It is proposed to observe New Year's Day as a general holiday in Wrexham. I The annual show of the Wrexham and District Fanciers' Association was held in Wrexham on Saturday. The show was one of the most success- ful yet held by the Association. On Thursday, the Wrexham Rural District Council appointed two district surveyors—Mr W. Lee Walker, Wrexham, fcr the Northern division, and Mr Thomas Rees Evans, Dinorwic House, Johnstown, for the Southern. On the motion of the Chairman (Mr John Francis), the Wrexham Free Library Committee has appointed a sub-committee with a view of bettering the financial condition and arrangement of the institution, and for promoting means for increasing the income,

—: I MR. STANFORD'S CANDIDATURE. In view of the culmination of the fight some twelve months ago-a pleasant surprise to one party and rather a knock back for the other side —very considerable interest is centred in the present contest in the West Ward. As the time for polling approached, the con- fidence of the Liberals to retain the well-won seat has steadily grown, but on the other hand the Conservatives seem pretty sanguine that on this occasion they will be able to turn the tables. To accomplish what they desire, both sides are, and have been for days, working sternly and earnestly. On Wednesday evening a meeting in support of the candidature of Mr Stanford was held in Pentrcfelin Mission Room, and it augured well for the success of the candidate. Mr Stan- ford delivered a very excellent practical address, and there was abundant indication that what he had to say commended itseM to hio hearers. He did not exactly grow grandiloquent in language or sketch any elaborate programme of what he would do if returned. 1, I do not promise you the miUenium," observed Mr I Stanford, but will do all that one man cAn, and do it to the best of my ability." It is better to promise modestly and do what one can well than to promise a great deal and do nothing. Thsre is a great deal of promise in public life, and often lamentably little real work. Mr Stanford, evidently, is not going to follow in this groove, I although, on the other had, he will not be one to sit still with folded arms and be happy. THE DUKE'S ENGAGEMENT. Ic bus now been authoritatively announced I that Miss Shelagh Cornwailis West, younger daughter of Colonel Cornwallis West, Lord- Lieutenant of Denbighshire, is to become the Duchess of Westmmster. The Duke is to be con- granulated upon winning the affections of an extremely beautiful young lady, who will in every way add the grace of beaaty and charm of manner to the high ra.nk she is about to enter. Denbighshire people naturally fesl eKtrema pleasnue at the news, for what concerns the I family of the Lord-Lieutenant cannot be a matter of indffferepce to them. As the Mornintj Leader says, Mrs Cornwallis West's two beautiul daughters have made not merely good but brilliant marriages. We all hope for the Dak? j and his ft*ure Duchess much and continued happiness.

VRON SCHOOL. The Brymbo School Board, &t its last meeting,  decided to enlarge the Vron Board School. The work is manifestly necessary, for even now an adjoining schoolroom has te fee hired to accem- modate tke children who are clamouring to be educated. The Board has always moved with caution, and the proposal under notice has not been adopted without very careful consideration. We note that serious complaint is made conceal- ing the attendance of ehildren of parishes other than Brymbo at the Treit School. This, of course, detracts from the general result, and must be avoided. Everywhere the question of a better attendance is being considered, and it is gratifying to find that its importance is being recognised. Increased power is now given to the magistrates, and they are inclined to use it. But perhaps the most powerful agent is public opinion, and this is certainly on the side of benefitting the children. THE WREXHAM SCHOOL BOARD I ELECTION. Notices have been published that the triennial election of a School Board for I Wrexham will take place early in January next. The board consists of seven members —three Nonconformists, three Churchmen, and one Roman Catholic. The proceedings of the Board have been most harmonious, and it may be said that the work of the Board is well and carefully performed. But since the I last election a new trust has been imposed upon the Board. The old British Schools have been handed to the Board, and the magnificent new Victoria Schools have been built, and will be opened with the new century. With this new charge has come an opportunity for endeavouring to raise the bogie of religious education, and we are sorry I to learn, as we mentioned a short time ago, that an effort is to be made at the next election to make this matter a prominent feature in the fight. Those who have been to the Board Schools and know what religious instruction is given there, must be more than satisfied with it. There is no denominational bias intro- duced into it, and most people will agree that ¡ this is as jt ought to be As far as we can learn, it is proposed to make the question of religious instruction a leading question next January. How this is to be done is not made quite clear at present, beyond a suggestion that more time should be devoted to the subject. If this were all, a Board constituted as before, and elected by compromise, could do all that is necessary, but we may be quite certain that this is not all. We are glad to learn that the Educationists are prepared to do battle for the right-the right to the parent as well as the child. But we hope wiser counsels will prevail, and that the previous sensible division of parties will not be disturbed. If it is, those who seek to be innovators may rest assured that their challenge will be accepted with a cheerful confidence. We hope that matters will be arranged without the trouble of a contest, I which would certainly not be without its dis- pleasing consequences. r

PERSONAL. The Rev. Thomas Jones, rector of Llanfvllin. has decided not to accept the living of Chirk, offered him by the Bishop cf St. Asaph. A fairly large addition to the ranks of Her Majesty's counsel is expected (says the World) at the beginning of the new year. Among the well-known members of the Junior Ba.r who have applied to the Lord Chancellor for silk" is Mr Eldon Bankes. The Bishop of St. Asaph has uresente3 the Rev. Mr Clement Scott, in the Free Lance, says the Queen has taken the deepest interest in Sir Theodore Martin's biography of his gifted wife, Helena Faucit, 'I who, as everyone knows, was reader to her .Majesty, and enjoyed the close personal acquaintance of the Sovereign. In their beaatifclund eminently reHtful house in Onslow Square, where, on Sunday afternoons, a few years a-u, there were such pleasant and thoroughly informal little gatherings of really artistic folk, Sir Theodore and his graceful wife bad many tangible evidences of the affectionate regard in which this devoted and charming couple ware held by her Majesty. Lady Martin was particnlarly kind and I considerate with young actresses. She nevtr criti- | cised their work, but always spoke of such promise as thev save, and unstintingly expressed admiration for the performance of any actress whose work was really good. Lady Martin was at all times a most gracious hostess, bat never did she show to more advantage than on the occasion of the real old- tashioued children's party which she gave at Christmas-time. Grown-ups as well aa young foltt were iuvited, and there was not a touch of modernity about the whole entertainment. Wo danced quadrilles, with Sir Theodore and Lady Martin as the top couple, both executing their steps in the approved old style. Sir Theodore, after many pro- testations, sang florid ballads, and the charades were a great feature, our hostess being stage manager, dresser, and leader of the applause.

WREXHAM. -1 W R E X H WREXHAM CATTLE MARKET.—The market on Mon- day wan again crowded with fat stock, it being Messrs Jones and Sons' Christmas sale, and some 140 prime fat cattle and 350 sheep were disposed of at very good prices. Mr H. Dyke Dennis, liuabon, carried off the first prize for the best fat beast, which realised Y35. He was also successful in winning the prize for the best five fat Scotch wethers. SUDDEN DEATH.—An inque3t was held at the Victoria Inn, Wrexham, on Mondav, before Mr Coroner Wynn Evans, on the body of Emma. Prince (fifty), wife of James Prince, a sergeant in the Militia Battalion R.W.F. atiltioned at Plymouth. Mrs Prince had lived at 4, Kendrick-place, Farndon-street with her son, who left the house about six o'clock a.m., on Saturday. Returning at 4 30 p.m. he found his mother lying face downwards on the sofa. She was dead. The son stated that for some time past his mother had been drinking heavily, usually spirits. —Mr Francis Cutler, who is employed at the Cam- brian Lsather Works, said about 11.15 a.m.. when Mrs Prince called for her allowance from the local reservists' fnnd. She was under the influence of drink.—The Coroner remarked thai death was prob- ably due to syncope, and the jury returned a verdict of Death from natural causes." THE LATE Miss J. WILLIAMS.—The many friends of this young lady will bear with great regret of her death, which occurred at her residence, 3, Talbot Road, on the 27th nit. Her health had 13een the cause of much anxiety to her family and friends for about six or seven years, but having survived re- repeated re!?p6p8, h was hoped that she would -.gtin rally. Her end however, came on the date named. Before health failed she took a prominsut part in ih j Wesleyan Mission cause in Hightown, being a mem- ber from its commencement, and a Sunday school teacher for several vears. Her domestic life had been spent in families of much influence and position in the town. Her funeral, which was conducted by the Revs, J. P. Hodgson, and W. L. Powell, was attenied by, in addition to her sorrowing relatives, many of the Mission Church workers, members and Sunday School scholars. Wreaths were received from her mother, sisters, and brothers, Edgar, Sam and Alice, Lady Egerton, Mts Mason, Mrs Clarke, Mr W. Cluiton, Mrs Stokes and family, Mrs Liver- sage, Mrs Woodward. Addie and Blodwin, Fred and Rannie (Southport). Mr T. Davies, Bowling Bank, Mr E. Frauci3, Mr and Mrs Field, and the Hightown Mission Church. A memorial service which was largely attended, was held ou the Sunday following her death. ANGLI-ic.The founders' dinner of the Wrexham pnd District Angling Association was hald at Messrs Benson's Restaurant on Monday evening last, 10:h December, when twenty-five members sat down to a most excellent repast. The present (Major Lead- better) took the chair at eight o'clock, and was supported by Messrs Edisbury, Glascodine, S. Johnson, and T. P. Jones-Parry. After the loyal toasts had been duiy honoured, Mr Glascodine pro- posed The Fishing Association," which was re- sponded to bv the secretaries, Messrs Beach and A. E. Lewis. The toast of the riparian owners was propoeed by Mr A. E. Lewis, and responded to by Mr T. P. Jones-Parry, who proposed the toast of the nresident. Major Leadbetter responded, and gave a most interesting disquisition on piscatorial and piscicultural matters generally, and invited the members to accompany him to the Trevor hatchery at some early date. The ravy, army, and auxiliary forces was proposed by Mr Edisbury, and responded to by Major Leadbetter and Mr Ernest Foster. The toast of the officers of the Association was entrusted to Mr Glascodine, and was responded to by Messrs Robertshaw and Harold Davies. The cater- ing was excellent. The musical part of the evening was under the care of Mr Harold Davies, who landed a songster at every cast. LORD KENy,,5 RENT AUHT.- rho Flintshire rent audit was held at the Hanmer Arms, Hanrner, on Mondity, tbe 3rd inst., and was particularly well attended. The Denbighshire audit was held on Thursday, the 6th iust., at the Wynnstay Arms, Wrexham, and at its conclusion the tenants sat down to a dinner, prebided over by Mr T. G. lioscawen. the agent. Atter the dinner had been done justice to, and the usual loyal toasts proposed and drunk, the Chairman proposed the health of Lord Kenyon, and mentioned, as an instance of the great interest his lordship took in his tenants and estates, that he had arranged to insure all his labourers on his estates against peeid,-Illq, so as to rel'eve their employers from (I. 1 i..Ullity under the Workmen's Compensation Act.
