THE KING'S DINNER TO THE LONDON…
THE KING'S DINNER TO THE LONDON POOR. ALL the circumstances in which the King's dinner to the poor was held contributed to its success. To say that there was no criticism would be to declare the advent of the millennuim, and of course there were people who thought that in a few respects the function might have been improved. It was said, for instance, that an attempt had been made to feed too many people with the King's £ 30,000, that an aggregate of half-a- million guests was a little too large. No doubt if the £ 30,000 had been all the means available, there would have been some force in the objection, but it is well-known that a number of large firms had supplemented the King's, bounty by gifts in kind, and indeed to such an extent had this taken place that some humorist suggested that the feast should be announced as the gift of the King and Co." Another objection, which had some- thing in it, was to the effect that while really poor people had been neglected, at the same time others receiving as much as £2 a week, had received tickets. If one enquires whose fault that was, it must be answered that it was almost entirely the fault of the particular guests. An attempt was made to deal with the question on the basis that no person earning more than a certain wage should be eligible, but the Committees could not be expected to hold a local inquiry into the circumstances of each candidate. They were compelled to some extent to leave the matter to the applicant's honour, and if some of them had neither honour or self respect that was not the fault of the King or of those who gave their time and labour to make the dinner a success. And a success it certainly was. If there was some little criticism there was no grumbling, and one might have looked in vain for a diner of the type of Thackeray's "Captain Shindy," who had been known to throw all the Club in an up-roar about the quality of his mutton chop." No, every- body had come with the intention of feeling pleased, and the smiling faces, and the hearty cheers, which greeted the Royal visitors, shewed that the guests were in the highest spirits. The weather was of the best that a delightful- if somewhat late summer could afford; the helpers worked with the diligence and will which characterises most volunteers, and it was an extremely happy circumstance that only that morning the doctors in attendance upon the Royal founder of the feast had felt justified in declaring that hit Majesty was now out of danger." One knows how carefully and how guardedly these bulletins are framed, and it was evident from the enthusiasm which the reading of the announcement evoked, that the King's guests realised the significance of the document. Their cheers witnessed to their very real satisfaction, and to the personal popularity of the monarch who had given so freely from his private purse in order that his poorer subjects might share in the rejoicings with which it had been intended to celebrate the Coronation. The stability of the Throne had been assured by Queen Victoria for a good many years to come,. and if there were any present at the King's dinner who doubted the wisdom of a Monarchial form 'of government they must have gone away convinced that there was no prospect of a change during their lifetime. That everything went so smoothly was an eloquent witness to the judgment and hard work which had been brought to bear upon the function by those who were responsible for its management. Take, for example, the entertainment of nearly 14,000 persons in one open space, at Fulham Palace, or the gathering of 10,500 under a single roof at Islington, and we see at once that success could only be assured by the most masterly direction, and a loyal adherence on the part of the helpers to the rules which had been framed.
MISS JENNER AND THE CADOXTON…
MISS JENNER AND THE CADOXTON BARRY LIVING. Miss Gertrude Jenner, of Wenvoe, writes asking us to state that, in accordance with her well- known privileges," and after mature deliberation upon such deeds as govern the matter, she has exercised her prerogative and offered to nominate the Rev Frank Williams, B.A., curate of St. Mary's, Barry Docks, as the new rector of Cadoxton-Barry, at the same time informing him that she fears, from her knowledge of events, that a good deal of litigation must arise before the question can be definitely settled. Miss Jenner intends lodging details of the matter before her learned friend, Mr Arthur Lewis, the Bishop's secretary, feeling that she has a clear and explicit duty to perform towards all parties implicated. Miss Jenner adds —" I have been materially strengthened in making the nomination by the remarkable feeling of the people in favour of Mr Williams."
