REVIEW OF PUBLICATIONS.
REVIEW OF PUBLICATIONS. "THE MEDICAL USES OF ELECTRICITY." The Medical Uses of Electricity is the title of a nicely got up treatise on the electropathic method of curing disease, from the pen of C. B. Harness, published for private circulation only, by the Medical Battery Co., London. The hand-book contains upwards of 100 pages, and treats with a large number of diseaes principally prevalent in this country. We would advise our readers to procure a copy, which can be obtained, together with another hand-book, of upwards of 150 pages, giving some hundreds of cases of complete cures which have been effected by simply wearing Harness's world-famed curative electropathic battery belt. To obtain these hand-books simply send a poso card, with your address, to the Medical Battery Company, 52, Oxford-street, London, W. "BLACK AND WHITE." A copy of Black and White, a weekly illustrated record, price 6d, by post 6d, published by Mr H. S. Wood, 63, Fleet-street, London, E.C., has been sent us for review. Black and White, the editor states, is the name chosen for the new illustrated weekly journal which appeared for the first time on the 6th of February last. For the last 21 years no illustrated journal of any impor- tance has been established in Great Britain. During that period the population of the English- speaking counties has largely increased, the taste for art has made rapid progress among all classes, the art of printing has been enormously improved, and an entirely new spirit has entered into jour- nalism. The directors of Black and White believe, therefore, that the time has come when the public will welcome a new illustrated paper-a paper of great mechanical, literary, and artistic excellence. This is really the gap which Black and White seeks to fill, and upon perusal of the copy before us we are fully convinced that it does and will fill this gap most efficiently. The illustrations are from the richest and finest departments of art, and complete pages are devoted to splendidly pourtrayed Royal Academy pictures. The ser- vices of a large number of men distinguished in art and literature have been secured for the pro- duction of Black and White, and although the venture is still in its infancy we can safely predict for this new illustrated journal a very bright and prosperous career. "PORTHCAWL AS A HEALTH RESORT." We have been favoured with a copy of a very prettily got-up and useful brochure, entitled "Porthcawl as a Health Resort," by Robert C. Hunter, M.R.C.S. (Engl.), L.R.C.P. (Edin.), &c., of Pontypridd. It is published at one shilling, by J. Wright and Co., Stone Bridge, Bristol; and will serve as an excellent and reliable guide to Porthcawl and district for all who frequent this truly delightful and charmingly secluded health resort. The work contains more than fifty pages of very interesting matter, dealing with every phase of information which can possibly be re- quired by the visitor to Porthcawl, including the rainfall for last year, water supply, facilities for shooting, fishing, bathing, boating, boarding, &c., the peculiar advantages of Porthcawl as an ex- ceptionally desirable health resort, together with comprehensive references to various places and objects of interest in the vicinity. The thanks of the public (especially those who live in the in- land towns and villages of Glamorgan), are due to Dr. Hunter for providing such a very handy and elaborate hand-book, containing as it does so much serviceable information with regard to a dis- trict in which, he avows, he has no selfish ends to promote, for, in course of a brief introduction to the work, Dr. Hunter explains his position as author in the, following terms:—"The writer having no personal interests to serve in Porthcawl, has, uninfluenced by personal considerations, but conscientiously believing in the advantages of this healtn-restoring seaside resort, with its pure air, open sea, health-giving downs, and invigorat- ing breezes, published this brochure with a sincere hope to make Porthcawl more generally appre- ciated." Dr. Hunter thanks Messrs Brogden, John Garsed, Charles Wilkins, Eustace Williams, and others for the loan of old boooks and manu- scripts which have been used in recording the ancient legends of the neighbourhood of Forth- eawL The hand-book contains a large mass of in- formation which is not generally known even to those who are comparatively well acquainted with Porthcawl. It is more than a guide, for it abounds in ancient lore, and besides the chapters on modern Porthcawl there are others on Roman Remains, Dunraven Castle, St. Donat's, Maid of Sker, Margam Abbey, and other interesting topics. The hotel accommodation of Porthcawl appears complete-the Esplanade, Porthcawl, Ship and Castle, Brogden, Queen's, White's, Cowley's, and others. In addition to the reading matter there is a map showing the coast of the Bristol Channel, from St. David's to Widemouth Bay, and the distance to Porthcawl from each of the places mentioned thereon may be ascertained by means of a scale, The subjects of the illustrations are the Esplanade Hotel and Terrace, The Rest, Bathing Bay and Black Rock, and Sandy Bay and Town. We specially commend the work to the large number of our readers who regularly pay holiday-visits to Porthcawl and neighbour- hood during the summer months.
BARRY AND CADOXTON FREE READING…
BARRY AND CADOXTON FREE READING ROOMS. Free reading rooms in connection with the pub- lic library movement in this district were formally thrown open to the pub'ic on Saturday morning last at High-street, East Barry Holton-road, Barry Dock and Main-snreet, Cadoxton, and we are glad to find that during the week they have been largely used by the general public. The ceremony at Cadoxton was peformed by Mr W. Thomas, auctioneer (president of the recreation rooms committee and member of the public libraries committee). A number of local gentle- men were present on the occasion, and much interest was felt in the proceedings. We are not aware that any ceremony took place in connection with the opening of either of the other rooms. We heartily wish the free reading rooms of the district every success, for we have all along felt that the literature of the day cannot be too freely and promiscuously placed at the disposal of the masses of the public, who will, we have no doubt, take full advantage of the facilities of reading now open to them.
LLANTWIT MAJOR.
LLANTWIT MAJOR. MINISTERIAL CALL--The Calvinistic Methodist Churches at Llantwit Major and Broughton have given a unanimous invitation to Mr William Davies, of Bankyfelin, Carmarthenshire, to be- come their pastor. Mr Davies' college career at Trevecca terminated last June. BAND OF HOPE.-The Rev O. Davies has started a band of hope in connection with Bethel Baptist Chapel.* There was a good muster at the first meeting. We wish the movement every success. VISITORS have been very numerous here of late, and there is plenty of life in the town. Not a day passes but brings its quantum of pleasure- seekers. Everything is done to make this grow- ing watering place attractive. BANK HOLIDAY.—This day was fine on the whole, but with a very cold stiff breeze blowing. There were more visitors here than ever seen before. Over 60 breaks brought visitors to the town. Canton Baptist Sunday School, with their minister (Rev J. W. Medhurst), put up at the Baptist Chapel. Close by, in the Wesleyan Schoolroom, were the teachers and choir of the Wesleyan Chapel, Cadoxton-Barry, accompanied by Mr W. J. Flowers, superintendent; Mr T. Davies, conductor; Mr J. Penglaze, organist and Mr T. Gear, secretary. At the White Lion were the Independents from Pontycwmmer and all the hotels and many private houses were also full. A great many spent the whole day on the beach. Before leaving, some of the choirs sang, and by about eight p.m. the place was com- paratively deserted.

THE DUKE AND THE TAILOR.
THE DUKE AND THE TAILOR. A STORY OF ACTUAL LIFE. The Duke of Bavaria, who went through all his medical studies, and earned his title of M.D. byexaminati jns as severe as any to which students of the lowest social degree are ever submitted, has obtained among his countrymen, if not celebrity as a medical practitioner, his legend as a hero of romance, which is less common, and of far more value in the eyes of the ladies of the court. It is not many years ago that the young Duke Michael of Bavaria was one of the gayest and most persistent students of the art of time-killing in all Paris. He had good looks and health, and money at his command. What more is needed to make life pass away in a pleasant dream 1 But Duke Michael grew after awhile satiated with pleasure, even varied as it is in Paris, and was about to depart for Rome, when a signal event turned the whole current of his life, and led him to reflect with remorse on the bright years he had been wasting in idleness. He had ordered a new dress-coat to attend a ball in the Faubourg, St. German; the tailor bad failed in his promise, and at the hour of attiring the coat was not there. In a fit of that dreadful rage from which every mortal on this earth, possessed of a nervous system, has suffered when affected by the like awful misfortune, Duke Michael dispatched his valet laden with bitterness and abuse to the tailor, bidding the waiter of the hotel tell the latter, should he bring the coat in the meantime, to deliver it at his room. No sooner had the valet departed than a feeble knock was heard at the door, and in stumbled a meek-looking elderly man, with the long-looked-for garment under his arm. We all know the epithets and expletives with which such a messenger is greeted by a hot-headed, impatient youth, no matter to what class of society he may belong, when the delay may result in the loss of that first dance," for which no sucrifice, save that of personal ap- pearance, would have been considered too great. To his astonishment the recipient of the torrent of wrath to which his highness gave utterance remained standing in the middle of the room, without further sign of emotion than the endeavour to excuse the delay by declaring humbly that his son, the tailor, had been seized with a dangerous illness at the very moment of leaving the house to wait upon his highness with the coat, and that in the confusion no one could be found to bring it but himself, and although entirely blind and helpless, rather than disappoint his highness he had consented to execute the errand. But the late hour, and the difficulty of finding the way, there being few people in the streets to guide him, had occasioned him to be later than otherwise he would have been. The Duke was disarmed; the interest of the story completely overwhelmed that of the coat and the ball, and even of the first dance." With the generous impulse of youth he insisted on leading the blind man back to his son's home, and spent a great portion of the night in watching by the bedside of the tailor and consoling the family. By this strange caprice he lost the ball and the eoveted "first dance;" but the gain was that of experience of the lives of other men, and an in- sight into other human woes than those arising from the failure of a tailor's punctuality and the breaking of an appointment for a ball. It was then that Duke Michael took the manly resolve to abandon the frivolous existence he had hitherto led and devote himself to a career of usefulness. He returned to Munich a wiser and a better man, and set to work with allthe ardor he had hitherto expended on pleasure. He is now considered as one of the most promising practitioners in the place, and there is some satisfaction in learning that he has just performed a most successful operation on the poor blind tailor, the first cause of all the change, whose cata- ract he has removed with the greatest skill, and who has since returned to Paris completely cured.

Bcii- dris (the home of the chieftain) a place of great antiquity and much archaeological interest is only 3 miles distant.
