.s THE SECOND REFORM MEETING. Radicals of this borough-the designation is j1(4i 1ely strong enough to indicate the character of their cOa charitably refrain from giving them any Ii, tJ"er name—are neither very candid nor very truthful, advertisements wherein they announce their public 'W "K"- The other day, for instance, it was placarded lbere was t° be a public meeting to 'consider' the K,st,ion of reform. Of course it turned out that the 'er'ig was not called for anything of the sort, but to (i,; u.r some latent political end; and so far from the s.'l°n of reform being 'considered,' there was not a A|i .e of what could properly be called discussion, but t,i(lthe speeclic' like a Bridgnorth election, were on one Sjj. and it was manifest, from the temper of the 'o P rs an<l the audience, that any one who had ventured cift- opinion at all running counter to the radical of the evening', would have been vehemently "k>p by preconcerted disturbance, if not subjected to 6 *^kward violence. So much, then, for the first meeting, and the disparity between its pretended tipp .re«l character. Since then we have had another is«, lrnen, equally rich, of radical disingenuousness. On tK(,'rday there were large posters distributed, announcing t(, 8 'neeting of working men would be held on Monday Coh^D8'der the various schemes of reform now before the nijJjfry, and the means by which the working *tiv ecure a share in making the laws, rne buls, to would have been much more truthful if they vvui run this wise;—'On Monday evening next there \y a public meeting at the Market. w »e Williams, of the TeUgraph, and two orthrce rtfT*< Will vent their malignity on hZQld-' On this occasion of Monday, Mr W P. Wil O Was '"stalled as ohairman; and it isi with Jw p to >r'ce in that position that I have, fepeciany, and brieflj hr I Iiavp alwavs regarded it as the duty ot tQ MHud8r,t of a public meeting, that he should imparfay StJJ, i,8 outset the object, and call the several anrt opfrs've speakers without any interlocutory remarks own. This, however, was not Mr Williams s idea office. He has evidently read Pendennis, and l>nr le<* the character of Captain Costigan to vivi ?8e* The gallant captain when he attended a con- Itie ^1 meeting made a point of having a clear halt ot Wa(.sPeaking to himself. Whatever the toast proposed of JT^^ethcr the Army and Navy, the Bishop and Clergy C0,t; Diocese—in fact, it did'nt matter what, Captain felt himself constrained to reply to it. It was «Vp„.of this- nature that Mr Williams enacted on Monday *c«rn,IiR" mrtde a long speech at the outset, one <JogJ *y less lengthy after the first speaker, repeated tne **88 ».• r the second speaker, ditto after the thiri, and it tl\e *xth oration number four that Mr Williams closed *v6tii °ceedings. He was up and down, in fact, all the droureminding one of nothing so much as that won- ^ver Piece of mechanism, i'unch and Judy, « here Punch t?0^ ftnc^ then enters, and Judy retreats, and vtce ^'i\s n hrovigiiout the proceedings. But Monday evening heen ?t the first of Mr Williams's performances. He has st;ir the late political movements in this "Sitnr °urh°0d; the Alpha and the Omega of all the he '°n. In his power of political transformation he is tOf, Proteus—here, there, and everywhere, at the 'Wvn bottom of everything. True, he sometimes en- ^l*ra conceal his authorship of these moments, but "Hiiup unsuccessfully; whatever radical puppets are 'l|<* ° Played, vou discover, for there is no mistaking it, a*UrJ familiar hand jerking the strings. Like tne V/dntP,? b:key Free, he is always at hand when he is *'th a,l(1 discharges the part of universal factotum v??81 exemplary energy. Nav, I am not sure that In verSa, Vet>' of his offices Mr Williams does not rival that ac,<)1' who was able to play Iago, paint the wh e 8tt,Vs a,'range the scenes, and finally lace Desdemona Maye'ri a word, whatever political cards aie ei g Vt Williams is sure to turn up trumps. I have ^ho ;r.jaP't:>l story somewhere of one Maurice Ma o■ "law u*8ed in ruin to such an extent that a corp .ia ''Htr, always in attendance when he diued out o t i'iiarJ.1™! hotne to the barracks. It ^Pafh fortunate thing ^r Mr Williams, I say it in all Pathy and sincerity, that he should ever have dis- played the cacocthe* lotjuendi. The Radicals have observed if and are the verv men to turn it to account. Ixion like, their victim will he doomed to revolve on his own wheel of passion. He was smitten with apoplexy so thatbe was not able to speak one word before his death; but we are very confident that he had prepared both temporally and spiritually during the season of healh for the solemn event. His loss will be deeply felt in the family, the neighbourhood, as well as in the Church to which he belonged. The poor especially have sustained a great loss in more than one respect. As a guardian he always pleaded the cause of the poor, and that generallv with success. In Mr Griffith's life « has been given that a man may make the best of both worlds.'
