Treorchy. r r- COUNCILLOR JOHN KANE AND j WORKMEN S HALL. I The workmen employed at the Abergorchy Collieries, Treorchy, have now cleared the debt on their i hall which is situated in Bute St., and which was erected at a cost of 15,000. In addition they have sev- eral hundreds of pounds in hand. The hall was erected four years ago and contains a massive billiard room, library, cinema and several com- mittee rooms, and ia an excellent building of which the workmen are rightly proud. The library contains 1,200 valuable volumes and it has been decided to devote a sum of £ 200 towards purchasing books each year. There is a movement on foot to ex- tend the billiard hall. Last Christ- ma stide over < £ ->00 was devoted to, old age pensioners and each one re- ceived over 80s. a ml there is every likelihood of the pensioners being recognised simil#lv this season. Mr Wm. Jones, Dumfries St., is the manager and secretary, while Mi- George Beynon, Trevor St., is chair- man. Much of the success is attri- buted to the invaluable assistance of Councillor John Kane, M.E., Watts- town, who is the president of the hall, and Mr Arthur Williams, M.E. Abergorchy Collieries. The officials of the hall were en- Thc, o fif cla l s of tertained to a charabanc outing by the Directors of the Abergorchy Col- lieries, through the influence of the Agent (Mr John Kane). f -ill' X.- L. i* Uii ti,& it/A iiICi i V' the secretary of the hall, and during his term of oiffce, he rendered valuable services to the committee. Mr David Cleavei, one of the old- est workmen at the a bove collieries, is the caretaker, and muck praise is due to him for the manner in which lie carries out his duties. OPERETTA PERFORMANCE AT TREORCHY. Music lovers of the district who attended the performance at Ta ber- nacle (E.W.) Church, Treorchy, last week, were given a rare musical treat when "Christmas Pr.'ze," an operetta from the pen of Mr W. H. Doane, in full character, was performed by an efficient choir under the conduct- orship of Mr A. G. Sheppard. The juveniles gave an effective selection of drills, etc., under the supervision of Miss B. Matthews (instructress), whilst in the characters Mr. Henry Davies as "Santa Claus," Messrs, Freddie Sheppard as "Tommy," and Trevor Fynn as "Joe, carried out their duties exceedingly well, and caused roars of laughter. Duets were given by Maud Lew;s and Edith Lewis, and Clarica Sheppard and Lixzie Floyd, and these 7/oung solo- ists fairly captivated their hearers, and they were vociferously applaud- ed. The selections rendered by the choir were splendid, and much praise is due to the conductor for his untir- ing efforts in training the youngsters. Mr. AV. IT-. 0 e-n, Ynyswen Schools, occupied the chair, and Miss Blodwen Miles, L. L.C.M. (silver medalist) was the accompanist. TREORCHY RESERVES 15 pts.; Y?YSYPWL, uil. 1., ?.='? H iil"i. Ynysybwl Juniors were the visit-i ors to the Caemawr, Treorchy, on I Wednesday, .the 17th inst., when the r it ft Treorchy Reserves in a Rhondda Valley Junior League j match. The homesters won by 15 points to nil. A few minutes from the commencement (lie home side • scored a splendid dropped goal through T. Summers, who judged the distance nicely. Five minutes later Caleb Evans increased the lead with an unconverted try. Treorcky, continu ing to press, again carried play weH into the visitors'. 25 line hut the Ynysybwl fullbaci secured and found touch, gaining much territory. The home backs were set in motion and from a pretty bout of passing T. Salisbury scored and converted for the homesters. Ten minutes after restart play was pretty even and the visiting backs made a number of llll- successful attempts to open out. Sub- >equpntlv, the Treorchy threes sec- ured and this resulted in T. Saund- ers adding another try.
