SUNDAY DRINKING AT BARRY.
SUNDAY DRINKING AT BARRY. DISGRACEFUL SCENES, AND THE POLICE POWERLESS TO • INTERFERE. WE have, on at least one former occasion, called attention to the disgraceful scenes of debauchery which occur, almost every Sunday during the summer, on a piece of waste land abutting upon the top of Daniel-street, Cadoxton. Here a large number of men assemble every Sunday, and, providing themselves with several casks of beer, indulge in revelry and other excesses which reflect the utmost discredit upon the town. All this is done within the knowledge, and frequently under the observation of the police yet they are quite powerless to interfere. The land on which these disgraceful orgies .take place is private property, belonging, we are informed, to Mr John Cory, J.P., and without direct instruc- tions from the owner, the police authori- ties have no power to make any arrest, nor to suppress the shameful and I I demoralising scenes which are to be I witnessed thereat Sunday after Sunday. We are quite convinced that the respected owner of the land, which, by the bye, is enclosed and borders upon the highway, has no knowledge whatever of the uses to which the land is being put by these men; and in the interests of public decency and morality we hope steps will be taken, either by residents of the vicinity or by some of the ministers of the gospel on their behalf, to approach Mr Cory with a view of obtaining the necessary permission to empower the police to take proceedings against the men as trespassers, and thus enable a grossly shameful evil, which has been allowed to exist without effective inter- ference for a long time, to be thoroughly stamped ont.
ILOCAL AND GENERAL NOTES.
LOCAL AND GENERAL NOTES. j Why not form a Cricket League in PROFOSED CRICKET LEAGUE the Barry district? FOR BARRY. This, a good sug- gestion, has been made to us re- peatedly, and we are inclined to think that there is something in it. There are at least nine junior clubs in the district, which would make the nucleus of a good league. By so doing the interest in local matches-although, indeed, keen at present-would be enhanced, and each player would feel the responsibility of being a factor in the result, whether in favour of or against his side. We cannot complain of lack of interest in this excellent form of summer pastime in the Barry district, but the formation of a league would certainly stimulate a still further fascination for the game. We recommend this suggestion to the careful con- sideration of Barry cricketers.
BARRY AND DISTRICT EDUCATIONAL…
BARRY AND DISTRICT EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY. The final lecture for the session in connection with the above Society, will be held this evening (Friday) when Miss C. L. Thomson, examiner in English Literature to the Central Welsh Board, will take as her subject, "The Teaching of English Literature." Miss Thomson is thoroughly master of her subject, and has written and edited several standard works on English History and Literature, as well as excellent story books for children, notably the Romance Readers, which aim at forming an introduction to the great literature of the world. It is a great privilege for the Society to have a lecture from such an exponent of English Literature, and there should be a good attendance. The lecture will be held in the Wesleyan Chapel, Holton-road, Barry Docks, at 7.30 p.m. The public will be admitted on payment of sixpence.
