THE PRESIDENCY OF THE ORDER…
THE PRESIDENCY OF THE ORDER OF DRUIDS. DEMONSTRATION AT BARRY TO WELCOME HOME COUNCILLOR WHITE. Notwithstanding the several counter-attractions in the town, the members of a number of friendly societies and a large gathering of the townspeople took part in the demonstration held at Barry on Saturday afternoon last to welcome Councillor A. T. White, the newly-elected President of the United Ancient Order of Druids, on his return home from the biennial Conference of the Order held at New- castle during the week. Mr White arrived at Cadoxton Station by the 4.42 train, and on alighting was greetei by Mr R. N. Davies, the president of the Friendly Societies' Council. A pro- cession was then formed, consisting of the Victoria, A. T. White, Cadoxton, and Penmark Lodges of Druids, the local courts of Foresters, the local lodges of Oddfellows (M.U. and G.U.), R.A.O.B., Rational Sick and Burial, Operative Bricklayers, &c., accompanied by the Barry Dock Unionist and Cogan Military Bands. The procession, more than half-a-mile in length, passed through the principal streets of the town, a collection being made en route in aid of the Nursing Association. On arrival at the Romilly Hall, which was crowded to excess, the formal reception of President White took place, suitable speeches of welcome and congratulation being delivered by Mr J. A. Manaton, J.P., the chairman of the District Council, on behalf of the town; Mr Edward H. Jenkins, P.D.M., on behalf of the South Wales and Monmouthshire District of the Order of Druids and Mr R. N. Davies on behalf of Kindred Friendly Societies. In the evening, Presi- dent White was entertained at dinner at the Assembly-room of the Victoria Hotel, BarryJDocks, when the company in attendance numbered over 300. Councillor J. A. Manaton presided, and amongst those present were Mr Harrison, the president of the South Wales and Monmouthshire District; Mr T. B. Tordoff, the town clerk of Barry Messrs R. N. Davies, E. H. Jenkins, W. R. Lee, W. Harper, O. Horton, John Thomas, F. Walls, C. Brook, W. C. Gilbert, F. Duck, Sydney Davies, J. Davies, and other representatives of the Friendly Society movement in the town. In course of the convivial proceedings which followed the dinner, the toast of the evening, that of the Order of Druids and of the health of President White, was submitted by Mr J. R. Llewellyn, editor of the Hurry Dock News, and was received with the utmost enthusiasm, the heartiness of the toast being emphasised by the fact that Mr White is the first Barry man who has ever attained to so distinguished a position.—Replying to the toast, President White thanked the lodges and the towns- people for the spontaneous expression of good feeling accorded to him that day. The honour conferred upon him by the Order of Druids was an honour conferred upon the South Wales and Monmouthshire District which he had been instru- mental in founding. The Order to-day consisted of 796 lodges in Great Britain and the Colonies, with a total membership of 96,117 at the close of last year, but he hoped that this numerical strength would be raised to 100,000 during his period of office as president. The surplus funds of the Order considerably exceeded half-a-million sterling, and whilst they stood about seventh numerically amongst the chief Friendly Societies they were second or third financially. (Cheers,) This year female delegates had been sent to the biennial Conference for the first time, and he hoped that steps would be taken in the South Wales district, where there were some of the strongest lodges in the Order, to establish female branches. (Cheers).—Mr Harrison. the district president, proposed the toast of Kindred Societies, which was acknowledged by Mr R. N. Davies, who advocated the establishment of an annual Lifeboat Saturday, and a Friendly Societies' Sunday in the town.—Mr E. H. Jenkins proposed a vote of thanks to the Chairman (Mr Manaton) for the prominent part he had taken in the demonstration that day. (Cheers). Friendly Societies, Mr Jenkins said, were the backbone of the country, and Mr Manaton had done honour to this great universal movement by attending to do honour to President White. (Cheers).— Councillor Manaton, in reply, said friendly societies had contributed a great deal towards the uplifting of the town of Barry, and he felt it was his duty, as it was his pleasure, as chairman of the District Council, to be present in his official capacity to join in the demonstration of welcome and congratulation to Councillor White. (Cheers,) He was glad to see so many juveniles taking part in that day's proceedings, and made an, appeal to the young men of the town to join friendly societies -Mr J. Davies, who proposed the toast of th% Host and Hostess (Councillor and Mrs E. Williams), said he was proud that he was arch- druid of the Victoria Lodge when Mr White was made president of the Order. (Cheers.)—Mr W. C. Gilbert proposed, and Mr F. Duck seconded, a vote of thanks to Mr T. B. Tordoff, the town clerk, for his attendance on the occasion, and Mr Tordoff, in responding to a cordial reception of the vote, said the election of Mr White to the presidency of the Order of Druids was a compliment to the town. This was the first gathering of the kind that he had attended at Barry, and he would have mueh pleasure in becoming an honorary member of the Victoria Lodge. (Cheers.)—Mr W. Harper proposed The Pre3s," and Mr J. R. Llewellyn, (Barry Dock News) responded.-Songs, &o., were rendered during the evening by Messrs W. Preston, B. Ringwald, J. Thomas, D. R. Williams, and J. Davies, and Mr E. Ryan presided at the piano. BASEBALL: GRANGETOWN V. BARRY DOCK CONSERVATIVES.
