AMMANFORD
AMMANFORD SUCCESS.—Among the successful students at the recent examination held at St. David's College, Lampeter, we observe the names of Mr D. Fisher, Glyntai, and Mr Ivor J. Jones. The former gradu- ated in Ordinary Theology, and the latter passed Ordinary Moderations. We congratulate them on their success, and we doubt not but that a career of usefulness is in store for them. MARRIAGE.-Last Thursday morning, at the Llande- bie Parish Church, Mr Edward Jones, son of Mr J. Jones, Manager of Bettws Colliery, and Miss Jones, Glasfan House, Ammanford, Jwere joined together in the bonds of holy matrimony. We sincerely hope that the sun which shone so brightly on their wedding day will continue its lustre and envelope each day of their existence. LOCAL INDUSTRY.—The Ammanford colliery companyy have sent some of their coal to St. Pancra, London, to work s^rne boilers driving electric lihL Mr John Evans, one of their firemen. who has had considerable experience in burning anthracite coal, was sent up to show the Londoners how to burnt it. The result has been most successcul, and this ought to be a beginning of a big business to the colliery. The success is a good deal due to the foresight of Mr H. Herbert, the local director, in choosing such an experienced man as Mr J. Evans to go up to make the trial. We all know what trouble it is to get an Englishman to burn stone coals. The coal now being worked at Ammanford colliery is of excellent quality as is shown by the number of orders that have been repeated.
ST. CLEARS.
ST. CLEARS. MI.-iO,UEST.-On Friday last, Mr Thos. Walters, coroner, held an inquest at the Mason's Arms, Llantihangel Abercowin, on the body of Martha Brittania Williams, infant daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Williams, who died on the previous day. The mother, in her evidence, said the child was 17 months old. About 11 a.m., on the 29th ult., the little girl took hold of a saucepan that was on the fire. It fell off and she was scalded by the hot water on the face and shoulders. She put oil and wadding on the parts, but the child became worse and a doctor was sent for. She was in the room when the accident happened. The child was not insured.—Dr. Harries, St. Clears, said the child was dying when he visited her. He afterwards examined the body and found that the right half of the scalp, the right cheek and the right shoulder down to the elbow joint were scalded, as also was the left arm which was blistered. The child was properly treated.— The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
TENBOYR.
TENBOYR. SUNDAY SCHOOL TRIP.-On Saturday last, the 2nd inst., the two Church schools of Penboyr went for a trip to Tresaith. Tho weather in the early morning was rather dull and inclined to rain, but by the time the start was to take place it cleared. Starting from Velindre about 7.30 a.m in convey- ances, numbering in all about thirty-two, contain- ing 280 people, and headed by the renowned Llys- newydd brass band, tiie river Tivy was soon left behind. After travelling for miles through a fine country the place of destination was ultimately reached. On arriving there all sat down on the grass just above the sea, and had some luncheon. Having taken care of the inner man, all made for the sea shore where all sorts of games were in. dulged in, the most amusing of which was the game of Refusing," in which some of the young people -were conspicuous for refusing and being refused, and the jumping of the old men who seemed to be able to lift their legs exceptionally high. Between 3 or 4 o'clock, the gong having sounded all made for the bank, where tea and plenty of cake were prepared, which all could not less than enjoy. After tea sweets were given to the children. Between 5 and G p.m. a general move homewards was made, taking a different route to that in coming, and after a most enjoyable drive home was at last reached. Great praise is due to those who had the management of the affair as everything passed off so nicely and to the satisfaction of all.
CONWIL CAIO.
CONWIL CAIO. THE ANNELL AMATEUR ORCHESTRAL BAND.— We are very pleased to notice the warm en- couragement the band is receiving from all, especially the gentry. This week we thankfully acknowledge 1:1 towards the above, from Mr Davi?s, of Froodvale, and 10s from A Friend The band hopes to be fully equipped with instru- ments by the end of next week. We ought to add that Mr D tvies, of Froodvale, kindly pro- mised to subscribe more if necessary. THE COMIX*: ELEcrio.N.On Tuesday, at Crugybar, a meeting was held by Mr Abel Thomas and Mr W. Howell, and a few sup- porters. The attendance was sparse and devoid of much enthusiasm. The speeches were of the usual description—empty promises, misrepre- sentations, and unproven assertions. We hope the electors of East Carmarthen, particularly those of Caio and Crugybar, will show 011 the .Y election day that they are alive to their best interests and those of our fellow Protestants in Ireland by recording their votes for the Unionist candidate, Captain Thomas Davies, who is the supporter of a Government of good deeds and not of false promises such as we have experienced the Gladstonian Government to be in the past.
BETTWS, (AMMANFORD).
BETTWS, (AMMANFORD). A most successful sheep dog trial took place on Bettws Mountain on Monday last. The judges were Messrs Edward Harries, Cwnjdulais; John Miles, Tylacoch, and Charles Price, Tyndomen. In the champion class a fine dog from Llwyn- gwenol, Velindre, won the prize of two guineas, penning his sheep in the marvellous time of four minutes. Mr Edward Hopkin, of Alltycadno, took the second prize, and Mr Llewellyn Jones, of Blaenantddu, took the third prize. In the class open to the parish of Bettws only Mr Jonathan Morgan, of Bodist, carried off the first prize of 21-twelveldocs competed in this class and sixteen in the champion class. There was a very large attendance, amongst those present were noticed: Mr Councillor Jones, Mr William Phillips, Parcyrhun, and the Mayor of Bettws. The whole of the arrangements reflect caedit on the committee of whom Mr D. George was chairman, Mr Morgan Morris, secretary, and Mr Thomas Bevan, BryneyfTon, treasurer. We hope this interesting affair will become an annual one.
LLANBOIDY.
LLANBOIDY. INQUEST. —On Saturday, Mr T. Walters, coroner, held an inquest on die body of David Phillips, Llain, near Login, labourer. From the evidence it appears that deceased was lately in delicate health and had been attended to by Dr. Jones, Llanboidy. He left home about 10 a.m., on the 1st inst., and was last seen alive by Martha Davies, widow, Login, about 3.30 p.m. He was then making his way towards home, but was found about ten minutes later by Henry Gibbon, farmer, Waunffrwd, on the roadside between Cwmmiles and Ffynonwen, quite dead, with blood oozing out of the troutli.-Dr. I Williams, Whitland, was of opinion that the deceased died from hoemorrhage of the lungs, and a verdict according to the doctor's testimony was returned. 11 y
