—\ IMPORTANT NEW WORKS AT…
— IMPORTANT NEW WORKS AT BARRY DOCK. AN advertisement published in another column of the Barry Dock News this week announces that the directors of the Barry Railway Company have decided to apply for tenders for the construction of a deep-water lock at Barry Dock forthwith. Considerable interest is felt in this work by the public generally on account of the material and ex- ceptional advantages which it will supply. A few detailed particulars of the scheme will, therefore, no doubt, be read with eagerness. The proposed lock will be about 600ft. in length by about 65ft. in width, aud will immediately adjoin the existing dock entrance and basin. The actual site of the lock is between the-7 basin and the new graving dock at present in course of construction. The lock will have three pairs of gates, the distance between the first and second pairs being 400ft., and between the second and third pairs, 269ft. The sill will be 52ft. 9in. below high water ordinary spring tides, and 12ft. below the centre of the sill of the present entrance, or 14ft. lower than the working height of the same sill. The sill of the lock at the dock end will be stepped up to the extent of about 12ft. The channel between the present breakwater heads and the entrance to the new lock is to be deepened by dredging, and a timber jetty, 600ft. in length, is to be built on the west side of the channel next the lock entrance. The second breakwater, at present formed of open timber gantry, will also be closed up into a rubble mound to the land, like the upper breakwater, by means of small stone hearting, with large stonework on the outside. This will prove a great advantage to the dock entrance. The lock, when completed, will enable vessels even of heavy tonnage to pass in and out of the dock practically at all states of the tide, an advantage which has never „ been enjoyed by any other dock in the Bristol Channel. The directors announce that draw- ings and specifications of the work can be seen on and after Wednesday, the 14th instant, at the offices of the consulting engineer to the company, Mr J. Wolfe Barry, M.Inst.C.E., at 21, Delahay-street, Westminster, London, where copies of the specification and form of tender may also be obtained. The tenders must be sent to the secretary of the Barry Company not later than noon on Saturday, the 14th of November, and inasmuch as the directors will consider and determine the same without delay, there is every reason to hope that the contractor will be able to com- mence execution of the work before the close of the present year. This will give employ- ment to about three hundred hands who would doubtless otherwise be out of work during the winter months.
