The lirm s so well known iu Cardiff ail4' iudeed, throughout South Wales and the West of England that it is hardly necessary here to well uuon its influence and commanding position. This collection of tes<imonia':s serves, however, to do something- more than certify to the excellence of the instruments furnished by Messrs. Heath and Sons. It shows, in a sense how steady is the growth among the generai public of a desire for a knowlodue of music, ami how increasingly numerous, even m the homes of the workine classes are mauos, onrans, ana harmoniums. PROFESSIONALISM. The Meeting of the Rugby Football Union. I The agenda paper has been issued for the special general meeting of the Rugby Union, to be held on December 28 in London and contains notice of amendments to the motions proposed by Yorkshire in opposition to the tirst circular issued by the Rugby Commit- tee. Mr. W. Cail, on behalf of the com- mittee, will move to leave out the words after "meeting," and insert, "is of opinion that the committee's revised circular truly inter- prets the powers which are vested m them under the bve-laws of this Union and the rules as to professionalism. Proposed by Gloucester, and seconded by the Bristol and Stroud Clubs, "That this meeting recognises (1) the necessity of stringent steps being taken by the committee to enable them to deal effectively with cases of professionalism, and considers that they acted within their powers in passing Clauses 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of their manifesto of November 1 last, but that. with regard to Clause 2 this meeting is of opinion that it is as at present worded too far reach CT in its effect, seeing that it necessitates the punishment of every offence, great or small, with expulsion. giving the committee no discvetion in the matter, and this meeting suggests to the committee that this clause should be modi- fied by the substitution for that portion of I it which follows the word 'ticket-holders' of the words 'slia-11 at the discretion of the committee be punished either by expulsion or suspension, a,nd the permanent or tempo- rary suspension of all their members and official and with regard to Clause 4, it is the feeling of this meeting that it effects such a very drastic alteration in the present mode of procedure that; the committee would do weN not to insist upon its adoption until it has been fully considered and approved by this meeting; (2) that the admission or otherwise of representatives of the press to meetings of the committee be left entirely to tae C'lscretion of the committee for t-h'e time oeing. Pronosed by P. Maud (Black- neath), and seconded bv W. The service on Tuesday night- was* well attended, the sacred edifice being- crowd«d. The Bishop opened the service by reciting- some special dedicatory collects.—An impressive gp, mon was preached by the Rev. TV. M. O. Ducat, principal of Cuddesdon College.—The offertory was for the building- fund, "towards which about £ 1.200 is still needfd. The building, as completed at present, consists of a large girls' Sunday school 73ft. long by ?5ff., wide, infants' schools 35ft. by 21ft., and two clasS-rcoms and porch. This speaks well for th< security which the town can offer to the investing public.

--I POLITICAL CLUBS.
POLITICAL CLUBS. Powerful Retort to Cardiff's M.P, by Dr. Treharne. On Tuesday evening a meeting under the auspices of the Splott Conservative. Association, was held at Splott Board Schools, under the piesidency of I'r. Treharne (president of the Cardiff Conservative Association). There was a large attendance. The Chairman, in opening the proceedings, referred to the recent board of guardians elec- tions, and said the results had been most grati- fying to them as Conservatives, after the posi- tion which they had taken up. (Applause.) The position that the women candidates occu- pied in the polls was a position due largely to the support and sympathy that they hull rtceived from the Conservative party in the tCWD. (Applause.) Proceeding, 1)1'. Treharne dealt with the claim made by Mr E. J. Reed to moderation of speech. They had a keen remembrance of the virulent abuse which Sir E. J. Reed had poured upon their heads from time to time, calimg them hang-dog Tories, and stating that they were supported by the scunr of the population; anu they also remembered how —* .^Y. H. Smith, one of the most upright of men was told by Sir E. J. HE-eri that he was supported by the strumpets of the Strand. ("Shame.') Sir E. J. Reed had. p.isse:i some strong criticisms on Conservative clubs in faidiif, but he (the speaker) believed that what Mr. Robert Bird and Sir E. J. Reed were more concerned about were the politics rather than the morals of the cjlubs. (Applause.) If that was not so, why should working men bs denied the right to have clubs'/ Was not Sir Edward Retd a member of the National Liberal C.ub in London and other clubs? (Applause.) D:d Sir E..J. Reed mean them to suppose that beer meant "booze" and champagne meant politics? (Laughter and applause.) Sir E. J. Keed was connected with the Central Liberal Working Men's Club. He (Dr. Treharne) had seen the balance-sheet of the Liberal Working Men's Club, and, comparing it with that of the Roath Conservative Club, he found that the Sunday receipts of thf- latter. were not one-third those of the former. (Applause.) He (the speaker) would like to see the hours limited in their Conservative clubs more than they were at present—although at present they were limited. But there were no limitations with reference to the Liberal Working Men's Club—(hear, hear*—while he was told that- debates, songs, and even clog dancing occurred there on Sundays. (Sensation). Mr. Bird was a contributor to and in the enjoyment of a small revenue from sums of money embarked in this club. (Hear, hear.) Conservative clubs were focuss.es and centres of political activity, and this was what Mr. Robert Bird and Sir E. J. Reed objected to. (Applause.) Mr. Herbert C. Lewis, who was most cor- dially received, next addressed the meeting at length on political and social ouestions. Having spoken of the interminable Homl" Rule ques- tion. and contended that the Unionist party was more c-apable of carrying out reform* in this country than their Radical opponents. Mr. Lewis touched upon the questions of one man one vote, triennial Parliaments, and payment of members, and pointed out the absurdity of attempting to brine about- a univerFal eight hours day. He admitted, however. thpre were oa.ses in whieh State interference should take place—the ca^es of railway men, for instance. (Applause.) What did the Liberal party say wJwn they were a-ked what the." were o-oing tn do? "Home Rule blocks the wav—no thoroughfare. (Laughter and anphmse.1 The Unionist I)Irt;v were not- blocked by Home Rule, and they were -prepared to take up social and domestic 1 (>c-islatioT1 as soon as they were returned to office. (Applause.) The TTnion'=t partv bad a programme of construction. He urged them to ^ipport the Unionist party. A vote of thinks wa" nrnpoRed to Mr. H. r. SCOTTISH" PREMIERS.
SCOTTISH" PREMIERS. Proposed Memorials to the Earls of Bute. Aberdeen, and Rosebery. 0 It has been suggested (says thp "World") that a subscription should be raised in Scot- land for the purpose of erecting a fitting memo- rial in some conspicuous part of Edinburgh in honour of the. three eminent Scottish thanes who have now enjoyed the distinction of being 'Prime Ministers of England. John Earl of Bute, George Earl of Aberdeen, and Archihalci Earl of Rosebery are certainly a leash of states- men who deserve to be remembered. Even if the project of a. public memorial to them should fnil--and subscriptions are not popular in Scot- land— thev can hardly be forgotton on either side of the Tweed.
ANOTHER VACANCY.
ANOTHER VACANCY. Sudden Death of Sir E. Lechmere M.P. The Press AsMtciation Evesham correspon- dent telegraphs that Sir Edward Leehmere, M.P., died very suddenly on Tuesday night at Pershore. He wa.s about to address a large meeting of his constituents in the Music-hall, and was apparently in the best of health before enlcring the hall. He was talking, apparently in good spirits, to one of his supporters, when he feli aprainst the side of the table. He then saiii. "I am all right." These were his last words, for he almost immediately expired. The cause of death is attributed to epilepsy. The Karl of Coventry, who was to have presided at the meeting, announced the sad news with tu.tch eirct-ion, and those present quietly dis- persed.

MR. GLADSTONE'S SEAT. Somebody is Going to Find Him an Easy One. The "World" says:—Although Mr. Glad- stone ha-s announced that he will not again stand for Midlothian, he will, in all probability, have a seat in the next Parliament. A benevolent member of the House of Commons, I am told, has fully determined that, in spite of Mr. Gladstone's neglect to invite, him to become his colleague in office, he will secure Mr. Glad- stone as his colleague in the representation of his own especial constituency at the approach- ing general election. Whether Mr. Gladstone will or will not accept the unsolicited dis- tinction is another question. But the Steward- ship of the Chiltern Hundreds is not an official post to which he seems likely to aspire, should lie be returned under s,uch agreeable and un- expected circumstances.

TIN-PLATE TRADE.
TIN-PLATE TRADE. Another Interview with Mr. J. H Rogers. Mr. J. H. Rogers, manager of the South W ales Tin-plate Works. Lianelly. has been interviewed by a representative of the "South Wales Daily Post" upon matters relating to his works in America and his views upon the. competition between this country and the United States. At the outset, Mr. Rogers denied that the men at Gas City had accepted a reduction -.f 25 per cent., and declared that they were- working at the same rate as when his company began making in America. He said that the collapse hi the tin-plate trade was not due to a falling off at the present moment of the demand for tin-plates from Wales by America. Mr. Rogers also repudiated the insinuation.that had been made that his ulterior motive in accepting a reduction of 10 per cent, from his workmen in South Wales was to pro- tect the future of the American industry, and declared it would lie the height of folly to try and sacrifice their Welsh interests in order to support their small interests in America.
IPERSECUTION OF THE JEWS.
I PERSECUTION OF THE JEWS. The Chief Rabbi and the New Czar of Russia. Dr. Hermann Adler. the Chief Rahhi. has made n statement to a representative of Reuter's Agency with regard to a paragraph in a weekly review inquiring how he (Dr. Adler) oould recon- cile the fact of his presence at the ceremony of swearing allegiance to the Czar with his former views regarding the Russian treatment of the Jews. The Chh-f Rabbi said, "My views have not changed in the slightest degree. I regard the ill-treatment which my fellow religionists '1 0 suffered in Russia with unabated abhoirence. But it is neither charitable nor wise to assume that. the persecutions and the oppression which took place under the reign of Alexander III. will be permitted to continue under a new regime. All that- we know touching the cha- racter of his successor and the Em re ess, his Majesty s warm friendship for the ''rince of Wales, and the acts that have already sig- nalised his reign, encourage us in the anti- cipation that he will show clemency and ius-tice of all his subjects, irrespective of creed."

. HIS PA GETS MAD.
HIS PA GETS MAD. "I was down to the drug store this mom- ing, and saw yonx Ma buying a lot oi courb- pda^ter, enough to make a shirt, I should think. W hat s she going to do with, so mucil eourt-pla.ster t' asked the grocery man cf the bad bov. as he came in and pulled off his baots by the stove and emptied out a lot of snow that had collected as he walked through a drift, which melted and made a. bad smell. "Oil, I guess she is going to pat all Pa up so lie will noid water. Pa s temper got him in the worst imiss you ever see last night. If that museum was here now they would hire Pa and exhibit him as the tattooed man. I tell you, I have got too old to "be mauled as though I was a kid. and any* man. who attacks me from this out wants to na.ve his peace made with the insurance companies, and know that his calling and election is sure, because I am a bad man, aon't you forget it." And the boy pulled on his boots ana looked so cross and desperate that the grocery man asked him if he wouldn't trv a little new cider. "Good heavens said the grc<cery man, as the boy swallowed the uider, and his face resumed his natural look, and the piratical frown disappeared with the cider. "You havi not stabbed, vour father, have you'; I have feared that one thing would tcing on another with you, and that you vrouid, yet be hung. "Naw, I haven't fstabbed ium. It v. (ls another cat that stabbed him. You see, Pa wants me to do all the work around the house. The other day he bought a load of kinuimg wood, and told me to cariy it into the basement. I have not been educated up to kindling wood, and I didn't do it. When supper time came, and Pa found that I had not carried in the kindling wood, ne had a. hot box and he told me that If that wood was not in when he came back from the lodge, that he would warm my jacket. Well, I tried to hire someone to cany it in, and got a man to promise to come in the morning and carry it in and take his pav m groceries, and I was going t-o buy the groceries here and have them charged to Pa. But that wouldn't help me out that night. I knew when Pa came home he would search for me. So I slept- in the back hail on a cot. But I didn't want Pa to have all his trouble for nothing, so I borrowed a.n old torn oat that my chum's old maid aunt owns, and put the cat in my bed. I thought if Pa came in my room after me, and found that by his nn.kindness I had changed to a torn- cat, he would be sorry. That is the b-ggest cat you ever see, and the worst lighter in our ward. It isn't afraid of anything, and can whip a Newfoundland dog quicker than you can put sand in a barrel oi sugar. Weil, about eleven o'clock I heard Pa tumble over the kindling wood, and I knew bv the remark he made, as the wood slid around under him, that there was going to be a cat light real quick. He came up to Ma's room, and sounded Ma as to whether Hennery bad re- tired to his virtuous couch. Pa is awful sarcastic when he tries to be. I could hear lum take off his clothes, and hear turn say, as he picked up a trunk strap, 'I guess* I will go up to his room and Match the smile on his faxje, as he dreams of the angels. I yearn. to press him to my aching bosom.' I 1.nought to myself, maybe vou won't yearn so laucli directly. He come upstairs, and I could hear him breathing hard. I looked around the corner and could see he just had on his shirt and pants, and his suspenders were hanging- down, and his bald head shone like a. calcium light just before it explodes. Pa -wcut m mv room, and up to the bed. and 1. could hear him say, 'Come out here, and. bring in that kindling wood, or I will start) a tire on your base-burner with this strop.5 And then there was a yowling such as I never heard before, and Pa said, 'Helen Blazes,' and the furniture in my loom be-gaji to fall around and break. O'h. rr.y I think; Pa took the torn cat light by the neck, the way he does me, and that left all the cat's ieet fiee to get in their work. By the way,, the ui-t squalled as though it was being choked; I know Pa. had him by the neck. It suppose the cat thought Pa was a whole flock of Newfoundland dogs, and the cat had a record on dogs, and it kicked awful. Pa'a shirt was no protection at all in a. cat fight, and the cat iust walked all around lla's stomach, and "Pa veiled 'Police' and 'Fire,* and 'Turn on the hose,' and lie called Ma', and the cat yowled. If Pa had the presence of mind enough to have dropped the cat, or rolled it up in the mattress, it would have been all right, but a man always gets rattled in time of danger, and he held onto the cat and started down stairs yelling jiiuider, and me met Ma coming up. "I guess Ma's nightcap, or something, frightened the cat some more, 'cause he stabbed Ma on the night-shirt with one hind L foot, a.nd Ma said, 'Mercy on us,' and ,he went back, and Pa stumbled on a hand-sled that was on the stairs, and they all -fell down, and the oat got away, and went down in the coal bin and vowled all night. Pa and Ma went into their room, and I guess they annointed themselves with vaseline and Pond's extract, and I went and got into ay bed, 'cause it was cold out m the hail and the oat had warmed my bed as well as it bad warmed Pa. It was all I could do to go to sleep, with Pa and Ms talking all night, and tins morning I came dawn° the back stairs, and haven't been to breakfast, 'cause I don't want to see Pa when he is vexed. You let the man that carries in the kindling wood have six shillings worth of groceries, and charge them to Pa. I have passed the kindling wood period in a b;)y'. life. and have arrived at the coal period. I will carry in coal, but I draw the line at kindling wood." "Well. vou a.re a- cruel, bad boy," said the grocery man, as he went to the book and charged the six shillings. -6h, I don't know. I think Pa is cruel. A man who will take a poor kitty by the neck, that hasn't done any harm. and' tru-it to chastise the poor thing with a trunk stran. ought to be looked after bv the humane society. And if it is cruel to take a cat by the neck. how much more cruel is it to take a bov by the neck, that had diphtehia only a. few years azo, and whose throa.t is tender. Say. I guess I will accept your invitation to take breakfast with you.and the boy cut off a. piece of bologna and helped himself to the crackers, and while the grocery man wa« out shovelling off the snow from the side- walk. the bov filled his pockets with raism* and loaf sugar, and then went out to wa,t ;h the man carry in his kindling wood.
