Correspoqdeqce. i Boy Scouts and Handicrafts. To the Editor. "vr. I inn very anxious (1) to extend the development of handicrafts among the Scouts in all parts of the country and (2) to push forward the organisation in the densely populated industrial centres of the northern Midlands, where a. heal lay moral and physical training is so badly needed for the boys of uie poorer classes. To this end we are arranging to hold a national assemblage, of Scouts at Birming- ham next summer. This will include a hip; rally, an exhibition of handicrafts, and demonstrations of Sea Scouting and other Scout work. His Royal Highness Prince Arthur of Connaught has consented to review the Scouts at the rally, Lord Charles Beres- ford will review the Sea Scouts, and I have asked His Serene Highness Prince Alexander of Teck to open the exhibition during the first week in July, 1913. Our two previous great rallies, at the Crystal Palace and at Windsor, were iI1 each case a grand success, and I have every hope that with our improved organ- isation the proposed one will be equally great. Much depends on Scoutmasters giving the incentive to their Scouts in good time so that articles for exhibition can be pre- pared durine; the winter months, and money can be saved up for the expenses of the trip to Birmingham. It is for this reason that I venture to ask the kind help of Commissioners and other officers of the movement in promot- ing interest in the idea among Scout- masters and Scouts in all parts of the Empire. Full particulars will be published in the Headquarters Gazette, or can be ob- tained from the Exhibition Secretary, Mr. Basil Walker, Lawnside, Edgbaston. I feel confident that if all co-operate in this way a grand success awaits us. ROBERT BADEN-POWELL. Boy Scouts, Victoria Street, London, S.W., Nov., 1912.

State Medical Service for South Wales. Rhondda Labour Party's Rasolutlon. At a meeting of the Rhondda Labour Party. held at Tonypandy on Thursday evening, Mr. T. C. Morris, A.S.R.S.. pre- siding, the following resolution was passed:—"That this meeting of the Rhoindda Labour Party, representing 20.000 Trade Unionists in the Rhondda Valleys, calls upon the Government to establish forthwith a State medical ser- vice and also requests the Insurance Commissioners for Wales to draft a pro- visiona l scheme suitable for the indus- trial, population of the South Wales coal- field at the earliest possible moment." It was further decocted to urge all the- Labour organisations- in South Wales to pass similar resolutions, and to have the same forwarded to the Welsh Commis- sioners without delay.
South Wales Markets.
South Wales Markets. At time of writing General Markets are experiencing one of those, intermittent waves of optimism which have marked the checkered prospects of an early settle- ment of the Near Eastern imbroglio, and certainly the outlook in this respect is more promising just now than at any time during the past two or three weeks. The upward movement of prices em- braces practically all sections, but the premier place is taken by Home Railway Stocks, which have developed a buoyant tendency. Great Westerns, a leader in the market, are quoted at 118f to 119 to-day (Monday). There has been active business in South" Eastern Deferred and Chathams, which have riseil to 67 and 22 £ respectively on Kent coal prospects. There will probably be a further substantial rise in these two stocks, as soon as the com- mercial status of this prospective coalfield is assured. Perhaps the most interesting and at- tractive of our Home Railway securities are the Preferred and Deferred Ordinary Stacks of the Great Central Railway, and substantial gains have taken place in the prices of these., In view, however, of the excellent progress this railway is making, and of the fact that the Preferred Ordi- nary is now within sigTit of a dividend, much higher prices are likely for both these stocks, and the Prefered at 33 to 33i, and the Deferred at ISA, are regarded as among the most hopeful speculative lock-ups to be obtained to-day. In Local Rails. Barry Defetred is strong at 84 to 85. With a probable 5 per cent. and possibly 6 per cent, dividend in sight, at which the yield would be about 6J per cent. and 71, per cent. respectively l it is obvious that there is a further rise of at least 10 points possible; and in view of the satisfactory outlook for 1913 and on, it would surprise no one who has studied the position, to see Barry Deferred again at par in the near future.

I Golt Notes. I By "THE CADDIE."] The Leonard Llewelyn Challenge Cup competition has reached its final stage. Last week. Willie Llewellyn beat Dr. Gabe Jones, and William Lewis beat Sam Jones. We have, therefore, the same two Willie Llewellyn and WillIam Lewis-ap- I pearing in the final as we had in the Orawshay-Bailey Bowl competition. I In that. competition, William Lewis I won. Now it is our secretary's turn to win, and he will if he keeps up his pre- sent form. Dr. Gabe Jones will have cause to remember his defeat 011 Friday in the semi-final. To be 8 down on the turn is a. very severe defeat. The final will be played on Saturday, and will, no doubt, attract a great crow v.. the Rhondda Teachers received an- other defeat from the hands of the Ponty- pridd Teachers on Saturday. They, how- ever, made a better show than 011 the last. occasion they met at Pontypridd. Pontypridd this time secured six games, the Rhondda three. The result was as follows: Rhondda.—G. H. —— -'L III Child Soalded to Daath at Tonypandy. On Tuesday an inquest was held by the coroner. Mr. R. J. Rhys, on Trevor Price, aged one year and nine months, the child of Thomas Hellier, a rider, of Gilfach Road, Tonypandy. The evidence showed that 011 the 21st of November the, child while playing ran against his mother when the latter was carrying a kettle! of boiling water. some of the water falling over the child's face, shoulders, and chest. Medical evidence was that death, which occurred on November 30th, was due to shock. The jury returned a verdict of Acci- dental scalding."
Deeds Not Words.I
Deeds Not Words. Promises, says the sage, are like pie- crusts—made to be broken. All the pro- mises that you can be cured by this or that medicine are empty compared with the simple truth that one of our neigh- bours, Mrs. Miles, of Tonypandy, has been cured—and not only cured, but has remained cured. w Over two years ago, Mrs. M. Miles, of 22, Eleanor Street" near the Ebenezer Chapel, Tonypandy, said:—"I was troubled very much some months ago with very severe pains in my back and all over my body. I could hardly bend at my work. I had swellings in my feet also the water was not, right, showing I had kidney complaint. I had attacks of dizziness, and headaches prevented my getting proper rest at night. I was advised to try Doan's Backache Kidney Pills. I got a box. and I am glad to say I had benefit from them after taking a second box. I became free from the pains, and my back was better than it had been for a long time. I shall always speak well of Doan's Backache Kidney Pills, for I have faith in them for kidney complaint. (Signed) Mary Miles." Over two years later, Mrs. Miles says: I confirm what I said previously about Doan's Backache Kidney Pills. I still think them a splendid medicine, and have no hesitation in recommending others to take them. I still enjoy good health and I have had no return of the trouble since Doan's Pills cured me." I* Cwmparc-
Cwmparc- It is with deep regret we record the death of Mrs. J. Owen. Tallis Street, at the age of 58. Deceased was seized with sudden illness some time ago. and her complaint necesitated an. operation, which, was performed by Drs. Armstrong and- Barrett last Monday week. Mrs. Owen seemed to make progress for a time, but the end came on Sunday afternoon last. Mrs. Owen was held in the mghest esteem locally, and was one of the most valuable members of the church at Park (O.M.). We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved husband and children, among the latter being Mr. Dan Owen (Park Schools) and Miss Hannah Owen, con- ductress of the Cwmparc Juvenile Choir. We regret to note that Mrs. Barrett, wife of our genial medico, Dr. Barrett, has latterly been in an unsatisfactory state of health, and is this week under- goince a serious operation at a private nursing home in Cardiff. We sincerely wish her a very speedy recovery. The return billiard match between the Fernhill and Cwmparc Institutes (under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A.) took place at Cwmparc on Wednesday last, and was witnessed by a big crowd. The homesters won by 2i points, proving victorious in four games out of eight. Ben Morgan (capt.), E. O. Davies, W. T. Rees and T. W. F. Williams were the best cueists for the winning side. Mr. Claridge and Mr. Husbands (Fernhill). for" Treherbert, proved "hot stuff" against Messrs. Morris George and Urias Thomas. The visitors were entertained to a high tea at the close.
