BARRY-COUNTY SCHOOL.— This match took place on the County School ground on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for the Villa by 37 runs. A. Archer (20) and T. Griffiths (16) batted well for the winners, and F. Dure trundled splendidly, taking seven wickets for ten runs. Scores :—Barry Villa, 62 runs County School, 25 runs. ATHLETIC CHATTER, Barry Y.M.C.A. Cricket Club are improving in form at every match they play. Last Saturday they made a good show against Penarth Central 2nds, winning by three runs. Next Saturday they have a stiff engagement against St. Mary's (Barry Docks.) Barry Dock C.C. are on the up-grade. They won their first match of the season last Saturday, defeating the strong Mia-Rhondda team by six rans-86 to 80. They also almost defeated Tondu on the previous Saturday, stumps being drawn when Tondu wanted 36 runs to win, and only two wickets to fall. Barry Island is beeominsr quite popular in athletic circles. Mr Gwyn Nicholls. the Welsh international captain, and Mr H. B. Winfield, the international full-back, have been spending a holiday there during the past few weeks. Last Saturday. Gwyn Nieholls turned out for Barry Island C.C., against Spiller,, and Bakers (Cardiff), and compiled a good 24 runs. Pedestrianism has gained a firm foothold in Barry, and the two walking matebes last Saturday, in connection with the Barry Coaltrimmers and the Barry Railway's Mechanical Department, proved a great successs. The Shop Assistants of the district have taken the matter up, and will walk from Llantwit Major home next Wednesday. A good entry has already been received, and the event promises to make itself prominent in the town. The competitors will start from the Cross Keys Inn, and those who hold out will finish at the Castle Hotel, Barry Docks. The assistants are busily training, and several have already covered the eleven-mile course in good time. We understand the grocers of Barry are also contemplating a walk. II There was some smart scoring in the match Barry Y.M.C.A. C.C. v. Penarth Central 2nds at Penarth last Saturday. An arrangement was made to "draw stumps" at 6.30. The first innings had been played, and the Centrals had all batted in the second innings, the time then being 6 pm., leaving the Y.M.C.A. half-an-hour to make 44 runs, which would give them a win by one run. The Y.M.C.A. started at the wickets at three minutes past six, and had scored 46 runs at 6.27 p.m., when the last wickeb fell, leaving them victors by three runs. I. Richards is fast becoming one of the best bowlers in St. His display on Saturday speaks creditably for his team. Last Saturday St. Mary's 2nds won two matches in one day. V In six matches, F. Dure, captain of Barry Villa C.C., has taken 40 wickets for the small total of 57 runs.. r Barry Villa will soon be mainly composed of coloured men. f SAD FATE OF A RAILWAY PORTER AT BARRY ISLAND. KILLED WHILST IN THE ACT OF COUPLING. The 3.30 p.m. passenger train from Barry Island on Sunday last was in charge cf Joseph B. Bilson, aged 21, living at 20, Regent-street, Barry Docks. uilsoii was employed as porter at Barry Station, but he took the first afternoon train to the Island as acting-guard, and was in the act of coupling a van to the hind coach of the train, when, it is supposed, he was caught between the buffers and crushed. Bilson was not missed till the train had reached Barry Station, when a message was sent back to the Island that he was not in the train. A search was made, and his dead body was found in the four-footway, just where the van. which had not been coupled to the train, stood. Bilson was an expert cyclist, and was awarded at the recent May Show Parade at Barry the first prize for the best character display with his machine. An inquest was held on the body on Tuesday afternoon at the Police Court, Barry Docks, before Mr E. Llewellyn Reece, the deputy coroner. Mr A, Jackson, solicitor, was present to represent the relatives of the deceased, and Inspector Osborne attended for the Barry Railway Company. Ben Davies, engine driver, described the coupling operations which took place on Sunday afternoon on the line between the Island Station and the Tunnel entrance. Deceased was in the act of coupling an extra coach on to the passenger train, when he believed the deceased got in between the train and coach, and was crushed between the buffers. Deceased was not missed till the train reached Barry Station. The station-master at Barry Island acted as guard from the Island to Barry.-Daniel Brennan, an examiner on the Barry Railway, was present whilst the deceased attempted to couple the extra coach on to the train. Deceased was on the off side of the train. When he thought deceased had made the coupling, and that he was returning towards the engine on the other side, he (witness) called to him, but received no answer. Witness was examining the train, and when he finished he signalled to the driver all right," and went to examine another train. After the train bad reached Barry Station, deceased was missed. He made a search, and found Bilson lying dead outside the 14 four-foot."—Driver Davies, re-called, said he took from Brennan what he thought were repeat signals from the deceased before he started the train forward after he thought the spare coach had been coupled. It was quite usual on railways to take repeated signals. — Dr Billups, who examined the body after the accident, said death was due to deceased having been crushed between the buffers and the jury returned a verdict of Accidental death."

THE BRITISH WORKMAN'S AND GENERAL ASSURANCE COMPANY, LIMITED. The progress made by the British Workman's and General Assurance Company continues to be of a most satisfactory order, for in every important department it is the pleasant task of the directors to report considerable expansion. Turning, in the first place, to the new business records, we find that during the past year no less than 79,062 new members have been secured at an additional new income of £ 70,758. The progress made by the industrial life assurance offices in this country is ore of the most reassuring features of the age. The record of this Company alone of 80,000 new members as the result of one year's efforts- is sufficiently striking. The number of policies issued in the ordinary department last year was 9,045, covering the sum of £ 423.342. In the industrial department the number of policies issued was 461,031, at an annual premium income of £ 303,969. Turning to the amount paid in claims, the outgo in the Ordinary Department was £51,522. including Al,580 in surrenders in the Industrial branch the sum of £ 292.947 was paid, including £10,922 in surrenders. The total amount paid during the year, therefore, was £344,469, which sum exceeded that of the previous year by £32,261, and included £ 69,006 under maturing endowment and endowment assurance policies, over £ 288,000 having been paid in these two classes alone during the last five years. It is interesting to note that the claims paid by the Company from the.date of its formation up to December 31 last amounted to no less than £ 3,532,132. Whilst a constantly increasing business necessitates a constant increase in the expenditure for expenses and commissions, it is gratifying to find that the ratio of the same to the premium income is steadily diminishing, The outgo under this heading in 1902 was £ 329,830, or 40 1 per cent. The total result of the year's working was as follows :—Income, £ 860,945 payments, je674,299 surplus, £ 186,646. The British Workman's has now over a year's income in hand, the increase in the funds during the past year being the largest ever made by the Company in a similar period. The Company has earned a reputation for generosity in its treatment of policyholders,and the promptitude with which claims have been paid has repeatedly been brought to our notice, and in many cases the claims have been ptid on the same date as death occured. The Company certainly has never been in a stronger financial position than that which it occupies at the present time, and all connected with the institution are to be congratulated upon the gratifying results contained in the thirty-seventh annual report recently published. 7 SOCAL CRICKET. BARRY DOCK v. MID-RHONDDA (GLAMORGAN LEAGUE) This match, one of the best on the card, was played on the Tonypandy Recreation Ground on Saturday last before a good crowd of people. The visitors, winning the toss, elected to bat first, F. Sadler and F. Bartle going first to the wickets, being opposed by the Rev J. Goodridge and Alf Evans. Twenty runs were put on for the first wicket, when Bartle was splendidly caught and bowled. W. Westall filled the vacancy, and at once commenced to hit, the score being taken to 36 before Sadler was bowled by Walters, who had relieved Evans. Westall shortly after retired in the same way, the score at this point being 39. Laws and Kinsley then quickly raised the total to 57. After the former had been beaten by Goodridge, Kinsley and Quinnell carried the score to 72, Kinsley, who had hit splendidly, being then caught in the long field. At this point a large score seemed probable, but both bowlers were keeping an excellent length, and the remaining wickets fell for the addition of 14 runs. G. Waters livening matters up with a well hit — 10 not out. The score eventually reached 86. Goodrich (6 for 30) and R. C. Walter (4 for 29) bowled wonderfully well. The home team commenced in grand form, as after Gwilym Davis-their best bat-had been bowled by Sadler for two, Ike Edmunds and Alf Evans raised the total to 30 before being parted. On Walter join- ing Evans, another long stand was made, the score being 53 when the third wicket fell. From this point a rot set in, five wickets going down for seven runs but D. R. James and G. Rowlands came to the rescue, and carried the total to 80 before being parted. The visitors were not fully represented, whilst the Newportonians bad got together a very strong side. Winning the toss, the visiting team elected to bat first on a good wicket, but early disasters had a bad influence on the batting, and the whole side were dismissed for the insignificant total of 29 runs C. Hews bowling very successfully for the homesters, bagging six victims for 18 runs. The Uaksiders passed Dinas Powis' total with nine wickets in hand, and the venture realised the respectable score of 104 runs. The chief contributors for the homesters were W. W. Massey (14), D. J.
