Durina five months' travelling we experienced scorching heat' biting cold. floods of rains, and frightful droughts in fact, we passed through all possible atmospheric changes. Almost daily we used for breakfast your cocoa, and since our settlement here we did the same from time to time, until, a few days ago, we finished the last of the 420 packets contained In the case. I have now much pleasure in stating to your satisfaction that we have not only found your cocoa most grateful and comforting for old and youne, but also that the last packet was just as good and sound all the first, after so many years* keeping, whilst the products of other makers shewed extreme decay after a few months only. In making this statement I solely have in view to render fnll justice to those who deserve it, now that so many adulterations of food are sent out to the Colonies by unprincipled firms. Yon are at full liberty to make use of the above statement, requesting oily not te publish my name.-Estate Boechdal, near Rostenburg, Trans- ?PPS'S NEW MILLS.Building News' says These extensive premises have a total front- E asag^esJto"~VHr olland-itrreet, Blaekfriare, of about 3t. The total area of the various <!oore,&c., amounts to nearly two acres, while the area of glass in the windows is about 11,OOOft." ■ — EPPS'S COCOA-" The Civil Service —' Gazette" says:—"By a thorough knowledge of the m?tnr? laws hi h govern the operations of diges. tion and nutrition, and hy a careful application of the fine properties of well-selected Cocoa, Mr. Epps has pro. videa our breakfast-tables with a delicately flavoured beverage, which may save us many heavy doctors' bills. It is by the judicious use of such ai-ticles of diet that a constitution may be gradually built up until strong enough to resist every tendency to disease. Hundreds of subtle maladies are floating around us ready to attack wherever there is a weak point. We may escape many a fatal shaft by keeping ourselves well for- tifiea with pure blood and a properly nourished frame." p]PPS S COCOA. All the Year Round" saysHaving now disposed of fancy chocolates, let us stroll to Holland-street, Blackfriars, to Epps's cocoa manufactory, where may bo studied the making of cocoa on a stupendous scale, givine: a just idea of the value of these articles, not as luxuries, but as actual food." FjPPS'S COCOA. Morning Post'Isays —"It forms the new mills and wor'cs of Messrs. James Epps and Co., the proprietors of the well-known homoeopathic cocoa bearing their name. Some half cen- tury ago Mr. James Epps, the chemist, and founder of the firm, took advantage of the removal of the prohibi. tive cocoa duties to introduce prepared cocoa as t nutritive and cheap addition to our food supply. The de. mand for this form of cocoa has increased vear by year until the annual con sumption reaches many miili on pounds. Messrs. Epps's large existing works provinT too small, the new works in Holland-street have been built on avast scale to meet the requirements of an ever-increasing con- sumption." EPPS'S COCOA. Land and Water" say.q: Through the kindness of Messrs. Epps I re- cently had an opportunity of seelnor the many complicated anavaried processes the cacao bran passes through era it is sold for public Hse, and being interested and highly pleased with what I saw during my visit to the manu- factory, I thought a brief account of the cacao and the way it is manufactured by Messrs. Epps to fit it for a wholesome and nutritions beverage, might be of interest to the readers of 'Land and Water.' FjPPS9S COCOA. — Court Journal" says.- "In a elimale so varying and trying as our own, to maintain sound and uniform health, our dailv diet cannot be too carefully and attentively studied. Advancing science and recent discoveries have within the last few years been instrumental in adding several most valuable additions to our compara- tively short list of dietetic foods. Foremost amongst these should bo ranged cocoa, which, although known here several centuries previously, only came into general use within the last forty years. One of the first to popu- larise this now indispensable adjunct to our table was Mr. James Epps, whose 'Prepared Cocoa' has gainod such just repute for its excellent and natritious charao. ter. Prepared originally on homrropathie principles, i. a soluble and convenient form, and easy of digestion, it met a pnblic demand, speedily became popular, untii now, Wessrc.Epl)s produce some fivc millions of pounds of their cocoa a year, and their manufactory is the largest of its kind in this country." EPPS'S COCOA. Cassell's Household —' Guide" says:—" We will now give an account of the process adopted by Messrs. James Epps and Co.. manu- facturers of dietetic articles, at their works in Holland- street, Blackfriars, London. Epps's COCOA.—"The Tablet" says :— This, at all events, is now generally admitted on behalf of cocoa that it not only stimulates but nourishes far more than any drink of its kird. It contributes to the waited tissues in its 'flesh-forming,' a.nd to .inim.,il combustion' in its heat-giving' properties. In the well-known Homoeopathic Cocoa" prepared by James Kpps mul Co., those tonalities are carefully pre. served and rendered pleasant, soluble and easy of diges- tion. For this reason Epps's Cocoa' has a deserTed reputation, and its popularity, with its consumption, is steadily increasing. THPPS S COCOA. John Bull" says J-i The luxuries of the last generation have in many cases b"( ome the daily necessaries of the present. A forcible illustration of this is to be found in the enormous increase in the consumption of cocoa year by year in exact proportion to the increased facilities for its manu- facture. An idea of the vast extent of this induiitry may be gained from the fact that one firm alone— that of Messrs. Epps and Co.—now sell some five millions at pounds annually." PPS S COCOA. United Service T^ Gazette" says :—" Coeoa, properly prepared, has proved not only an acceptable addition to our traditional break- fast beverages, but a welcome substitute when tea or coffee are, from choice or necessity, tabooed and Messrs Epps's appears to have been the particular form of Cocoa best adapted to meet both requirements." EPPS'S COCOA. Christian M,World", says: I If I am to take cocoa,' said I, 'I must know what it is made of; I must examine the proceqit; I mut dive into the mystery of its roanufacfure; I must see and judge for myself what are the ingredients of which it i. composed' with this view I made my way to the manu. factory of James Epps and Co., in Holland-street, Blackfriars." EPPS-S COCOA. -"Morning Advertiser" says :—' n th." middle of the seventeenth century anUt'nu-'X-ment apneaivd in one of the few journals of that period, to the cPe"t that out. of Biphopsgate-street, at a is an ox'-ellcnt West India drink calh-d ('I'OT.lato, to ^l r.f. reasonable rates! Nearly two centuries after, in 1832, the duties, which had bean pro- hibitive. were greatly reduced, and one of the first to take advantasre of re-establishing the popularity of cocoa was }Ie-srs. Kpys and Co., the Uomnronathic 'Clicmists. Naval and Military Gazette" says: T::e nutritive qualities of cocoa over either those of tea or c0:f"rf) arc now so generallv ac- knowledged that the steady incrcTse shewn by official statistics in its consumption durincr rocent years ceai cs te be a matter of snrpri e. One of the first firms to popularise this now indi^peu.- aide adjunct to oar break- fast talOo was ?Te-rs. Epps and Co., whose name, since 18f), has been so continuously before the public and wb ose Ho-ii i is familiar in our homes as the proverbial 'household wo;d- Tlure whose business it his been to watch at Messrs. Eppc's Works the elaborate and complex proer-«sc;i, and to note the care and lal our bestowed before thr; crude cocoa l ean is con- sidered rcadv for consumption, cannot but admit that the popularity Messrs. Epps's productions have secured is fully deserved." TPPPS'S COCOA. News of the World" J-J says Cocoa possesses qualities claimcd neither for tea or ciLfee, and in no fo: ill before the public are those qualities more carefully preserved than in the grateful and comforting' preparation known as Epps's Cocoa., TPPFS S COCOA.—" Church Review says :—" AIthr?Th we caunot yet boast of a free break- fast teble, still the active le'_ri-lati»n in furtherance of that object during the last h .lf century leaves us much to L-etbankfitl for. A striking instance of tbe general good resulting from the removal of heavy imposts upon our food supply is afforded by the marvellous increase to the consumption of cocoa sincc IS;?:?, np to which period an almost prohibitive duty was levied. In 1830 the total amount consumed in this country was less than half a million pounds yearly. At the present time one firm n.Ionc, that of Messrs. James Epps and Co., the Homeopathic Chemists, sell annually nearly five million pounds." IT]PPS'S COCOA. Sunday Times" says" Messrs. James Epps and Co. were among the lirst to popularise it, and their liom l opn'h'.e cocoa' steadily enjoys the re. utation it first gained ome forty years ago." tfPPS'S COCOA.Civilian" sal-s: In the 17th century, before cither tea or oii'cc had found their w?y into the Enclish markets, chocolate w?s a favourite beverage with :'i-,lic luxurious (?la?zes at that period; it then fetched an abno-t fabulous price per pound. To-day, when modern science and e iterpri~c have placed it within the reach of every class, cocoa is not only still regarded as a palatable and refreshing drink, but is valued for its nutritive and dietetic qualities. One of the first, we believe, who may he credited with introducing cocoa in its present form is Mr. James Epos." TPPPS'S COCOA. Weekly Times -1—1 says :—" In wandering over their two acres of floors, one is struck with the simplicity but completeness of the arrangements, the regard for absolute cleanliness and substitution of machinery for hand labour wherever it can be etfected, the frankness with which tlio various processes arc explaincd and shewn, and the minute care displayed in preparing the eoeoa from its initial nib state to its final form in the neat drab, Quaker-like looking packige&" tPPPS'S COCOA. Weekly Register" says" Like Bass's ale and other things, which, in our mouths, have become litertlly as familiar as house- hold words,' it is known everywhere and to everyone, and is as generally approved as it is generally known." EPPS'S COCOA. "Mining v World" siye: "The preparation of pure and nutri'ious art i< les of diet is, in point of philanthropy, noble work. The wear and tear upon Lrain and muscle in this age is growing more a\d more intense, so that without some compensating influence the end must be hopeless collapse in individuals and national decay collectively. Fresh air and more wholesome and nutri- tions diet must be had at any price. Both food and drink need great improvement. A few chemists have done great public service in this respc-t. Mr. James Epps, in the preparation of coon in its various forms, lias done more, perhaps, than any other person to supply the tables of even the poorest with a most agreeable and wholesome article of diet." ■RPPS'S COCOA. Bell's Life" says:- "This is in great measure due to Mr. James Epps, the ho- myopathic chemist, aud founder of the Ciin bearing his ^liame, who introduced upwards of half a ce.itury a'_ro a finely prepared form of cocoa in lieu of the rough and coarse compounds then before the public."

I Reviews. THE LADIES' TREASURY is well W'.ith careful reading. THE PRACTICAL FAMILY I>I:ESSMAKKK is sirun I replete with a nllmller of fashion illustrations and > interesting and useful matter relating thereto. THE DAY OF REST AND PEEP SHOW (Strahan & Co., 34, Patermoster Row) are again two excellent numbers and have interesting and instructive reading. THE SUNDAY MAGAZIXE" for April keeps up its high character as an entertaining and instructive family paper. In its pages we find a very interesting account of Mrs Daniel's work at Aldershot, with other and useful articles. GOOD WORDS.—The two new stories "The Trumpet Major" and Sarah de Berenger," fully sustain their interest. Other excellent contributions including Plain speaking," by the well-known author of John Halifax makes a most readable number. GOLDEN HOCRS part 4 (W. Poole, London) is very j attractive; besides the serial tale Was she mis- taken," by Mrs H. B. ran I, we have a good paper on Election and Electioneering in the Eighteenth Century," by G. Holden Pike," "Old Englishl pastimes," &c. [ LETTS'S POPULAR ATLAS.—Parts 2 and 3 (7d paper, Is 6d cloth) come m. ,st opportunely to hand with their excellent maps of England, Ireland, and Scot- land, and of Europe, India, and France. They are all beautifully printed, and convey a varied amount ? of useful information, never, so far as we know, issued i to the public at so marvellously low a price, or in such I a form before. THE ANGLER'S DIARY A?D TormsT FISHERMAN'S GAZETTEER. (London The Field Omce).—TIns little book will be found exceedingly nseful to all who en- gage in the pastime of angling. The first portion is occupied with a list of rivers of Great Britain, with their stations, the close seasons, cost of licenses, and the kind of fish obtainable. In the second part is in- troduced a list of the fishing stations abroad, to which is added a variety of general information indispensable to anglers who extend their operations beyond the limits of their own native land. The information is classified for easv reference. The Sunday at Homo. (Religious Tract Society) is exceedingly attractive this month, and gives us much useful reading. Its story of "The French Refugee" is very interesting, and well written. The Leisure Hour as usual has a goodly provision of reading, which will well repay the reader. The 7)? &/ Days and The .F:?-<'?e are also to hand. The ??'? <9?'? Papa is a charming magazine, and one which must be hailed with joy, especially by our boys; and The Girl's Own Paper in a similar manner by our girls. The April number fully sustains its interest. The Gentleman's .11(ifia--ine (Chatto and Windus.)— The most interesting paper in this number is that of Dr. Richardson on "Dress in Relation to Health," which is a resume of a lecture delivered at the London Institution last month. It is a most edifying paper, and one which would do many people good if they would take it to heart. Space fails us to go into de- tail or to give any extracts from this interesting lecture, but we may recommend our readers to look at it for themselves. There are other instructive and readable papers, and the "Table Talk of Sylvanus Urban is always entertaining. We cannot say much for Mr Francillon's story Queen Cophetua." It is rather duller than usual this month. In BELGRAVTA" (Chatto and Windus) the stories of Mr James Payn and Mrs Hunt are continued, as are likewise the interesting sketches of "Our Old Country Towns," by Mr Alfred Rimmer, whose sub- jects this month are Leicester, Hinckley and Bos- worth together with its battle field. Another pleasant paper by Katherine S. Macquoid, descriptive of a visit to a picturesque old fortress, in the Ardennes, the Chateau Vève-CelIes, a few miles from Dinant- sur-Meuse, is illustrated by Mr T. R. Macquoid. There is, beside, a readable paper on the old Edin- burgh Stage, by Mr H. Barton Baker, and another on Artificial Diamonds, describing the results of the experiments of Mr Hannay, of Glasgow, by which the crystallisation of carbon has been accomplished. THE Y OVXG LADIES' JOURNAL PART FOR APRIL.— The bright spring weather with which our island has been blessed this year has made the ladies all eager for the novelties of spring dress and those who are interested in it will find all the latest fashions in the April part of THE YOUNG LADIKS' JOURNAL. In the numbers, colored plate, and supplements are nearly 200 illustrations of various articles of dress for ladies and children, all of which appear to us to be most tasteful and elegant in design. Both the back and front of the enormous supplements are covered. There is a full-size pattern for jacket, and a number of fancy- work and fashion designs far exceeding the usual liberal supply. There is a very nice stripe in Berlin- wool work a supplement of the New Letter Writer, and the usual varied and interesting literature, &c., in which this journal always abounds. "l\L-\CMILLA:oI'S MAGAZINE" contains an article on "Adam Sedgwick," by the of Carlisle, who asks whether we are ever, and, if so, how soon, to have a memoir of the Professor one on "Backsheesh," the writer of which illustrates the corrupt system of government in Turkey, by stating how, in obtaining for a company of financiers a concession, which was calculated to be of considerable benefit to the imperial revenues, then at a low ebb, he was compelled to sub- sidise officials to the extent of £ 20,000, all told and another on The Shire and the Ga," being the open- ing address of Dr. Freeman to the Historical Section of the Archaeological Institute, at Taunton, in August of last year. A most valuable contribution is that of "Ireland 1840-80," by Mr W. Bence Jones, who relates the results of his experience during forty years in the management of an estate of nearly 4000 acres, in the southern part of the County Cork, of which he is the owner. CASSELL'S PUBLICATIONS.—In the Family Magazine for the month the serial story Horace McLean" in- creases in interest; Hidden Gold," the second serial, is well sustained. There are also some sixteen items of prose and poetry, fact and fiction, including inter- esting articles on the Pitcairn Islanders, the lately completed St. Gothard tunnel, hints on the art of pastel-painting, plain advice to brain-woikers, the customary chit-chat on fashion, and the omnivorous "Gatherer." In the Quinr the serials, "A Heroine of Home" and Our New Neighbours," both admir- able, healthy stories, are advanced a stage, and there is the usual excellent selection of paners on social and religious topics. What more could our Little Folk wish than the charming magazine beating the above title ? With its delightfully juvenile verses and stories it blends wisdom suitable for young minds. We wish every child possessed the Apiil number. Great Industries ■ of (in at Britain describes, among other things, the trade in raw cotton at Liver- pool, and gives a couple of local sketches. The article will be read with interest by outsiders as well as those engaged in the business. The Illustrated Book of Poultry, part 42, treats principally of the Brahma fowl. FERN PARADISE.—The third part of Mr Francis George Heath's PERN PARADISE, ("published by Messrs Sampson Low, Marston and Co.) comprises the continuation of Ferny Rambles," a chapter on The Ferny Moorlands," and the commencement of the chapter entitled Down a green lane!" The illustrations consist of a photograph (one of a series of four) illustrating the chapter on A green lane," and a full-page wood engraving from a drawing by Mr Birket Foster. Part 4 concludes the chapter entitled ] hnvn a green lane;" and commences part 2 of the volume with an "Introduction to a Fern Paradise at home," proceeding with a chapter on "Ieans to the end." The illustrations issued with this number, are, the third photograph of the series illustrating i A green lane," a full page engraving of a rustic fern stand, engravings of a ifregrate ornamented by ferns and ivy, of a glass fern-case, and of a wire basket of ferns for suspending in mid- window. The concluding parapraph is given below of the chapter on A Fern Paradise at home." Have you a dark, damp corner in your garden, where you cannot get your flowers to grow ? If you have—and few there are who have not, for everything has its shady side—throw some loose stones together in rookery form, and plant ferns there. They will revel in the obscurity of the retreat which you have chosen for them, and smile gracefully and thankfully upon you out of their dark corner. Everywhere if you will, in your gardens and in your houses, you may have a Fern Paradise"—" a thing of beauty and a joy for ever." Even the poorest of the poor, compelled by the unceasing pressure of work work work to cry, in the touching words- Oil, hut to breathe the breath Of the cowslip and primrose sweet, With the sky above my head, And the grass beneath my feet- may have, if they will, a Fern Paradise" in the saddest and most cheerless of sad homes. We have also to acknowledge Home Words, Excel- sior, The Christian Treasury, The Child's Oxen Maga- zine, The Welcome.
