LIBERAL. UNIONISTS. Oar London correspondent telejrr&phs:— Mr. Childers, who since the Home Rule sur- render in 1836 has fallen out of line with Glad- st-onians and has notfalien in with the Unionists, appears to hare terminated his prolonged spell of hesitancy. He ha.s been a frequent listener to the debates in Parliament, particularly during the Home Rule session, but has given no public intimation of his views till now. I say till now advisedly, because he was present at Mr. Courtney's meeting at Bodmin on Thursday night. Indeed, there was quite a rapproche- ment between the two Liberals. Mr. Childers istened approvingly to Mr. Courtney's Unionist views, and Mr. Courtney praised Mr. Childers' lo.st Budget, the one on which Mr. Gladstone rode for a fall in 1885. 1aI n

INSTITUTE OF JOURNALISTS. Forthcoming Banquet by the President- Elect. The executive committee of the South Wales District of the Institute of Journalists met at the Great Western Hotel, Cardie, on Friday to arrange for the banquet whieh Mr. David Duncan, of the "South Wales Daily News," the newly elected president, intends to give next Saturday to all past and present member« of the institute now resident in the district by way of inaugurating his year of office. The chair was occupied by Mr. W. J. Needle, and the secretary (Mr. E. Parker) informed the committee that Mr. Duncan desired to place the datails of the interesting event entirely under the control of the committee.' Accerding-ly, an ideal press gathering was arranged, with the mini- mum of speech-making' and the maximum of entertainment, tho musical portion of which will be in the hands cf Dr. Joseph Parry. The president-elect has expressed a strong desire that there should be a very large g-atboring- of pressmen on the occasion, and a. circular in con- sonance with this desire was ordered to be sent out. Some other business connected with the district was transacted, and other important matters deferred to the goi, oral, meetiug of the members of the district, which will be held on the afternoon of the 20th inst.

SOUTH WALES ART SOCIETY. Seme of the Pictures at the Winter Exhibition. [BY A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. [ The South Wales Art Society oxjeus its OOYf:-Eth -tanifUaiV esSiroitioii cf pictures this (Saturday) afternoon at the Public-hall, Queen-street, Cardiff, and from the private view with which. our representatives were oil Friday favoured we venture it) predict that the public will find in the exhibition very much of local, and general interest. The col- lection of paantiivgs is fully up to, if not over, the average, and the exhibition has this advantage over its predecessors, that the artificial illumination is on the most modern principle—no other than the prismatic electric system of Messrs. Fowler and Lancaster, of Bir- mingham. We believe we are correct in saying that this, the best and most perfect known substitute for sunlight, has never been applied in this ocimtry before, and had the matter lain with the oorjjoration it is safe to say the exhibition would not have benefited I bera, went straight to Lord Bute, obtained from his apparatus at the castle the requisite electric power, and got it switched on to the Queen-street hall, .with the result that to day's exhibition will be lit in such a manner as to tet at defiance the uncertain light of this most dismal of autumns. We have already spoken of the exhibition as thoroughly up to the average. It contains over 300 pictures, many of whieh axe deserving thoroughly up to the average. It contains over 300 pictures, many of whieh axe deserving of more eareiul notice than we are able to afford in our colurans to-day; but we hope for Knot-lies- opportunity of dealing' with those treasurer which to-day we are compelled to »pass ovor for want of space. Paintings by tha late Karl Muller were the centre of attraction at the last show., and this year (thanks again to the Mar- quess of Bute) a picture by that great artist graces the exhibition. It is Xo. 40. in the catalogue, and is called "Holy Night," and may be described as a sublime conception exquisitely worked out. The Virgin Mother gazes down in rapt adoration on her Babe, and Joseph and others stand around, all, like the Virgin, illumined by the wonderful light I that radiates from the Infant Saviour. Having gazed long at this masterpiece, we move ruund the room and select here and there a notable picture for attention. No. 95, "The Children's Prayer" (Arthur Hacker), is a powerful picture, well grouped. The subject is a beautiful one, the tone quiet, and the fiesh painting exquisite. Hagarty's "Cottage Homes of England" (98), though weak in conception, is in the artist's usual style. The autumn tints are pretty, but there is something wanting in their arrangement. "Evening at Fakouss Egypt" (R. T. Kelly—96), is a grand picture, full of subdued tones and quiet har- monies. "Cattle on Harlech Btiich" (90), by Henry Moore, is an aigrecable laaidsoape of monotonous scenery and rolling cloud, whilst in the foreground are I30we black cattle. In 77, Lamco Calkin's "Land of Nod," we have a charming, but difficult, subject, the kitten, in especial being very true to the life. "A Cinderella' (Alia Edwards—66) strikes the eye a-s a power- ful and well pointed study: it will have many admirers. "The School of Art, Cardiff" (2), is characteristic of Mr. Edgar Thomas, and, at the same time, something to marvel at. His crude, palette of mainly black and white is not calculated to win the applause of the general public; but, nevertheless, there is a something in Mr. Thomas's painting whioli appeals to the artist, and promises in the future the attain- ment of a standard of excellence which many now popular painters will never reach. No. 115, "After Glow" (Garrido), is a sublime study, but one it is doubtful the public will appreciate-; the same remark applies to No. 182, 'Nymphs," by the same artist The inte.rest of a most in- teresting exhibition will be found to centre largely in No.241,Hul>ertHerkomer's magnificent portrait of Archibald Forbee. No one can gaze on this grand study of the grizzled war correspondent without feeling the power that haunts the conception: it must be seen to be pxLmirtd, and the specta--i-oi will return to it again and again with feelings of sinceirest plea- sure. Walter Cook's "July Evening" (265) is a clever study, with a good sky: Ihe whole does credit to its artist, a local gentleman. In "A Moving Story" (Srunt-56) we have a very sweet subject painted in the composer's most agreeable tints. Those who love the human form divine will be eiharr-med with Luis Falero's "He loves me, he loves me not." This gJow- ing maiden 11,108 a lovely facs; but the whole is somewhat lacking in technique. Nevertheless, the general cifect of the study is very delicious. Walden's "Moonrise" (39) is a. charming sea- scape, quiet in tone and subdued in colour. It is, perhaps, to be preferred to a similar sub- ject, No."262, "The Last of the SlID," by the same artist, which is also a clever and delightful study of waves on tb"j seashore. No. 62. by Edgar .Thomas, although but a rough sketch, is an interesting portrait of the irtipt, Mr. Hall Neale. in his interpretation cf a lady amongst poppies is very happy: lie has produced a ffimt agreeable, little pioture, both in brightness of oolour and in technique. Ita/burci's "Just a Song at Twilight" is a- superb study in brown— it is No., 36 in the catalogue. Mr. S. M. Broad lias several very interesting studies in tlie exhibition, one of the most noteworthy and charming of which i" "A Pembrokeshire Mcoo- land" (80). Miss Gw^nny Griffiths's portrait of Archdeacon Griffiths (71) is a fair likeness and a verv creditable production. The young lidv is a. daughter of the well-known Swansea physician. Other noteworthy pictures which we pan only mention, are "On the Wye" (IT. W. B. Daviffl-20B). pastel ixirtrait of Miss Jeesie Rovds (Miss GweDny Griffiths—188). "Mistv jHkt ^rthirs^ar « 'K: Shennanl-225), and "Sa.ppho" (G.' H. Edwards —165). LECTURE ON "ANCIENT PAINTING." We notice that at eight o'clock this (Saturday), evening a lecture will be delivered at the University College, Cardiff, by Dr. Percy Glndner, professor of archaeology at Oxford, on "Ancient Painting." Professor Gardner, it. may be recollected, lectured to a large audience three years ago at the college on "Greek Athletics," and all who were present were delighted with the lucid style and the interesting matter of his discourse. It is hoped that many will find themselves able to attend this lecture, though they may not have the time to follow a course by Professor Richards on Classical Va.se Paintings," to which it is intended to be introductory. A lecture on this subject appro- priately falls on the evening of the day on which the annual exhibition of modern paintings is opened in the town.

The New Idolafevry, LATTER DAY RELIGION OF THE MASSES. A New Code of Commandments of,, Footballers and Their Followers. In casting about for some subject on whiclfc to let loose the fierce limelight of my philo-y sophy I vacantly gazed through the window of my saiicturn-sajictorun), when suddenly there burst upon my vision a. contingent of the "Cardiff Terrors," who, dressed in the scanty attire of footballers, were proceeding-' to a. little, unev-an space of uncultivated' ground in one of the outlying districts ofi the Welsh Metropolis, to "try conclusions;"1 as the football reporter would express it, with! the "Splotland Junketers," whom they (tlt& Cardiff Terrors) had frequently intimated; their intention of "wiping off the face of tlie earth." "Ob, oh," thought I, "here is ei subject at last." And I fell to moralising j upon the new religion of the masses—the Religion of the Leather. Then an echo of tibt sonorous accents of "Cynddvlan" came float- i ing down through the corridors of my memory, and methouigHo 1 heard him onof more thump the pulpit emphatically, and ex-i claim with vigorous denuncia.tion, "Engage the finest preacher in the land, and let him deliver a. sermon in the Park-hall, Cardiff, and the audience will hardly occupy hundred seats but advertise a. football match at the Cardiff Arms 1'ark, and' you will get, 10,000 people together to witness the torn- foolery." Yes, friends, there is no mirt.aking: it, the new religion—or, shall I say, rather, th( new idolatry ?—is Football. To the ordinary Cardiffial11 what are the incidents of the Chino- Japanese war to compare with the fortunes of Cardiff in. their periodical struggles with Newport? Would a fresli speech by Mr. Gladstone on the political situation have half the charms for the ordinary mall in the street as the utterances of a high-priest of; the leather who was acquainted with all the secrets cf the Rugby Football Union and could discourse learnedly on the comparative^ A. -11 merits of the Welsh internationals? A sub-, stantial fo-rtu-ae ought- to be awaiting the man who cculd write a. new Koran to the glori- fication of The Leather; and might I also suggest to the speculative builder the erection. of a temple—oval in shape for preference— where prayers might be offered up for fine weather on Saturdays, where sermons might be .preached on the. ethics of football, and hymns, specially composed by football re- porters, be sung in its praise? Let me be the first contributor to the literature of the new idolatry. I have drawn out a set otj- commandments for footballers and their fob lowers, which might be made a part of the ordinary services of the new Temple of the So heroic!: — come down severely u-on the mdiviaual who., says nasty things of the new idol of the mul- titude. 2. Keep Saturday to sanctify it in a-acordfcj ance with the fixtures of the different foals* bfill teams. 3. For the first five days of the week tho*v mayest attend to tile ordinary labour by; means of which thou livest. 4. But the sixth—or tfie Saiur—day is the; day of thy Tanyard God. In it thou shaki throw up all manner of sordid work, thou, ana thy son, and thy daughter, and thy man-servant, and any male or female, visiting or permanently resident within thy gat#3._ 5. Honour the captain of thy favourite football team, and fern up regularly at foot- ban matches, no matter how inclement the weather may be, for ther.e is an old saying, "Whom, the gods love die early," ard, if: on some wet and cokl day, thou gatherest up the germs of a galloping consumption so much the better, for thon wilt most assuredly die early and, the gods will love thee. 6.
