TROUBLES OF EXCHANGE. By BOYD CABLB. "I couldn't savvy any sense in what he was tellin' said the Gunner, "but for's I could make out, he'd saved some o' his pay out there and brought it here in coin oalled lira. He said a lira was supposed to be worth 9d., but they'd only give him Gd. each for 'em here. "That's all right," put in the Ser- geant, "the rate of exchange is about 40 lira to our quid. The value of the lira has dropped a lot since the War." This dash rate of exchange," said the Gunner. "I keep readin' about it in the papers every other day, and how the rate is agin us and how much we lose on everything we buy from America, and all that. Can anyone tell me wot it all means? Kamerad," said the Sapper briefly. II It's simple enough," said the Ser- geant, "it just means that before the War a British quid was worth twenty bob in America; but now it's only worth, I think, sixteen an' something—say, seven- teen bob." The Gunner knit his brows, and both the Sapper and he plainly were pondering this piece of information. "It's like their dash cheek, isn't it," said the Gunner, at length, to say our quid's only worth seventeen bob? But I don't see that we need make a swap like that. I'd tell 'em to keep their seven- teen bob an' I'd keep my quid." The Sergeant laughed. You're hand- ing them over your quid or a bit of it every day for their seventeen bob," be said. The Gunner stared at him. I haven't seen a bloomin' American for weeks that I know of," he said firmly. "An' when I do I'll see him further before I give him a quid for less than twenty good < shillings." You haven't done a deal in cash, per- haps," said the Sergeant. But -knen you read the rate of exchange is against Us and our quid is worth seventeen bob in America, it means that you and me and every soul in this country that buys anything from America has to pay twenty bob and get only seventeen bob's worth of goods." Nothin' doing wi' me, then," said the Gunner emphatically, when I read this exchange is against us like that." Same here," said the Sapper. "You can't help yourself," said the Sergeant, "because as-we are now, this country has to buy goods an' food from America. An' where d'you suppose the tobacco came from that's in the fag you're smoking? It's Virginian-Ameri- can. And the same number o' fags you'd buy in America for seventeen pence you had to pay twenty pence for here." The Gunner took the cigarette from his mouth and looked at it as indignantly as if it had swindled him personally. "That's a bloomin' have," he remarked. Wot other fags but American can I buy an' get full value for my money in? "You can't, that I know of," said the Sergeant, and there's the whole trouble. This country needs so many things from America—all sorts, from steel rails an' typewriters to bread and beef- that we just have to keep on buyin' them, even although we know we're paying out twenty bob for seventeen bobs' worth of goods." It's a bloomin' dead swindle," said the Gunner indignantly. "Why oan't we turn roun' and tell them that we'll only give 'em seventeen bobs' worth for their twenty bob? And why buy steel rails an' things from 'em at all?" asked the Sapper. Why not make 'em here an' save our good money? That's the same question put different," said the Sergeant. It's a bit hard to explain, but the plain fact is we don't make as many steel rails an' things as we can do with. We do make some things and sell 'em to America, but she only hits us again there and pays us seventeen bob for every quid's worth. But it's just because we buy more from her than we sell that they have the pull on us, and tell us they'll only do a deal if we'll let them count our quid worth seventeen bob. We can't sell them more things than we're doing because we're not making enough. We'd win on it now if we were selling goods to countries where the exchange is in our favour, but ell we're making to sell everywhere isn't enough to swing the American rate to our side." I don't rightly savvy this business yet," said the Gunner in puzzled tones. S'pesin' I'm England, then wot bloomin' differ does it make if I sell America one steel rail or a million or buy one, or a million, or none? Why isn't my money as good as theirs?" You know what credit is," said the Sergeant. You know what running an account on tick at your grocer's is? Y M-though the missus always insists on payin' him cash," said the Gunner. Too true. I know," said the Sapper. I ran tick at the canteen once when I was broke. An' the swine that fixed it for me used to give me short measures an' charge extry for wot he called interest; an' I couldn't kick, me owin' him the money. There you have this rate of exchange trouble again," said the Sergeant. If this country was making and selling goods enough to other countries to have the cash to pay America on the nail for the steel and wheat we buy, we'd get full twenty shillings' worth for every quid- like the Gunner's missus has horse-sense enough to see with the grocer. And if we go on running a big score on the slate like you did wi' th' canteen, and like this country has done with America, we've got to take short measure and put up with it. Tivaro"o the whole thing in nutshell." Why didn't this rate stand against us before, Sergeant, as you were sayin' it didn't before ic«r? Because we were making and selling goods enough to have money to pay cash any minute we were asked," said the Ser- geant. And we're not now. That's fill." Then you'd get the full value of your twenty bob vgain in your baccy and bread and all the rest. Every shilling of wages you draw would be worth more and buy more. That's why." Then if I get you right," said the Gunner, all this rate of exchange trouble simply means every man must work harder to win out on the rate?" On that, AND on everything else," Mid the Sergeant. You can wrap it up in all sorts of fancy names and ways, but there is the straight truth that everyone knows in the bottom of his lie-,ii-t 'a incl thfttjyou'll never get away from--the harder you work, day rate, piece rate, or j any other rate, the more you earn, and jet.

TONYPANDY. I Prof. T. W. Chance, M.A.. B.D., of the Baptist College, Cardiff, occupied the pulpit at Bethel (E.B.) Chapel, Tony- pandy, on Sunday, the 23rd inst., when the anniversary services of the church were held. Very timely discourses upon the following subjects were attentively listened to and keenly appreciated The necessity for the postulate of God (morn- ing) Breaking down the Fences (after- noon) and Regeneration (evening). 

Porth Police Court. Thursday, November 20th, before the Stipendiary (Mr Lleufer Thomas), Dr. Naunion Davies, Alderman David Lewis. Messrs. F. L. Jacob, Dd. Thomas, W. H. Matthias, D. Enoch, and Stephen Evans. I A COLLIERY ALTERCATION. James Randall, Ynyehir, was charged with doing grievous bodilp harm to John Lewis at the Lady Lewis colliery, Ynys- hir. Mr Idris Price pros:cuted, and said that the offence was committed whilst the parties were in a "gwt" outside the col- liery lamp station. Randall went out of his turn and Lewis objected whereupon the former without any provocation struck the prosecutor near the eye with a lamp ahield. Prosecutor bore out this statement and said that he had not worked since the date of the alleged assault (November 13). During the altercation witness asked the defendant to fetch his father adding, "It it dangerous to speak to a young man these days." Witness admitted he became heated and said" things" to the de- fendant. Corroborative evidence having been given by two workmen, P.C. Moore said he found Lewis bleed- ing from a cut near the eye. Defendant, when interrogated said, "I did not do it purposely; I was turning round." The charge wRsreduced to one of as- sault and the defendant said he nevet- struck the prosecutor with the shield; the latter knocked against it accidentally. Lewis used bad language towards witness. He (Randall) had served with the colours for five years, having been wounded twice. The Bench accepted the view that the defendant had been provoked and fiiied him £ 3. DOGS VERSUS PIGS. Alice Coombs, Lew is-te race, Pen, hiwfer, summoned James Quin for using bad language and for cruelty to her pig*. Mr Idris Price defended. Mrs Coombs stated that the defendant turned his two dogs on her three pigs on the main road taking pieces" out of their backs. When remonstrated with defend- ant used the language complained of and threatened to knock her brains out. Questioned by Mr Price she admitted tbRt she had once been bound over to keep the peace. P.C. Evans said he examined the pigs on one of whom was a slight scratch which was not consistent with a dog's bite. Violet Nelson deposed to seeing tle complainant, her husband and two sons going to the defendant after the affair of the pigs. Mrs Coombs u?.-ed bad language. The summonses were dismissed the Bench being not satisfied that the complainant had made out her case. TONYREFAIL BOYS AND PASTRIES. I Two Tonyrefall boys were charged with stealing pastries and cake from the shop of Mrs Smith, High street, Tonyrefail. Mr W. G. Spickernell prosecuted and called Mrs A. Mitchell who spoke to see- ing the defendants enter and leave the shop. One ran away and inside the blouse of the second she found cake and pastries. She gave one of the lads a "flip." When charged by P.C. Lloyd one de tendanfc blamed the other. Mr Idris Price pleaded that one of the boys was not normal and the case against him was adjourned for a week. The otho: defendant was placed on probation for twelve monts. One of the lads summoned Mrs Mitchell for assault and she was discharged with a caution. FERXDALE LANGUAGE. Ralph Griffiths (20), miner, Ferndale, summoned for using bad language, was fined C3 it being stated that he had been previously convicted for a similar offence.
