The Chairman, in his opening remarks, said they were now a meeting of subscribers, whose duty it was to elect the governors, and the meet- ing would then resolve itseU into a meeting of governors for the election of a president. Mr Hugh Owen said they met in October last for the purpose of forming and adopting the constitution of the college, the text of which had appeared in print, the original had been engrossed on vellam, and he held it in his hands. The first deed was an absolute conveyance of the building from the North and South Wales Bank to Mr Hugh Pugh in consideration of the sum of 10,0002., and was dated December 29th. The second deed, which was dated January 1st, began with a recital of the college property, and pro- ceeded to convey the property from Hugh Pugh to the trustees. It was decided that the quali- fication for the office should be a gift of 1002., to the funds of the college.. There were several gentlemen who bad contributed above that amount to the fands; but only twenty-two had signified in writing their willingness to act as trustees. The second deed also prescribed the regnlations of the college in all their bearings. They had assembled with those formal documents before them, and what would be done were the first acts of a legally constituted body. The first thing was to call into existence the court of governors, and he would propose that the gentlemen whose names I were printed on the list which had been dis- tributed should be elected governors. The Chairman said they were now a meeting of governors. The first duty that devolved upon them was to elect a president, and he would ask Mr Hugh Owen to read a communication which would give universal gratification. The Rev Robert Jones said Mr Owen, being somewhat hoarse, bad asked him to read the following letter from Lord Aberdare :— Duffryn, Aberdart, Jan. 11th, 1875. My dear Mr Owen,—I am very sorry that I have been prevented, by one cause or another, from mak- ing my intended expedition to Aberystwyth, and still more so that my engagements before and after the 20th instant, will not permit me to be present at your meeting on the 20th. I am very glad to hear that you have completed the purchase of the college building oil very satisfac- tory terms. With respect to the office of President, I can assure you that I appreciate very highly the honour which the governors are disposed to bestow on me. I have not received a University Education, and have not therefore, that familiarity with the working of such an institution as membership alone supplies still if, the governors should be of opinion that my acceptance of the office would advance their generous efforts to imnrove the education of the natives of the Principality I shall not feel justified in refusing to accede to their wihes. I have omitted to thank yon for the documents you sent me, all of which I have read with m?n terest Believe me, Sincerely yours. (Signed). Hugh Owen, Esq., ABERDARE. The Rev John Griffiths, roqe to propose that the kind services proffered by Lord Aberdare be accepted. He felt sure that no gentleman in the Principality could bring a larger experience or greater qualifications to bear on the work of the eoU"ge. He had the pleasure, in company with ? ?f.nen;d Mr Owen, of going to Lord Aberdare's 83 for the purpose of asking him to accept the office of President. Lord Aberdare enqnired as 10 the financial condition of the college, and also with respect to the principles of the institution. Alter they had satisfied him by stating that the institution was in a solvent condition, and the education was imparted Hn Liberal principles, and after having asked for some time to consider his decision, that decision was coaimnnicated in the letter which had just been read. He proposed that Lord Aberdare be elected President. (Ap- plause). Professor Hughes cordially seconded the ac- ceptance of Lord Aberdare's services as president of their college-he spoke of we and our, be- cause he had that day been nominated as one of the ofifcers. (Applause). It was well to secure the services of a man who was watching the course of events, and it was perhaps as well for a young institution that its head should be a man who was open to new ideas, and who was untramelled. He had often spoken to Americans on the sub- ject of their universities, and they said to him We were unfettered, we selected frtm all in- stitutions, a bit here, and a bit there, the best from each, and it was worked admirably." After referring to Lord Aberdarp s labours with respect, to educatior, Professor Haghes concluded by hoping that the coarse which had been adopted would secure the success of the institution. The motion was then pat to the meeting, and carried unanimously. Mr John Hughes proposed that Mr David Davies, M.P., of Llandinam, be elected to the vacant office. Mr Stephen Evans cordially. endorsed all that the proposer had said, and the motion was carried. Mr Hugh Owen proposed that all the gentle- men who had contributed 5001., and upwards to to the funds of the college, and those governors who were members of Parliament, be elected vice-presidents for three years. He proposed that the following be elected :—Messrs David Davies, M.P. (Llandinam), David Davis (Maesffynon),. Lewis Davis, (Ferndale), Stephen Evans (Loiu. don), Henry Richard, M.P., Thomas Jones (Manchester), MorgaB, Lloyd, M.P., Osborne j Morgan. M.P., Samuel Morley, M.P., Eliezer I Pugh (Liverpool), J, H. The compliment was acknowledged by Mr OW«B, and the meeting was adjourned. A meeting was subsequently held j the Examination Hall,an 1 was largely attemled. The cliair was tiken by Mr Huh OweD, who was sup- ported by the rector of Neath. The Chairman referred, in his opening re- marks, to the presence that evening of Professor Hughes and Mr John Ruys, both ot -whom ^ould address the meeting. A choir then sang the Gipsy's choras, aader the leadership of Professor Pariy. The Chairman announced that Lord Aber(lare had signified his willingness to accent the cffice of President of the College, and he had been elected that afternoon. (Applause). Pressor Hughes of Cambridge, and several other eminent men had also been added to the Council. (Ap- plause). Their proceedings were, as it roiht be said, legal for the first time that day, for the first duly-constituted court of governors had been ap- pointed. Professor Hughes dwelt upon the necessity of promoting higher education in Wales, remaikicg that the present was a stage of progress, which constant endeavour should push on to perfection. It was highly desirable to interpolate iirt>veen the old centres of learning, and the grammar acd the public schools, foundations of a higher character than the latter, and be trusted tiie college of Aberystwyth would fury a-icceed in its admirable aim. He advised that they sbou!d make a speci^ ally of any subj ect, music for iDstacce; only let the college get a reputation for any one sub- ject, and he was confident the other standards would soon be brought up to the mark. He con- cluded by expressing a hope that the mnmcipal and college authorities weuld work together in lie amicable s-pirit, and would promote the interests of the college "'y uni ed action. The Rev.
