"CANDLES ON THE ALTAR." To the Editor of the "BARRY DOCK NEWS." DEAR Sin,—Yes, there are some very queer people in the world. The queerest are those who imagine Candles on an Altar of Roman Catholic origin the custom is, however, Jewish. > When Nebuchadnezzar sacked Jerusalem, he found golden candlesticks adorning its shrine. When Titus burgled the Holy City he, too, saw and carried away with him those splendid ornaments. Again, when Alaric, the Goth, pillaged Rome, it is supposed they were thrown into the Tiber; any. way, they have not been heard of since that memorable event. There was a time, not very long since, when people supposed it would be more pleasing to God to worship in an ugly white-washed building than in an ornamented Temple. There was a time, too, when the Presbyterians would not have in their churches a kist of whistles," meaning an organ. Thank God the ideas and beliefs of those days are passing away. Shall we go back to those days which Bobby Burns slashed so unmercifully ?— O. ye wba are sae guid yoursels, Sae pious and sae holy, Ye've nought to do but mark and tell Your neebours faults and folly Whose life is like a weel-gaun mill, Supplied wi' store o' water, The heaped hopper's ebbing still, And still the clap plays clatter. -Faithfully yours, D. J. HUTCHINS, Barry.
