BARRY POLICE COURT. FRIDAY. Before Mr J. Duncan and Mr J, A. Manaton, WARRANT FOR ALLEGED THEFT. A warrant was ordered to be issued for the appearance of Frank Brown, of Barry, summoned for stealing a quantity of growing vegetables from the garden of J?mes Baglin on the evening of the 18th ultimo. NO CONTROL. Fines of 5s each were imposed upon William James and William Durbin for being at such a distance as not to have control over their horses and carts. DONKEYS ASTRAY. Thomas Edwards, Cadoxton, was mulct in 2s 6d for allowing two donkeys to stray on the highway. NO DOG LICENSE. For keeping a dog without a license, John Thomas, Barry, was fined 7s 6d. BROTHERS CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING THE POLICE. Dennis and James Tobin, brothers, of Hirwain- street, Barry Docks, who were defended by Mr Alfred Jackson, solicitor, were charged on adjourn- ment with assaulting the police. P.C. David Lewis (171) said about ten o'clock on the night of the 12th ultimo he saw James Tobin in Holton- road. He was drunk and creating a disturbance. He advised him to go away, but he refused to go, and said, You have been looking for trouble, and you will get it just now." He again requested Tobin to go away, but he refused, and he took him into custody, when he beeame very violent, seized the constable by the collar of his serge tunic and broke it. He also butted him with his head in the stomach and chest. Dennis then came upon the scene, and rushing forward struck him on the mouth, and kicked him to the ground. Whilst he was on the ground both defendants kicked him, and in attempting to rise Dennis kicked him in the stomach. The crowd got around them, and he (witness) was hustled about and pushed to the side of the road, and the defendants were pushed to the other side of the road. Both men then got away.—Cross-examined,. Lewis said previous to this Dennis Tobin had taken James home. He admitted giving James a slight push when telling him to go away.-For the defence, Dennis Tobin said he had once taken his brother home, and was taking him home the second time when the constable came and took him into custody. He denied either striking or kicking the constable, but his brother butted him in the stomach with his head. After the row he gave the constable his handcuffs, which had fallen in the scuffle with his brother.—James Cain, Richard Slocombe, and Harry Applebee corroborated the evidence given by Dennis Tobin and the Bench, having con- sidered the ca=w, Mr Duncan said it was a wonder that the policeman had escaped so lightly from the hands of so powerful a man as James Tobin. He might have dealt him serious injury. The police- man had acted within his rights. James Tobin would be sent to prison for a month with hard labour. In the case of Dennis Tobin the police unfortunately, in the interests of justice, did not call evidence to corroborate the testimony of the constable. There was a dou.,t in the case, and fortunately for him the defendant was entitled to the benefit of that doubt, and having been cautioned he was dismissed. Dennis Tobin was then charged with disorderly conduct on the highway, to which he pleaded guilty, and the Bench imposed a fine of 10s. BOATMEN FIGHTING. Two boatmen, William Young and David Rees, were summoned for being guilty of disorderly conduct by fighting in Dock View-road.—Young said he was struck in the face by Rees. Rees, however, stated he was provoked to do it.-Rees was fined 5s, and Young cautioned. WOMAN TO COME UP. A warrant was ordered to be issued for the appearance of Ellen Burfort on a similar charge. RUNNING UP A RECORD. Lawrence Furlong, who has lately returned from a sea voyage, is running up a record at the local court. There were already several convictions against him, two within the past month. The Bench now sent him to prison for fourteen days for being drunk and disorderly. DRUNKS CONTINUED. The other persons charged with being drunk and disorderly were dealt with as follows :— Joseph French, Arthur Manning, Henry Cowell, Michael Burke, John Thomas, and Patrick Smith, who were fined 7s 6d each and John Mackenzie, Thomas Watson, Ernest Cottrell, and Edward Taylor, 5s each.

QUOITS: BARRY V. WATTS- TOWN. Barry Quoit Club, the South Wales and Mon- mouthshire medallists, were at home on Saturday afternoon last to Wattstown, and, in their second league encounter this season, aiforded the visitors an object lesson in the form of a record defeat, Barry winning the match by 120 points. The homesters were in the top of form, and the entire team gave an excellent demonstration of the popular pastime, securing full points in each instance. The individual scores were BARRY. WATTSTOWN. The Cycling World. j -:0:- As a preventative of the unpleasant attention of flyg and gnats when cycling, a lady's paper recommends the rubbing of a strong decoction of tobacco over the face! A care most girls would dread more than the evil it seeks to alleviate, and the idea of a lady reeking with tobacco juice would choke off her friends as well as the flies. Quite as good a fly-bane is the use of a little eucalyptus the odour of which is not so objection- able. If the tyres should deflate very slowly it may or it may not be a small puncture, which often baffles the most diligent searching. Indeed, even the water test may be resorted to without success. If, after thorough examination no puncture is discovered, look to the valve. It may be that if the valve be of the locking variety it has become slightly unscrewed, with a consequent leakage. The most reliable valve is a non-return one like the Woods. It forms a perfectly air-tight joint, and will prove by far the most satisfactory. Inter-team cycle racing is becoming very popular, especially amongst the members of the Polytechnic C.C. Indeed, the number of appli- cations for places in the club's teams are so numerous, that six riders have been included in each of the four teams, instead of four riders as originally selected. The first contest of the season will take place on Thursday, at the Crystal Palace track, when "A" and "B teams will compete. The full teams are as follows: (A) A. L. Reed,- Calder, Nagler, Cole, Rickett, and Gv Apsey. (B) A. J. Cherry, Bailey, King, Apsey, .Kirton, and Oppenheim. (C) S. Janson, Albury, Harding, Minors, Nowell, Salmon, and Arbon. (D) A.- S.- Ingram,, Johne, Poncione, Kelly, Monteillet, and Sigrist. These team races undoubtedly have a beneficial influence on young riders, especially with novices who are not accustomed to the amenities of track riding, and the novice who does not improve, both in speed and judgment under such conditions, cannot be of much account. The cars which the English representatives will drive in the race in Ireland will be far more powerful than those which did duty in the elimin- ating contests at Welbeck. In fact Stock's car will be the most powerful yet built, the engine indicating 110 h.p., and attaining the terrific speed of over 100 miles an hour. The probability of such a speed being reached is not probable, nor will it be necessary. The chief characteristic of the new car will be its ability to get under weigh quickly on the top speed, and such an important feature, where thirty or forty stops will have to be made, will count for a good deal, and will probably make all the difference between winning and losing. Furthermore, the speed up hill will also reach the maximum, even on the steepest inclines. The measurements of the new car may prove interesting. The wheel base is 8 ft. 6 in., and guage 4 ft. 6 in., the weight of the car being just under a ton. A distinct improvement will be the avoidance of the tendency of the back wheel to I- kick up," as the weight of the machine has been carried well to the rear. • The car has been appropriately named Defender," and J.. W. Stocks will, in all probability, drive it,- although it was originally intended for Edge himself. A very successful non-stop run of motor-cars and motor-bicycles from Glasgow to London took place last week. The distance is over 400 miles, and perhaps the most wonderful feature of the journey was the performance of the motor- bicycles., It is natural enough in these days of reliable motor-cars, that the automobile should be able to traverse the journey with no attention to the mechanism whatever, or replenishment of the tanks, but it is really marvellous that & little machine like a motor-bicycle should accomplish the long distance without the slightest mishap, and it proves to what a degree of excellence the 2 h.p. and 2i h.p. engine has been brought.. This is an-object lesson which the military authorities would do well to ponder over. Many of the Volunteer corps have taken up motor cycling, and a Volunteer Motor Corps has been formed; and these, no doubt, will eventually form the most useful arm of the service. In Ireland the police j authorities have formed a motor-cycling corps for escorting the Lord Lieutenant when travelling the country per motor-car, and when the King visits the Emerald Isle, in July or August, these mounted police will act as escorts on his Majesty's motoring trips.. Now that the warm weather is approaching, the thirst question becomes an important one to cyclists, and in fact to everyone who is exposed to the parching rays of the sun. An old time drink, and one that is seldom asked for now by men on the road, is egg and lemonade. An egg should be first well beaten up and the lemonade poured on while stirring. This makes a delicious thirst quencher, and a stimulating beverage, Try it! The rider who has had a bad side-slip,, when he comes on a greasy patch often becomes over-careful. He has constantly before him the serious conse- quences of a very sudden fall. On the other hand the rider who has never side-slipped is often disposed to underrate the consequences of a fall from this cause. To be on the safe side a good pair of non-slipping bands is the remedy. A device that gives the machine the most stability,, is the Dunlop band, and in addition it considerably prolongs the life of a tyre. The winner of the thirteenth annual Bordeaux- Paris race, Aucouturier, is only in his twenty- seventh year, having been born at Commentry in 1876. For six years he has devoted his attention to cycle racing, meeting in that time with a con- siderable amount of success. In 1900, be finished fifth in the Bordeaux-Paris event, and in the following year, second to Lucien Lesna. In the Paris-Brest raoe of the same year he gained third position, arriving at the half-way point in company with the winner—Maurice Garin. Besides his win in the Bordeaux-Paris race, Aucoutnrier won the Paris-Roubaix race earlier in the season. A DAILY OCCURRENCE. — New cures resulting

At a special sitting at Penarth Police-court en Saturday last, Thomas Lloyd, living at 30, Grove- terrace, Penarth. was charged with stealing £ 2 from his father's bedroom on the previous night. P.C. Wilcocks deposed that he was called to the house about 11.30, and fouLd prisoner very vivleufc. Lloyd had broken all the front windows, and he (the constable) had to obtain assistance to convey him to the Police-station. When charged, Liloyd stated that be took the money to get On being remanded till Wednesday, Lloyd asked the magistrates if he could have a pint #{ beer.—Mr I Batchelor What what A pint of water would do you more good.—It is needles to that the, request was not granted.

Of course a man may be too cautious-he who always hesitates before doing a thing often gets left behind his fellows. To get insured against accident or burglary is commendable cantion. Mrs Ada French, a Swansea woman, has a means of protecting her- self which should commend itself to all readers, writes a Herald of Wales representative. The life of Mrs French, who lives at 7, Mysydd-road, Swansea, was once saved by Dr Williams' pink pills for pale people, and Mrs French now keeps a box of the medicine by her in ease of emergen- cies." Interviewed by a representative of the Herald of 11 ales, Mrs French said "My trouble commenced about ten years ago. with pains in the back and chest. I thought I was suffering from merely a temporary indisposi- tion, but the pains continued to increase and to extend to other parts of my body, and at last I had to consult a doctor. I used to have severe nervous attacks and terrible headaches. I was so nervous that I could not even stand the shock of cold water. My ordinary work at home was a burden I was fatigued walking from one room to another- everything in fact seemed a trouble to me. For five months I never saw the outside of the house, and was so exhausted that the only way I could get about the kitchen was by placing my knee on a chair, and using it as a sort of support. They cured my wife, and you'll find they'll cure you.' His wife, I may say, had been laid up for many weeks with dropsy, and her death at one time was expected almost hourly. After taking them I found my food much more palatable, and as I was enabled to digest it properly, my strength began to increase. THE LATE MR W. V. HUNTLEY WELSH ST. DONAT'S. PAINFULLY SUDDEN DEATH AT CARDIFF. Mr W. V. Huntley, of Welsh St. Donat's, near Cowbridge, and one of the best known figures in Glamorgan agricultural circles, died suddenly at Cardiff, on Thursday, the 28th ult. He had entered the office of Mr J. Richard Thomas, auctioneer and valuer, Quay-street, to transact some business, and seemed in fairly good health. He was chatting with a clerk, and the latter remarked upon his improved appearance, to which Mr Huntley replied that he did not feel much better. Nevertheless, he was in his usual buoyant spirits, but suddenly he collapsed, and as he lay upon the floorit was e-- .dent that life had departed, Dr Martin was at once called in, and stated that apoplexy was the cause of death. Mr Huntley had previously had three apoplectic s:izaro=, and bad been attended by Dr Moynan. of Cowbridge. He leaves a son and tlaree daughters, one of the latter being Mrs W. Thomas, The Hayes, Sully;, and another Mrs Ed ward Williams, of Wainsill Cottage, Cadoxton, Barry. He was churchwarden at Welsh St. Donat's for 49 years, and a member of the Cardiff Board of Guardians for 47 years. No mem- ber of the latter body had a longer period of service to his credit than Mr Huntley, and he was for some years father of the house. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Parish Churchyard of Welsh St. Donat's, and was largely attended by the gentry, farmers, and general public of the district.

THE SONS OF TEMPERANCE ANNUAL MEETINGS. This organisation held its annual meetings this week at Huddersfield. The representatives largely outnumber those of any previous year. The Cardiff Grand Division is represented by Bros. J Padfield, G.W.P.; H. F. Brown, P.G.W.P. J. P. Panniers, P.G.W.P. (Barry) M. Derrick, and H. Boon. The year just concluded has been one of phenomenal progress. The net increase of members for the year are-adults, 5,120 ^making a total increase for the first two years of the twentieth century of 10,021) and juveniles, 7,452. The present mem- bership stands at 59.308 adults and 33,381 juveniles, and an effort is being made to bring the total up to 100,000 by the end of the current year. The sickness returns shows that 24-2 of those entitled to sick pay were in receipt oi same, and their sickness averaged 28'2 days per I-ick member, or 7-9 days for each contributing member. In conjunction with the mortality return, which shows 5-8 per J,000, this is a splendid testimony to teetotal lives. The membership stands at 1,372 sons and 427 cadets, with consolidated benefit funds amounting to £ 3.448.
