This dock has been constructed at Barry Island (within the port of Barry) by colliery proprietors, freiglj ters, and shipowners to relieve the congested traffic at the Bute and Penarth Docks, the losset to shipowners in waiting in the roads to get intr dock, and when in dock in waiting for tips, quay berths, and other conveniences having during recent years been enormous. The dock is probably "j the largest and most commodious single dock in the world, and is capable of accommodating the largest vessels afloat without risk of beine, damaged. There is splendid anchorage tor the largest class of vessels in Barry Roads immediately outside the docks, and vessels frequenting the Barry Dock Trill avoid the difficulties and dangers of the crowded and narrow waters, and long artificial channels between Laveroock Point and the Penarth and Bute, Docks. In two minutes alter leaving the dock vessels will be in deep water and at sea. The railways of the company directly connect the dock with the celebrated Rhcndda, Aberdare. and Merthyr Valleys, and the districts producing the highest class Welsh Steam Coals, also with the rest of the Kingdom via the London and North- Western and the Great Western Railways. There is direct railway communication with the town oi Cardiff, and frequent service of trains. There are 11 high level coal staiths on the north eide of the dock. All these staiths are of sufficient height to allow of the bunkering of the largest steamers when light. There are nine low level ttaiths on the mole and west end. Th«* dock is also equipped with movable hydraulic staiths and cranes, and is fitted up with the most modern machinery and appliances for the purpose of fehipping coal with the greatest despatch and the least possible breakage, and at the most moderate cost. Hydraulic cranes are provided for the discharge of ballast and iron ore. All modern conveniences and appliances are provided. The dock being a tidal dock, it will be worked to the tide of the day, and all gates can be thrown Open at high water for the entry and departure of Vessels. A deep water lock, 80 feet wide, is about to be constructed, which will enable vessels to enter and leave the dock at almost any time. In addition to the dry dock accommodation already existing within the port of Cardiff, there will be at least two most modern and capacious dry docks in the Barry Dock a gridiron will also be provided. There are no Cardiff corporation, town, or har- bour dues payable at Barry. There will be great facilities for an import trade, to which nearly the whole of the south and east sides of the dock will be devoted. The timber pood has an area of 24 acres, and adjoins the dock.
