RECENT STRIKING TESTIMONIALS. |; July 25th, 1900. ¡; "I travel about a great deal, and in several places where I have considered the tea exceptionally good have asked the people, where do you get your tea ?' and have been told, j from some tea people named Phillips, at Wrexham, in Wales. j July 27, 1900. | One afternoon at New Brighton, near Liverpool, I remarked to the landlady that I had had better tea in the North than I was I accustomed to in the South, and said I supposed she got her tea from Liverpool. She replied, No, it comes from Wrexham.' I | thought no more of it until I visited Llangollen, Dolgelley, and ii other places, and at one or the other I again remarked upon the excellence of the tea, and was informed it came trom Wrexham, which naturally impressed me as being more or less given to good 1 tea. The other day I saw your advertisement-hence my letter." (from) H.G.S., London, W. July 18th, 1900. ii I shall be much obliged to you if you will kindly send me, as I soon as possible, as I am quite out of it, a chest of 20 pounds of I tea the same as you sent last. Here it is expensive and bad." (from) B.K.L., Hastings. July 26th, 1900. Lady presents her compliments to Messrs Phillips I & Co., and would feel obliged by their sending the same I qualities and quantities of tea she has had from them for some years past if they still recommend the quality, and the price is the same as last year. Lady would not like to give more, but was well satisfied with what she had last i year. ) (from) Lady London, S. W. The originals from which the above are extracts are entirely unsolicited. W. An important conference of teachers was held in Llangollen on Saturday. Sir Theodore Martin presided. Two curious and sad cases of unhappy wives and husbands were heard at the Wrexham Court Of County Magistrates on Monday. At the Mold Police Court, on Monday, it was pointed out that now the magistrates have the power of fining up to JE1 in the case of non-attend- ance at school. At a meeting of the Sanitary Committee of the Wrexham Town Council, a report upon the health of the town was presented which stated it to be most satisfactory and salubrious, The question of the water supply for the Cefn district has been discussed by the Cefn Parish Council. Our full report (crowded out of our columns last week) appears to-day. Agricultural readers should read the article upon the extension of the Workmen's Com- pensation Act. This Act now applies to farmed whil ZZZ Zl!ios°intorcsloa should read what has been done. ;n TM? Ge?eral Election locally has resulted in the return of the HOG. G. T. IHIS HONOUR THE JUDGE. I HIS HONOUR THE JUDGE. His Honour the Judge, Sir Horatio Lloyd resumed his duties at the Wrexham County Court on Wednesday, after his absence through indis- position. He was congratulated on his recovery by the solicitors present, and in his response he paid a tribute to the ability of his Ruegg, Q.C. With this opinion we can agre2, for the deputy-judge certainly made himself popular while on the circuit. His Honour on Wednesday was not looking quite his best, and contrary to his usual custom, he rose at rive o'clock, although there were several cases still on the list. We understand that in the future he will endeavour to avoid a late sitting. On Wednesday he was quite as painstaking as usual, and gave all suitors that patient hearing which has always charac- terised his hearings in the past. —*

WREXHAM AND A MUSEUM. We are glad to notice that at long last, what we have so often advocated is about to come to pass. A Committee has been appointed to arrange that W rexham shall have a mutoura. TheBorLiugh moves slowly, but perhaps all the more surely, and we cordially welcome whatever steps maybe taken to secure for the town some place where objects of interest—especially local interest-may Dud a suitable lictue. There is in the Free Librarv a section devoted to local books, and it has grown to fairly large proportions. With this success before us we SEe no reason why a museum should not be formed. Wrexham and its neighbourhood is not wanting in historical associations. There are old documents and old books, to say nothing of other things, which might well be deposited in charge of a competent and discriminating com- mittee. The difficulty about a home for the col- lection will no doubt be overcome, but. to CLT mind, the Willow Depot is not the nface for it.

TOY PISTOLS. We are not quite sure whether the words Toy Pistols" accurately describes the case, but on Monday a Ponkey boy was fined for having a pistol and not being possessed of a licence. It is well that the young person shou:dk-ov,; -ii--t if he wishes to carry a pistol, he must have a licence. This will cause him to p:mse, we hops, before he spends his money upon so dangerous a plivthing. We hear very much about the importanc;1 of learning to shoot, but the advice of Lrd Salisbury was hardly intended to apply to boys. The ease wish which pistols can be purchased has been often commented upon. It is a hard to punish the buyer, and leave the seller free to sell to everyone, whatever be the age. Some system of registration should be adopted, so that as soon as a weapon is bought the Excise should be informed. This would hava a whole- some effect in preventing the sale of highly dangerous playthings to that difficult prowew-- the young person.

GOOD MANNERS LACKING. Mr Chamberlain, whose wonderful energy ia the present General Election everyone watches with interest, has conducted the struggle with a want of refinement which is bound to tell against him. He sent a telegram some time ago, in which he said that "Every seat lost to the Government is a seat sold to the Boers." lIe has now declared that the word sold should be gamed. We do not think the amendment im- proves it much nor does it in any way remove the insolent suggestion that the Liberals are in league with the Boers. So serious has the charge appeared that Mr Balfour has had to explain that Mr Chamberlain did not mean what was first said, and he gave us a correct statement. Mr Balfour is a gentleman, and plays the game, and his testimony to the patriotism of the Liberals is what might be expected from one who has the instincts of the true chivalrous leader. Mr Chamberlain needs g, lesson in manners and in fairness.

A WARNING TO HEEDLESS PARENTS. I It is perhaps useless to urge some parents t. send their children regularly to school. Un- conscious of the advantages of education them- selves, they care nothing for it in respect of their children. Argument is useless, and until recently police court proceedings were but now the magistrates have the power to fine up to Xl. This is a great step in advance, and we do hope that the magistrates will not hesitate to order that the children shall not be defrauded of their educational advantages. The law says the children must be educated, and the law must be obeyed. It would be a useful thing if police constables were given something of the powers of school attendance officers. A few cases taken by the police would do very much to prevent truant I playing and the loafing about the streets, of ^hich so much is to be seen. In Germany, the police see to the school attendance. Why a. distinction should be made in the laws in this land is difficult now to see. Time was when it was feared that the use of the police force to secure attend- ance would introduce the children to the civil power at too early an age. We fancy that good reasons may now be found for revising that opinion. It would at least be worth considering. On all hands it is admitted the attendance of the children is much too low. Anything that would improve it would be welcomed on every ground.
