LOCAL I'LNANUE.I
LOCAL I'LNANUE. I [BY ou FINANCIAL EDITOR.] CARDIFF, WEDXKSDAY. The markets to-day have been fairly active, anu jjenerjiUy prices lla'1' moved upwards. In rails, perhaps, taking the hctvy lines, there bo" beeu a slight weakness, but Barry's have been done at 26—the top quotation. Tatfs are rather weak, but Rhomldas and ale of Ulamor- gaus maintained tiieir position. One particu- lar feature 111 this market is the advance in pitferential and debenture stock, those of the UambriaJi, Alexandra, and Midland making a distinct advance. It \vaa only a few days ago that we notified an improvement in the prices obtainable for Cardiff and Newport Gas Stocks. Possibly shareholders and the ouuide public who had an incJillatlOn to invest in securities of this class were deterred by the introduction of the electric light. Whatever that illuminact may prove to be in the future, the experience at Cardiff appears to have sent up gas stocks to a point which they have never before reached. Cardiff 4,A" Ten per Cent Stock is now worth 209, and, at this figure there is none to be obtained. The market prove" that if tJw works had been purchased by the l'Orpol"dotion four years ago at the price agreed upon between a sub-committee and the company, the ratepayers would have reaped a substantial advantage- Electric lighting is apparently necessary, but in a town like Cardiff the gas company have nothing to fear from it. Bank of Wales shares li?o been a fairly good market during the last week, the pri' j varying from 2s. 6d. to 3s. per £10 paid, with 1 tho liability of an equal amount. Many in- quiries have bœu made with reference to the time by which the liquidators will be able to Pr4e?ent a statement to tho shareholde,? of this unfortunate company. After making inquiries we find that those who are interested in the winding up of the company are doing their level best for the benefit of the shareholders, but it is not likely that any balance-sheet can be presented for at least six months. In Colliery Shares South Wales ''B'e," whioh yield a dividend of 10 per cent., have advanced J, and Ehbw Vales are in fairly strou demand, with a prospect f ri?.. wil \hœIi.t('I\an department Barry Graving Dock Shares have improved, and at the present quotation are worth consideration Windsors are fairly strong on the purchase by Mordey. Carney, and Co., but investors are not inclined to go beyond 13!, One of the principal features in this market ia the sudden rise in the ordinary shares or the Cardiff Milling Company (Limited) (late James Tucker, Limited). These shares, which about a fort- night ago were transferred at 1, were to-day dealt in at 2 9-16, and it is probable that a further improvement will take place. When the grain was at its worst, the oompanv were able to make a profit out of their milis, and now the prices have improves they are likely to recoup themselves to some extent for the losses which they sustained during the last two or three years. The extent to which even a small rise in the value of grain may effect a company of this description will be appreciated when we state that only last week one cargo on its arrival at Cardiff wa. worth £4,000 more than when it was despatched. The changes which have taken place in the quotations to-day are as follow:—Rise Cam- brian No. 1 Four ner Cent. Tredegar Irons have been in demand, and business has taken place at prices from 5 to 51., Barry Ordinary has improved on the announcement that there is to be a new issue of preference stock to be allotted to ordinary stockholders. The. market leaves off firm at,234-5. Rhymney has also been an active market, and h'a' improved to 208-10, with a large number of transactions recorded between these figures. The announce- ment that the directors have embodied in their Bill notice of their intention to apply for powers to split the ordinary stock into preferred and deferred was made late lasfc evening, alld ae yet it does not seem to be generally known. DIVORCE DECREEI RESCINDED.
DIVORCE DECREE I RESCINDED. In the Divaroe Division on Wednesday the )resident gave his decision in the case of rhurehward v. Churchward. This wae a case in which Air. John S. Churchward, an accoun- tant, had obtained a decree nisi for the disso- lution of his marriage, and the Queen's Proctor intervened, alleging that there had been collu- sion, because the parties had come to an agree- ment where b y the wife, out of her separate estate, 'f¡ provide for the oPi:=af the child of the marriage, in consideration of the husband prosecuting his suit for a. divorce. —It was contended that there had been no col- lusion, as the facte were not concealed from the court, and petitioner had a legitimate claim for divorce, and there wM no attempt to de, ceive the c..rt.-Sir Francis eame to the con- clusion that, as the initiation of the suit Was procured, and its result a.? to cots and daages proe ?7d?y agreement, tnat mmt be held to be collusion. The Queen's Proctor, therefore, suc- ceeded, and the decree nisi v" ld be rescinded. There was no order as to cooc-a.

IINVENTORS' -PRIZE COMPETITION.…
INVENTORS' PRIZE COMPE- TITION. CASH PRIZES. I The large number of applications for parti- culars of our Invention Com ¡tion tht have come in points to the r.1 fact th.t the competition b? excited the interest of a g..t mallY rMrlers, W. are g-tifl"d tbat the idX ? '-n so readily taken up, and -t "P%t' the pl1I1'9 of &misting to br;ng f.??d a few good novelties later on. There is one point, and a rather important one, tb&t we would like to im press on com- petitors—Do not, in striving after originid't lose sight of accepted PrineiPl- -d t,g; prejudices. I,- lih. most ?u"sdul inventions are no* neoeesarily those exhibiting great orlgnlity- they are, more often than not, improvements on existing appliances. A trifling improvement in the form or mechanism of siome commonplace artiole, rendering it more convenient or effective, and not involving any great change in the manu faoture of the artiole, is more likely to con- stitute a successful patent, pecuniarily, than invention which necessitates the special training of artificers to make it for the market. Trade prejudice must also be taken into awount. A manufacturer is often slow to recognise the merits of an invention that threatens to upl"'t a section of his trade, anrl the difficulty that an inventor usually ex, periences in getting even a mode! properly- made can be attributed only to the reluctance of manufacturers to embark on new pru- oaspes—unless thev are directly interested. Improvements on the other hand arc cnucii more readily taken up. The changes in forma of tools, prooesBes, Ac., are generally but slight, and the improvement in the article will at once enhance the trade of the maker who initiates it. It is, therefore, the improve- ment form of invention that the inventor should first turn his attention to. As a striking example of a suooeesful inven- tion of this nature, we may point to the gi.lot end of the common wmw, ? very -,npl. thing, almost trivial as an invention, yet it is the source from which an eminent living statesman derives his princely income. Again, the rubber tip wt the end of a lead pencil is proverbial alm08t ae a profitable inventioo-it was worth oertainlv over £ 20.000. In view of the large oroSts that oan be made from simple inventions, we have deoided to stimulate the inventive faculty in our readers by offering CASH PRIZES for the best inventiom in given subjects. It must be thoroughly understood at the outset that we are seeking no direot gain through this Com, petition for ourselves. The inventions will remain at all times the sole nroperty of the inventors, aud we shall, in addition to the prizes we are offering, assist by every means that lies in our power to bring good inven- tioTUI to a. successful issue commercially. We shall consider ourselves amply repaid if this Competition is instrumental in plaoing on the market poood ideu, to the benefit of the originators as well as of the general public. We offer a FIRST PRIZE OF £ 10 IN CASH For the best invention ot some axiioie pra- taining to the desk or writing table such u pens, penoils, inkwells, pen wiper-, rulers paper cutters, erasers, paper weights, Not- ting pads, slopes, desks, or any other ap- plianoe tht can be used on the offiee desk or hmne writing-table. We offer I STTOOND PRIZE OF JE5 IN CASH For the best invention for some culinary artiole, that is, an article used in the prepara- tion or cooking of food, such as saucepans, frving pans, kettles, stewpans. gridirons, pots and rans, egg beaters and boilw. nins. cutting boards. po$*TY-m-k ing, boards, ?!M. m-. knives or forks or -Y art'°> whatever wrt?ninfr to the k'tchm and ??"?*<t in the course of ??oMn? op<-rahont. or pre- teri!W food for -kinz. It will be observed that in the widr. raolfe of subjects quoted above there is ample .eope for the inventive efforts of our ladv readers as well a1' those of the sterner sex. Recent statistics show that women are I"1T>ic!lv coming to the front. inventors, especially in con- nection with matters of feminine intemt, and we desire to give all chance of com- peting We will in draw attention to the important fact "that all inventions will remain the exclusive property of the respective com- petitors. and that, although onlv three com- oet.itor« can be priae-winners. we shall use everv effort to bring forward inventions of merit, whether they boo the actual prize- winners or not All inventions must be new, and not pro- tec* patented before the date of this issu* uid. in order to safearuard the pro- prietary righta of the Inventors, all inventions must ho protected or patented before being "lijrihle for competition. With a view to a.I-ting competitors so far a* we can, we have arranged specif' terms whereby the necessary protection or patent may be obtained at conRiderablv reduced charges.
