Council meeting at 7.30 executive at 7. MOUNT PLEASANT ANNIVERSARY.—Mr A. W. Morris, Cardiff, conducted the anniversary services at Mount Pleasant English Baptist Chapel, Cadox- ton, on Whit-Sunday, and preached to good con- t gregations both morning and evening. The choir, conducted by Mr J. Lewis Jones, sang special selections at each service. PUBLIC TEA AND LECTURE AT CALFARIA.— At Calfaria Welsh Baptist Chapel, Oadoxton, oil Whit-Tuesday afternoon, a well-attended public tea was held and in the evening the Rev Charles Davies, Tabernacle, Cardiff, delivered his popular lecture on The Pilgrim's Progress." Mr A. T. Abel, Cardiff, presided. THE PARISH CHURCH CONCERT.—In our report last week of the concert held at the Theatre Royal. Cadoxton, on Wednesday evening, in aid of the funds of St. Oadoc's Church, the name of Miss L. Pugh, Cadoxton, should have been in- cluded amongst the artistes. Miss Pugh took part in place of Miss Dilys Joseph-Parry, and her excellent rendering gave entire satisfaction. JUVENILE SUITS A SPECIALITY. — All the popular styles. SMOKING CONCERT AT THE CONSERVATIVE CLUB. — A grand smoking concert was held on Friday evening last at the Conservative Club and Institute, Barry Docks, under the presidency of Mr George Wareham, who was supported by Messrs J. A. Lovat-Fraser, B. A.L., A. Lewis, J. Jones, W. Davies, an £ others, An excellent programme of music was rendered by Mr Jimmy Shields' Troupe (Messrs Tony Iveson, Teddy Wilkes, and Joe Conley), Messrs T.Jones, Dai Morgan, W. Saunders, P. Deere, and T. Scott, a very enjoyable musical evening concluding with the singing of the National Anthem. PRESENTATION.—On Friday afternoon last, at the Barry Railway Offices, the presentation of a clock was made by the staff to Mr James Hunter, of the Secretary's Department, who is leaving to join the South Wales Electrical Power Co., Cardiff. Mr Rimell, of the Secretary's staff, made the presentation. Speeches were also made by the assistant-manager., Mr H. J. Vincent, in whose department Mr Hunter formerly served, and also by Mr Raygens of the audit department. Mr Hunter is the well-known golfer of the Glamorgan club, and holder of the Welsh Golf Championship this year. SMOKER AT THE LIBERAL INSTITUTE.—A smoking concert took place in the Barry Dock Liberal Institute on Thursday evening last, when the distribution of tournament prizes to the win- ners also took place. Councillor J. A. Manaton, J.P., presided. The building was crowded, and the concert was a success. Those -who took part in- cluded Messrs H. Quiningborough, J. Burke, Wally Scott, Jimmy Shields, Joe Conley, Tony Iveson, Teddy Wilkes, Young Selby (Cardiff), Ringwald, the two Young Powers (of Barry Dock), D. R. Williams, W. Hocking, G. F. Foulkes, J. Miles, and J. J. McCutcheon. Mr. Manaton was thanked for presiding. The accompanists were Messrs E. Ryan. T. Iveson, and G. Wilkes. The tournament winners were Whist-C. Stevenson n' and W. Laws, W. COGAN. WHIT-MONDAY CHURCH SCHOOL TREAT.—The children of Llandough, Leckwith, and Cogan Church Sunday Schools, numbering about 400, were entertained on Whit-Monday at Erw'r Delyn, the residence of Mr and Mrs T. R. Thompson, who for many years have most generously given an annual treat to the children of these schools. The usual games were indulged in after tea. In the morning there was a celebration of the holy eucharist at Cogan Church, where the Rev F. E. Williams, M. A., rector, officiated.

THE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THE BARRY SCHEME. In a statement published by the Board of Edu- cation of schemes for the formation of education committees approved during April, 1903, is that of Barry. Regarding this, under the heading of li Forms of educational experience to be repre- sented on the committee," is the following:- 1; Persons of experience in education, and persons acquainted with the needs of the various kinds of schools in the district. One of the governors of Barry County School appointed by the Council, a member of the Glamorganshire County Council. The commercial and industrial conditions of the district. One member, after consultation with the University College of Cardiff (only after 30th April. 1904).

MIDNIGHT ROMANCE AT BARRY ISLAND. SINGULAR EXPERIENCE OF A GIRL SOMNAMBULIST. About midnight on Sunday last a man named Sydney Bennet, of 11, Phillis-steet, Barry Island, was going home from the docks when he saw a little girl, aged about five, clad only in her night- dress, walking about in the Triangle near the Marine Hotel. He took the child to his home, and Mrs Ben'nett having questioned the little one, she was only able to say that her name was Lee, and that she belonged to Cardiff. She was put to bed, and Police constable Shillum (350) was apprised of the circumstance. About two hours later information was brought to the Police-station that a child was missing from No. 70, Phyllis- street, the little one's clothes having been found in the passage and the bed in which the child was placed about nine o'clock was empty. The child, whose parents live at Cardiff, and was spending Whitsuntide at Barry Island, was restored to her friends. The little one is subject to fits of somnambulism.

WELSH LIBERALS AND THE EDUCATION ACT. CONVENTION AT CARDIFF THIS WEEK. The Welsh National Convention to consider the administration of the Education Act in Wales and Monmouthshire was held at Cardiff on Wednesday last. Mr Albert Spicer presided, and several Welsh members of Parliament were present, as well as representatives of political organisations, the County Councils, and Free Church Councils. A resolution was carried declaring that the Act violated the principle of public control of public expenditure, and endorsing the opinion of the County Councils Conference at Swansea that they ought not to levy the rate for that reason. PILFERING AT BARRY READING ROOM. At Penarth Police Court on Wednesday last— before Mr J. S. Batchelor and Colonel Thornley- an old man named James Powers, who had the appearance of a seaman, was brought up in custody charged with stealing a newspaper from the shelves at Barry Reading Room on the previous day. The man was seen by Edward Chilcott, the caretaker, to take the paper from a rack, and he was shortly afterwards arrested by the police on a charge of theft.-Prisoner said he was under the impression that the paper was an old one, and he took it to pack up a parcel with.-Powers was fined 5s for tke offence, in default a week's hard labour.

NEW CHURCH OF ST. MARY, BARRY DOCKS. CONTRACT LET FOR £ 6,000. The tender of Mr A. W. Cadwallader, builder, Cardiff, at £5,958 18s, has been accepted for the erection of the New Church of St. Mary, Holton- road, Barry Docks. The building will be carried out from plans prepared by Mr G. E, Halliday, architect, Cardiff, and will provide accommoda- tion for 650 worshippers. The other tenders sent in were those of Mr H. S. Rendell, Barry Docks £ 6,368 89 Messrs Lloyd and Tape, Barry Docks, £6,410 19s 2d; Mr W. Britton, Barry Docks, £ 6,536 15s 7a and Mr Alban Richards, Barry, £ 7,098. The new church will be completed in twelve months.

j BARRY RIFLE CLUB. The Outdoor Range of the Barry Rifle Club was opened for the first time this season on Saturday last. The range will now be open every Saturday afternoon, from 2.30. A brake leaves the Indoor Range in Broad-street, Barry, at 2.18, on the arrival of the Cardiff train. Persons desirous of joining the club should communicate with the secretary, Mr F. P. Jones-Lloyd, solicitor. The first shoot of three series for the National Rifle Association Bronze Medal will take place on Saturday next, in connection with Barry Rifle Club, at the Waycock Range. The winner to be decided on the two best scores out of the three. Members who intend to compete should give in their names 1 to Mr A. T, Hammond, 14, Romilly-road, Barry.

BARRY AMATEUR ROWING CLUB. The members of the Barry Amateur Rowing Club held a successful •' At Home at their Boat- house, Coldknap, Barry, on Saturday week last, when there was a large attendance of members and friends, and a very pleasant afternoon was spent at the club-house and in the boats. On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, 26th and 27th ultimo, some good four-oared races were held for prizes presented by the club. In the heats Mr Hansen's crew beat Mr Wilcock's crew by about two lengths, Mr Mein's crew being beaten by Mr Brown's crew by half a length. The final between Mr Hansen's crew and Brown's crew was very exciting, the crews being well matched, Mr Hansen's crew winning by less than two feet. The club presented each of the members of the winning crew, which consisted of Messrs S. W. Hansen, W. W. Thomas, A. E. F. Henderson, and and P. Gabe, with an order for a club blazer, Mr A. D. Mein and Mr A: E. F. Henderson have each presented the club with a challenge cup, which will be rowed for in pair-oared outrigged boats this month, the winners to take the cups outright. The Annual Regatta will be held on Wednesday, July 22nd. We understand the club is in a very flourishing condition.

GAVE HIMSELF UP AT BARRY. On Sunday evening last Frank Dollman gave himself up to the police at Barry stating he was a deserter from the Royal Field Artillery stationed at Woolwich. At a special sitting of the Barry Police Court on Tuesday evening—before Mr J. A. Manaton-Dollman was handed over to an escort to be taken back to barracks to be dealt with by the military authorities.
