Porth Police Court.
Porth Police Court. Thursday, February 22nd, before Mr. D. Lleufer Thomas (Stipendiary), Messrs. Tom John, M.A., David Fenwick, David Thomas I (Ferndale), T. Morgan, and Wm. Evans. COAL STEALING AT TREHAFOD. < Two young boys were fined 15s. each, and two others 20s. each for stealing coal from the Lewis Merthyr Colliery Tip at Tre- hafod. A man named George Price fined JE1 for a like offence, offered the singular excuse that his son had returned from South Africa with fever. P.C. Thomas proved the thefts. CRUELTY TO A HORSE AT FERNDALE I Fredk. Benjamin, Ferndale, was charged with working a. horse in an unfit state. P.C. Harry spoke to stopping defendant, and on examination found that his horse was suffering from a raw wound on the shoulder. A fine of 5a. was imposed. For allowing the horse to be so worked, Wm. Benjamin was fined a similar amount. He informed the Bench that he did not know the horse had been taken out of the stable. ALLEGED THEFT OF A WATCH. John James Evans pleaded not guilty to stealing a watch valued 36s. from a dressing room at the Clarence Theatre, Pontypridd. P.C. Bates arrested prisoner, and in reply to the charge said' he was at theatre seeking for employment. Prisoner the theatre seeking for employment. Prisoner was given the benefit of the doubt and discharged. I MISCHIEVOUS BOYS AT I 3LAENLLECHAU. A number of boys were fined 10s. each for wilfully setting fire to growing grass at Blaenllechau. When they had caused the mischief they ran away, but fell right into the arms of a police constable. I A DANGER IN THE STRAND, I j FERNDALE. Gilbert Thomas, haulier, Ferndale, was ordered to pay 10s. for failing to have a red rear light to his cart. Defendant's exeuse was that the lamp was out of repair and it had since been put right. The Sti- pendiary said the offence was a serious one and dangerous in a busy street like the Strand. I A COLLISION AND EXPLOSION OF I EPITHETS. David Jones, collier, Tonyrefail, at nine p.m. on the 12th inst. had a collision in the atreet with another man who com- 'menoed to quarrel. This led to defendant using bad language, and he was fined 20s. I PROVOCATION AT PONTYGWAITH. I John Davies, collier, summoned for in- decent language at Pontygwaith, pleaded provocation from boys. As he is in in- different health and on compensation, he was discharged on payment of 48. costs. I A CONSIDERATE DEFENDANT. I For bad language at Cymmer, Evan Bolton, collier, sent an apology to the court by P.C. Joneii on the ground that he did not want to lose a day's work by an- swering the summons personally. His excuse was accepted on payment of a fine of 20s. THE DIFFICULTY OF GETTING COAL. Richard Thomas, haulier, Mardy, work- ing nights underground, was charged with stealing 1 cwt. coal valued at Is. 3d. from the Ferndalo Colliery Tip, the property of Messrs. D. Davis and Sons. Defendant pleaded that he had no ceal in the house, and his wife and youngster were bad. He had put in an order at the colliery, but had a difficulty in getting it, as he lived at apartments with another collier, and they had to take loads alternately. Defendant was discharged on the understanding that he paid 10s. to the court poor-box. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Rees.Owen, a, Ferndale lamplighter, was brought Hp on remand, accused of having attempted to -commit suicide by hanging himself to a bed-post with a silk scarf. De- fendant's landlady stated that he had stayed at her house five weeks. She could. not take him back as she was afraid. P. Inspector Thomas said the man had behaved strangely earlier in the day, when he was found by two constables in a culvert and was very cold. Defendant was re- manded to Pontypridd on the following Wednesday, and to remain at the Work- house in the meantime. I HIS FIRST OFFENCE. I Thomas Barber, collier, Ferndale, was bound over to be of good behaviour for six months on a charge of being drunk and disorderly. P.S. Young said the man had been discharged from the Army, and was a good regular workman, this being his first offence. I LANDLORD AND TENANT AT I YNYSHIR. I STRONG LANGUAGE IN COURT. I A row between landlord and tenant at Ynyshir led to some strong language when Robert Baker summoned John Wall for assault. Mr. Idris Price prosecuted for complainant. It appeared that Baker was the tenant of a house and Wall lived in apartments with him. He had. been given notice to quit, and when it aspired he was asked when he was going. Defendant, it was alleged, struck complainant who is an invalid and crippled on one foot, with the result that he had to be medically attended. The mark of a black eye was still to be seen. Robert Baker in the witnegs box said the notice referred to was up on Boxing Day. Defendant had not made an effort tor find another place. Defendant: That's a lie The Stipendiary Silence I You will have your chance to speak later. Continuing his evidence., witness said Wall jumped at him, grabbed at him, and < felled him to the ground. He was unable to work for a week after. Defendant's version of the affair was that he was unable to find a place, and would be only too glad if he could. Replying to a question from witness, Baker denied that he rushed into his room drunk, nor was it true that he jumped at him like a tiger. Questioned by Mr. Price, defendant ad- mitted he had not lost any work, but said he ought to have stayed away; it was he (witness) who ought to have raised the summons and not complainant. He had been at Ynyshir about 18 months. Asked how many houses he had lived at during that time, defendant refused1 to answer as he held that it had nothing to do with the ease. Elsie May Baker, a little daughter of complainant, having described what took place, the Stipendiary said Baker had ad- mitted having a couple of pints, and in his opinion had acted somewhat indiscreetly. Defendant was bound over for 6 months, and ordered to pay 5s. towards the costs.
