The show was confined to Pontypridd and Rhondda district, and consisted of three classes—grocery, mineral waters, and bakery. The show, in the words of the promoter, is held for the purpose of en- couraging the hauliers to take pride and interest in the horses in their charge. In the judging of the animals, only the grooming or the man's work is taken into consideration. If," said Mr. Evans, the horse is not a good one, that is not the haulier's fault, and therefore it is not taken into consideration. I wish, however, to encour.age my men to keep their horses and equipment perfectly c lean, not only on the day of the show, but every day throughout the year, and that is why I give prizes to the hauliers for the cleanest turn-out, &c." The Holidays
The Holidays A Fe? Monattstnss and Some ?etcts W hitsunude, in many respects the most pleasant holiday of the year, is, as far as Mid-xvhondda is concerned this year, a period of glooni and depression. The cloud ot inuustrial strife hangs heavily over the aistrict, and there will be many who will hanker after the joys of country ramble and a seaside stroll, but whose j pockets *aV nay to any such proposals, There are others, however, who will not be so sorely handicapped, and to these the attractions of the first summer holi- day of the year will appeal with irresist- ible force. lo meet their convenience. the railway companies have arranged cheap trips to glorious country and breezy beaches, where the hardy miner, free from the toils of his arduous calling, will disport hinise. It to his heart's content. There are, howe-ver, other attractions nearer home which cannot fail to appeal to a large section of the community. Un- fortunately, the present year marks a break 111 the regularity of the Horse Show which has been held for several years past at Touypandy on Whit-Tuesday, but the charms of such an event may still be pur- sued at rerndale on Tuesday. The Welsh Islington has become deservedly famous for its splendid qaulity of entries, and this year w(, are assured that the show will excel those of previous years. Those who havo attended the show in past years will appreciate what all this means, and for Tuesday, at any rate, it can he confidently asserted that all roads ,ii???et-te d that all roads will lead to Ferndale. To the Eisteddfodwr. he who still believes in the potency t T the old Cymric institution as the people s university, the appeals of Caerphilly, L;iihi.rra- n Barry, and C'winamari will not be in vain. He who has spent a day within old Caer- philly's ruined castle, listening to the cadence of song being borne aloft on the breeze, will agreo that there' are less pleasant ways of spend ug a holiday. Llanharran also, with its stretch of glorious country, and Barry, within call of the sea, are ideal spots for holiday eisteddfodau. The big event of tlp holiday season is undoubtedly the Bath, and' West of England Show at Cardiff. An agricul- tural show casts a spell over many who are but little versed in the points of horses and cattle. There is a great deal of the primitive man in us all, and some- how or other an event, of this kind rarely j appeals to us in vain. We are nearer Mother Earth than we care to confess at times. The Rhondda and Swansea Bay Rail- way are offering exceptional Whitsuntide travelling facilities. On Friday, June 2nd. excursion tickets Vnl) be issued from stations in the Rhondda Valley and cer-1 tain Rhondda and Swansea Bay stations to Ferry side. CarTOartbVn, Fishguard and Goodwick. Aberystwyth and other stations in West Wales by ordinary trains via Briton Ferry.» The Saturday service of trains will be Am, and the 11 p.Pii. market train (Swansea to Cwmavoii; will be extended to Treherbert, calling at illtermediat.e, stations.
