Death of one of Pontygwaith'e Oldest Tradesmen. Mr. Wm. Reynolds, ironniongei- Ponty- gwaith, oijp of the oldest and most re- speeted tradespeople- of the locality, died rather suddenly after a few days' illness on WedDesday, 20th ult., having nearly reached the promised 70 years. He was I well known as a man of deep religious principles, and was always kind to the poor and needy, who will miss him greatly. Having identified himself for some years with the Wesleyan Methodists, he fitted up a. mission room for their church in Llewellyn Street, and became one of its most ardent workers. filling the impor- tant office of steward. His sympathy with the foreign mission was profound, for he collected and stibscribed L20 to- j wards it in about a year before his death. The funeral took place on Monday, the 2oth ult.. and in spite of the inclement weather, a very large number met to pay their tribute of respect to the departed. As the cortege was leaving the house, the children of the mission sang Safe in the arms of Jesus." The burial service at Treorchy Cemetery was conducted by the Revs. S. R. Wilkins. Ferndale; E. W. (Edwards, Tumble, Carm.; and Jones (curate), Pontygwaith. The Revs. W. Williams. J. Evans (Soar), and T. Evans (Bethany) also attended. The principal mourners were: -Nlessr, W. T. and J. I)eceas(-(I, who was educated for the medical profession» commenced his career at Stokes Croft. Bristol, as chemist but later was associated with the celebrated j Sir Isambard Brunei the constructor of the Thames Tunnel, while the Great Wes- tern Railway from London to Bristol wits j in course of lorniutioti. He afterwards joined the staff of the, Birmingham Wagon Company, and retired from active service some 15 years since. During the past few j t years he has been residing with his daughter, who managed Mr. W. D. Jones' branch book shop At Llewellyn Street, j Pentre, and was well known and highly respected in tlie, locality for his urbane, and courteous demeanour to all, and his conversation was greatly appreciated by those who had the opportunity of hearing his graphic description of events which t had come to his notice during his loaig and eventful life. IJis knowledge of the literature of the Victorian era was most extensive, and he hjjxl come in close con- j tact with Charles Dickens and many other notabilities of that, long and eventful reign. f; •
