From the Editor's Chair.
From the Editor's Chair. The "Table"—the House Keepers Jour- nal illumines every question which deals with food. Its criticism on the Profiteer- ing Act does constitute an eulogy. It avers that though it has been in force for some weeks, it has not as yet given any striking evidence of telling upon the high prices. This may be true of London, but ai the country the prices have certainly come down, though not down to the stahdard prices which one and all of us would Ike to see. It is right in its obser- vations that like all new demands made it has grown its additional stock of officials. Whatever may be said for naturalisation or municipalisation there is no denying the dead certainty of official creations arising from such legislation. The rates and taxes now p:i;d whether locally or imperially, has added greatly to the officialdom of the country. Unfor- tunately, public officialsi are generally created from [the ranks of the most agitating class. In fact, the-e is cer- tainly some ground for the suspicion that many of the people who clamour most for this or that. sort of institution have an eye un tlip, main chance, Yet officials cannot de'ect much unless complainants ex.st and the history of this Act so far re- veals the fact that customers are reluctant to make complaints. Again it has proved .hat the retailers are not so much the im- posters as the wholesa eis. They are the real culprits and, unfortunately, they are nut touched. In the cases aiready indicted n the courts the retailers have been ab e to produce their books and prove, by the -iii-o,.ces, that their charges are not excess I s: ve compared to the prices tlll y have pa:d .ho wholesaler and, thereto e, the public hould not be blamed unjust y or pathefc, and really there seems little inducement for anybody to incur the j'oub e and face the odium of making fruitless complaints. Milk is very dear, and butter is very scarce, and so long as milk is dear, and the farmers can make a handsome p-ofit by it, there wili be less and less butter made. The British Dairy Famers Asso- ciation admitted in the Chairman's speech that the price of milk was too h'gh ard pronounced the opinion that it would continue to be too high until the heavy hand of the- Government were removed, md expressed the pious hope that in he public interest the control of m ik should be removed as soon as possible. On he other hand the Food Cor.t oiler says: "If the maximum prices had not been fixed for this winter the public would ilmost certainly have had to pay substan- tially higher prices in tha nrd-w nter months, although they might have paid ower prices in October or April. Whose opinion is the one to take. We shall vote or the Controller. The farmers have not Rowed much consideration for the public. They have shown the most caMous dis- regard to the we fa-e of th? people. The day of reckoning will come. The fullest accounting will be given to these matters and the obvious moral is that we should send out loaded cargoes of s-h ps from the "ountry and then the return of food supplies will come with an ampFtude that will adjust this abnormal cost of living, in these days. The grand old law still holds he field that lower prices will on'y come with bountiful supp'ies.

Prof. Gruffydd thanked the Chairman ior his remarks and proceeded to define idle most cultured man as the man who opened the most windows ul-on Life or i\ ho touched Life at, most points. Im- portant "wÎhdows" were provided by poetry, religion, love of children, etc. Wales, he said, had its own culture. Con- trasting Welsh with English culture, he said that English education was monastic n origin, while that of Wales had its root n the Eisteddfod, with the Sund,ay schooi as nursery; and on the latter foundation any adequate Wefeh culture must be built. The qualities sought to be instil ed nto English pupils were truth and! hon- >ur, playing the game, and respect for authority, wlire Welsh aims were respect of persnality or respect for the feelings of othevs, and its natural corollary, love o' lbe-ty., neighbourliness, and mercy. If the Bolsheviks and Anarchists would jnly think for a moment, they would eause that there would, be no a. my, navy, jost othce, gas, water, and tiains if it -vere not for the pr.vate ownership ot he means of production. Now what are the means of production? ihey are the iand, cotton nulls, woollen mills, iron in all its branches, leather, silk, g ass, earthenware, chemicals, coal, ships, lyes, motor cars, toys, manufactories, &c. Tiie employment of labour and the pay- ment of wages to labour depends entirely on the above private owners, whom Bol- heviks and Anarchists seek to abolish, ff the owners of the chimney shafts have no work, then there is no wages, no money for the shopkeepers or for gas, water, trams, army, navy, and post office. Em- p oyers of labour cannot be made by Bol- heviks' and workmen's votes, but by Jieir own abilities; and but for the suc- cess of their abilties, labour would be unemployed. Suppose Anarchists led a pro; ession twelve deep and a m le long, and then jlew trumpets and passed resolutions from twe:ye diff erent platforms. How many orders for cotton, woollen, iron. coal, etc., would ali this bring to employ labour None! Then, no orders, no work no work, no wages; no money for shop- keepers. Now, consider two industries out of thf above list, viz., cotton and coal. Who builds the great expensive cotton mills 01 Lancashire and equips them with engines, boilers, gearing, mac'h-'nery, and pays a I labour of varying degrees of skill and t" kes a 1 risks of ITofit or loss Why, the owners. Who sinks the very expensive coal pits and equips them with winding nigines, boilers, pumps, gearing, under- ground workings, pays all labour of vary- ing degrees of skill and takes all risks ol irofit or oss Why, the owners, the only class of men capable of doing this. If em- ployers of labour pay 20s. and can on'y get 18s. back, labour ceases to be em- ployed. The greater skill will never serve the lesser; that is, bricksetters win neve serve their hodcarriers, blacksmiths tileIT strikers, journeymen their apprentices, masters their managers and foremen. Why? Because they are al unequal Ir skill and wealth-producing, and so can never have an equal distribution of wealth. Lenin's ignorance of thece facts ha-~ caused Russia --ed ruin, and the Bolshevik1 and Anarchists in our own trades n onis wi 1 cause our red rui n if the above plin practical facts 're not Vette- unden-stood by the vast majority of thf communities amongst wlrch we live. Yours, etc., A REFORMED EXTREMIST. WOMEN'S TEMPERANCE UNION. To the Editor, "Rhondda Leader," t,ir,-oes iiss Williams th.nk that the level-headed peeple of this country are Lkèy to swallow the exaggerated state- ments made at the meeting of the South Wales Women's Temperance Union on Ocober 29th last? The inuendo that brewers were the only profiteers I leave for your readers to judge as to the truth. Aiso the ridiculous and exaggerated state- ment as to the profits made by the brewers during the war. The trad,e is not strongly represented in the House of Commons. That statement, too, is an exaggeration. It may have many supporters, but that does not necessarily mean that they hold even one share in a brewery. It is quite evident that Miss Williams belongs to the fanatical party. The party who are out for destruction and not re- form. Under such circumstances further comment seems needless. Yours, etc., A. J. MADDOCKS. Cardiff, November 4th, 1919. THE DOCTOR'S QUESTION AT THE NAVAL COLLIERIES. To the Editor, "Rhondda Leader," f.. bll"Ulle oi the, if not the most serious aspect ot this, and every other question, is the sad inditterence and lethargy of the working, men with regard to their personal and general interest. We, as workmen, have almost lost our identity, and the whole authority, power, and Influence de- volves into the hands of a gang of nn. pudent and fast men, who bel.eve in the r hearts, that they are superior iii all things. We are ridden, robbed, and be- trayed in every movement, under the pre- tence,, of the "interest of the working man." My te low workmen, it is time we should he awake, and alert, and retain in our own hands our interests and destinies, or soon we shall be at the cruel irercy of worse tyrants, than the worst kind of employers cou'd ever be. It is now proposed by the ruling gang to establish the new scheme of medical service. The present system is the pound- age scheme, under which every work- man's family receive medical aid for the ow sum, of twopence for every pound earned. Under the proposed new scheme it is prpoosed to charge fourpence in the pound. Under the present system medical aid and drugs and other necessaries and even hospital treatment are given, and the attention and care of patients are never disputed. The present system pro- vides competition amongst medical iren, which is b-ovoncl fd'sput-o to all right- minded men the best guarantee of good and fruitful services. Under the new scheme the workmen wi l be compelled to accept the medical service of one doctor, selected by a committee, who will always care more for their own pockets than they will for people's health, free chocce and liberty. The simple and most important question for all to decide s: Who is the best judge to select a doctor for me and my family. Myself or someone else? If you think that yourself is the best to select your own, then retain your present liberty and act the man. If vou tb n'r someone else is better adapted to s^'ect your family doctor, then you go under, and act the goat-unfit, for the soe'ety of men, nor the caretaker of your fami'y. Yours, etc., INDUSTRIOUS.
