BARRY BAND OF HOPE UNIOIS
BARRY BAND OF HOPE UNIOIS SUCCESSFUL FIFTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL. STRONG DISAPPROVAL OF THE LICENSING BILL. There was a crowded attendance of the public at the Romilly Hall, Barry, on Wednesday evening last to participate in the fifth annual festival of the Barry District Band of Hope Union. Thanks to the zeal and energy displayed by Mr A. J. Medcroft. the conductor of the singing, and Mr J. P. Panniers, the hon secretary, the arrangements were as usual, well carried out. Mr J. C. Meggitt, J.P., Chairman of the District Council, presided, and he was supported by. the Rev J. Sutton. Mr J. Cruise (president of the Union), Councillor S. R. Jones, and other gentlemen. The girls in the choir were all neatly dressed in white, with blue sashes, and the boys wore blue ties and rosettes. The programme opened by the Choir singing Come, gather, ye lovers of children," the audience heartily joining in the chorus, foilowed by an appropriate prayer, offered by the Rev J. Sutton. The chorus, •' Arouse, ye Patriot Band," was rendered with enthusiasm by the children, after which the Barry Baptist Band of Hope prettily gave the Hand- kerchief Song." The Fan Drill," executed by the Barry Presbyterian Band, was also very well given. Mount Pleasant Band rendered an action song, The Heroes of the Future," and the Choir followed with the spirited chorus. Success to the Barry Band of Hope Union." One of the best items of the evening was given by the Bible Christian Band of Hope, entitled Our Washing Day," the singing and action in this being exceptionally good. The Barry English Congregational Party also delighted the audience with a tambourine drill; and the Barry Mission Band, represented by two girls, who excellently sang the duett Some Mother's Child," was also exceedingly good, the young singers being encored. After the Choir had finely rendered the chorus, No Compensation," the Rev J. Sutton came forward and proposed a resolution entering an emphatic protest against the Licensing Bill now before Parliament, regarding it as inadequate to deal with the appalling evils of the Liquor Traffic. The rev gentleman remarked that he was sorry there was any need for a resolution of this'kind, and he desired to enter a strong protest against this abominable Bill. (Cheers.) He hoped in a few days it would be dedicated to the waste paper basket, but when he considered what the majority in the House was like he was afraid of it. Mr Sutton described the Bill not as a publicans' measure, but as a brewers' measure.-Councillor S. R. Jones, in seconding, said if this Bill became law they would turn the poor Baptist deacons into bottle-washers, just because they were fond of a drop of water. (Laughter.) He hoped they would stand firm, and endeavour to hand down to posterity the liberties which their fore- fathers had fought so bravely for. With God on their side, they would defeat Mr Balfour and his Government. (Cheers.) -The resolution was unanimously passed.—The Choir then sang the chorus, Fire I Fire Fire the next item, "Nursery Rhymes Revised," by the Cadoxton Wesleyan Band of Hope, being particu- larly good. Barry Wesleyan Party gave a pretty action song entitled, The Fairies," after which the Choir received warm applause for the chorus, Temperance Boys and Girls." Barry Island Wesleyan Band rendered the action song, Little Mothers," followed by a Maypole dance well executed by Salem Welsh Baptist Band of Hope. An action song, Milkmaids," by the Barry English Baptist Band, was the next item, and the chorus Hip-Hip-Hurrah which was excellently given by the Choir, proved a fitting climax to a most enjoyable pfogramme A vote of thanks was heartily accorded to the Chairman, and all who had taken part, and the National Anthem brought the first evening's festival to a close. The festival will be continued on Saturday evening next, when the programme will be slightly varied. Dr W. Lloyd Edwards will pre- side, and we are sure, after the splendid perfor- mance of Wednesday evening, the hall will again be crowded.
