THE LATE MR HENRY THOMAS.—The funeral of the late Mr Henry Thomas, engineer, of 91, Dock View-road, Barry Docks, son-in-law of Mr T. Hopkin, Bassett Arms Hotel, took place at Pen- mafk on Saturday afternoon last, the officiating clergyman being the Rev Percy Mortimer, M.A., rector. The coffin, which was of panelled English oak, was covered with floral tributes from relatives and friends. The funeral arrangements were carried out in a satisfactory manner by Messrs James Jones and Company, Holton-road, Barry Docks. HOLTON ROAD ENGLISH BAPTIST SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY.—Special services in connection with the anniversary of the Sunday School of Holton-road English Baptist Chapel, Barry Docks, will be held on Sunday next. The preacher both morning and evening, will be the Rev J. M. Jones, of Newbridge. In the afternoon, at 2.30, there will be a children's service, Councillor J. A. Manaton, J.P., chairman of the District Council presiding, and a programme of dialogues, recitations, singing, &c.. will be rendered. Mr T. S. Williams, will be the conductor, and Mr G. MKS.GfiUHDY'S JOTTINGS. A deputation of the Barry Free Church Council has this week waited upon Mr W. P. Phillips and Councillor J. A. Manaton, the overseers of the poor for the parish of Barry, asking them to accept part payment of the rate, thus enabling a practical protest to be made against the local administration of the Education Act. The overseers are con- sidering their legal position in the matter. In connection with the plans competition for the new Reading Rooms at Cadoxton, it was stated in our last issue that the second best plans were those of Mr W. E. Knapman, and the third those of Mr J. A. Owen. This was not correct, and the Libraries' Committee consider the plans submitted by the gentlemen named to be of equal merit. Mr H. B. Winfield, the captain of the Cardiff Football Club and Welsh international, is at present living at Barry Island. Already more than twenty entries have been received for the Barry Coaltrimmers' walk on Saturday week, and several valuable prizes have been promised. The competitors are in active training, and are doing the distance daily. A list of competitors will appear in our next issue. The reception of Miss E. Price Hughes, M.A,, one of the vice-presidents of the Barry District Educational Society, on her return home from Japan, will take place at Hannah-street Council Schools, Cadoxton, this evening (Friday), at 7.30. There was a vigorous contest between the Barry District Council, endeavouring to conduct its business at the Gas Offices last Monday evening, and Mr Danter's steam organ playing classic music outside. Eventually harmony supervened, for Mr Danter consented to hush the organ for an hour, and asked the Council to hurry up. The heel-aifd-toe fever has reached Barry. The mechanical employees of the Barry Railway Com- pany intend holding a prize walk next Saturday week, for which there is already a good entry. The course in this instance will be practically the same as the coal-trimmers, but to prevent clashing the start in this race will be made from Broad- street at an earlier hour. There is in the Barry district at the present time a coloured man named Archer who was one of those who had represented Manhatten Island against Dr W. G. Grace's All England Eleven in 1896. Lady Wilde, mother of Dr Neville Wilde, of Barry Docks, is at present spending a summer holiday at Barry. Mr A. D. Mein, Barry, was one of the com- petitors in the Coal Exchange walk to Porthcawl last Saturday. The directors of the Barry Railway Company have declined to receive the proposed joint deputa- tion of the Barry District Council and Cham-ber of Trade with reference to the necessity of increased dry dock accommodation at Barry. Councillor J. L. Davies and Mrs Davies, Cadoxton, have been summering since Whitsuntide at Whitland and Goodwick. A Church Parade of the 2nd Glamorgan Royal Garrison Artillery (Volunteers) will be held next Sunday morning at St. Paul's Church, Barry. The Regimental Band will attend, By an extraordinary coincidence, the Chairman of the Barry District Council gave his casting vote last Monday evening with musical honours, for just as Mr Manaton proclaimed himself in favour of the formation of a new road from Barry to Holton Farm, and the abandonment of the old love-lane, Mr Danter's unsentimental steam organ blurted forth the opening strains of Good-bye, Dolly, I must leave you." Mr Tom Gratorex, the late captain of the Barry Quoit Club, and holder of the Welsh Quoit Championship, is expected home on annual leave from West Africa on the 18th of July, and he will probably play in the final for the South Wales and Monmouthshire League Championship at Merthyr on the 25th. In view of the forthcoming vacancy of headship at Holtsn-road Infants' School, Barry Docks, it is expected that, following the example recently set in the case of Holton-road Boys' School, the appointment will be divided, and two head teachers will be chosen. Mr James Holmes, the organiser of the Amal- gamated Society of Railway Servants, has been adopted as Labour candidate for the Eastern Division of Birmingham in opposition to Sir Benjamin Stone, the present Conservative member. During the past week the coaltrimmers of Barry have been training hard for the walking competi- tion on Saturday week. Mr T. J. Chamberlain, of the Barry Dock News Offices, attended, as delegate of the Cardiff and Barry district, the quinquennial delegate meeting of the Typographical Society held in Birmingham a fortnight ago. Giving evidence in an assault case at Penarth Police-court last Wednesday, a witness, who described himself as a school-master, referred to the boys at the truant school performing their oblations. He probably meant their ablutions. Barry has had the novel experience during the past week of seeding coals to Newcastle, for on Saturday the steamer Coronilla left Barry Docks with a full cargo of coal for the well-known Tyne port. Mr Dsnrid Davies, Llandinam, one of.the directors of the Barry Railway Company, is suggested as probable Liberal candidate for Merthyr Boroughs at the next General Election. The mechanic who was recently removed to the Barry Isolation Hospital, suffering from small-pox, contracted whilst working on board ship at Barry Docks with a man from an infected house at Cardiff, has this week been discharged sonvalescent. Another case has, however, appeared in the district this week, the patient being a little girl named Evans, and both mother and child have been removed to the Isolation Hospital.

WOMAN'S SUDDEN DEATH AT CADOXTON-BARRY. A woman named Thbry Anne Brooks, aged 68, wife of Joseph Brooks, a roadman in the employ of the Barry Urban District Council, died with painful suddenness on Sunday afternoon last. She was in her own house, at 33, Lee-road, Cadoxton- Barry, and was clearing up after dinner, when she suddenly fell, and died almost immediately. Failure of the heart's action was, in the opinion of Dr P. J. O'Donnell, the cause of death, An inquest was held at Cadoxton Police Station on Tuesday afternoon, and Dr O'Donnell having given it as his opinion that death was due to fatty degeneration of the heart, a verdict accordingly was returned.
