting me, but until the young footman had brought in and afterwards removed tea. the conversation waeconfined to jftueral topicl. Khan, amidet a duet of nervous little coughs and clearings of the throat, they proceeded to enlighten me as to the cause of their distress. Williamson, a month ago, had given notice to leave. "He—he gave us to understand that he wished to marry," faltered Lucinda. "One of vs." coooluded Janet, fcolemnly. "What!" I cried, springing to my feet. "Confound his impudence I am very 6kd you did send for me." Lucinda. begao to sob. "Tony, you distress your aunt by this vio- lence," expostulated Janet. "Lucinda, pray let me continue the narration alono until your nerves are quieted. You must remember, Tony," turning to me, "that you lived too far off for daily consultation, and that Mr. Wil- liamson, ever since the death of our lamented father, had been a pr )p and stay in every emer- I gency. We felt we simply could not live with- out his assistance. As lie did not appear to mind which of us should honour him with our hand, v/e decided to cast lots as to who should make the sacrifice. I, as the elder, wrote our names on two slips of paper. Your aunt Lucinda then blindfolded me, and I inserted the slip3 in separate places of the Bible. We agreed to read attentively the pages between which the slips had been placed, and the pas- sage that pointed most clearly to a duty to be accomplished was to indicate which of us should become the wife of Mr. Williamson. The slip bearing my name rested in a portion of scripture in which there was no mention whatever of duty, whereas Lucinda's "You don't mean to say rhe is actually going to marry him?" I said, a wild idea of strang- ling Williamson before he could get hold of our future legacies, darting across my brain. "She has already done so. We wished to send for you to act the part of father, but Mr. Willianusoa would not how of it." "Crafty old fox," I mentally ejaculated. "They were married by licence in our parish church a week -ago. Yesterday we decided to communicate the event to the family circle, so telegraphed for you, feeling sure you would be the bearer of the news after your visit here had terminated-" The entrance of the re- doubtable Williamson h im." elf, prevented my reply. "Well. Tony, my boy, you did not expect to find an uncle ready and waiting to welcome you, eh?" he cried, giving me a hearty slap en the back. I nearly ohoked with indignation. To be slapped on the back and greeted as "Tony, my boy," by the man who, during my last visit not two months ago, had been all smoothness and obssquious civility, wtas adding insult to injury with a vengeance. "Time to change," he eou.timied, pealing the bell as he spoke, "ilob-srt, show Mr. Boyer to his room, and mind dinner's on the table sharp, to-day, d'ye hear?" I wr„s on the point of saying that, undeir the circumstances, I would prefer not to remain, but the thought of those wretched legacies com- pelled me to pocket my pride. Though Wiliamson would take pretty good care to secure the bulk of tihe fortune, some windfall might perchance come to us if I continued in favour with my aunts. Ishall never forget that dinner. The ex-ibutler headed the table in iieu of Aunt Janet, who sat meekly at the side. The pompous air with which he found fault with the soup, praised the claret, and rounded on the unfortunate Robert, who, he informed me in it stage whisper, was new to the place; the condescending manner in which he unbent to answer seme timid question of 's wife's, who sat red-eyed and eubdued opposite to himI; the fiat contradictions he Ave to Aunt Janet's more spirited remarks, and the patronis- ing tone he adopted towards myself, made me inwardly thankful that urgent business would compel me to leave early the next morning. When my aunts rose from table I immediately prepared to follow them. Sit over even with the choicest of wine with that man I could not. He stared at me, and seemed about to make some disagreeable remark, but, thought better of it, and quickly joined1 us in the drawing-room, announcing hig intention of playing whist. I "Better than with a dummy, Tony?" he said with a leer, as we seated ourselves. It had always been the custom for me to take dummy at the invariable rubber which in days gone by had been my aunt's delight. How I wished the whisky and seltzer for which he presently called would choke him, but it only increased nifi bmmptiousnesc, and made him lord it more over his unfortunate wife. When the game was over he proposed a cigar in the library but, pleading the early hour that my train gtartod on the morrow, I beat a retreat to my room, running, the gauntlet on the road thither of a whole bevy of tittering maidservants, evidently on the watjh to see how I had taken the news. "Poor young' feller, it's awfuJ 'ard oR him," I heard one damsel remark. But the bitterest piil of all was on the morrow, when Williamson in- sist-ea on accompanying me to the station. "Guess I've cut you out this time, youig man," lie said, as I took my seat in the corner of a smoking carriage. "You thought you'd nothing to do but walk over the ground easy, didn't you now? But your affectionate uncle has been one too many for you, Tcny, my boy. The two old ladies aire under my thumb, so you won't get a penny unless I ohose. Ta, ta, my dear nephew," as the train glided off. I could not get the window down in time, or I should have thrown prudence to the winds anA let fly a valediction the revtme pf oompiimentaiy. r We still live in hopes of our legacies, but I don't think they will be worth the mortification I endure each time I. am oompelled to meet our objectionable old uncle. The End.

NATIONAL PARTY AND THE RADICALS. Speaking at Blackburn on Friday night, Mr. Dillon, M.P., referred to the over-taxa- tion of Ireland, as disclosed by t-he investiga- tion of the recent Royal Commission, and saiid the remedy for this injustice was Home Rule. Ridiculous statements had been made respect- ing their relations to the Liberal party. They were fillies of the Liberal party because the latter waa honest in its intention to give Home Rule.

DEST» ACTION OF DRUIDICAL…
DEST» ACTION OF DRUIDICAL REMAINS. Much indignation has been caused among those interested in the preservation of exist- ing memorials of a past age by the recent dis- covery of Exeter antiquarians that a number of the interesting Druidical remains on and around Dartmoor had been destroyed, notably' one that was known as the Stone-avenue, at Bel Tor comer, on Sherberton Common. In- vestigation being made, it was found that the demolition of this relic, ae well as the partial destruction of some of the "hut-circles" which abound on Dartmoor, was the work of the j contractors of the Newton Rural District Council, who had smashed the stones into fragments for t'he purpose of repairiug the surface of the roaas. It was subsequently ascertained that "hut-circles" and "menhirs" in other peaces had also completely disappeared. The matter wam taken up by various societies, and representations were made to the Newton Council, with the result that the chawman of •that body has now intimated to one of the j correspondents that the surveyor te the council 1 has been instructed to see that nothing of the I. kind shall be again allowed to occur. ?-
