LLANDUDNO. CUURCH "SERVICE."—A tiuisical gentleman ot our ac- quaintance writes:-As I was rambling through the IrtreetIJ of Llandudno a day or so ago, I bounced upon the following singular announcement conspicuously placed upon a board adjoining the shop of a respectable tradesman" Lost, on Sunday last, in St. Tudiio' Churchyard, a Church Service." Now, Sir, I could not not make out the necessity of this little bit of news. Doubtless a good many more in this town and neigh- bourhood lost a "Church Servioe" last Sunday, but it appears that thia particular person lost theirs in St. Tudno's Churchyard. Now, then, whose fault could it be if such werethe ease ? They were in the churchyard, and they had only to go through the door into the sa- cred edifice to have found the Service." It is clear to me, that the party was so captivated by the wonderful and romantic view before them, that they became liter- ally spell-bound, and could not more from the spot into the Church, This w; natural enough; but why they should advertise such a loss, I canuot make out. Can yot,, Sir ? ?A Loca HERMIT.—A visitor to Lbndudno has sent us the following: On Thursday last, tired out with looklne at the bathers in Llandudno Bay, and watching the movements of the various visitors on the Parade, whose chief occupation see-.ned to be walking, talking, and reading bo .ks on wo.nlen seats, facing the sea., I turned in a contrary direction, towards the Bay of Con- way just to have a peep at Poninaemnavrr, and the Isle of Anglesey, but above all things to have a liitle quiet. For a mile or so I met with no object of interest; but just there, I accidentally met with a friend, with whom I had a very friendly chat. Amongst other things, he asked me if I had ever seen the Hermit's Cave, which was close by in the rock, and I said "no, where is t ? He replied, "come along with me, and I will shew it to you." After scrambling up the hill for a few minutes, we came to a small civem in the rock directly facing Conway Bav, and in which ai. Irishman named Stephcw, has resided for the last II years. This hermitage liter- ally in the rock, and bears more resemblance to \h;.t we can fancy of Robins m Crusoe's cave than anything I have ever seen before. The cave is rather, a spacious, one, but the furniture in it is not very varied. A beil, placed on the tloor, a chair, a table, and a few common and necessary utensils constitute the whole household furniture. Some time ago, Lady Mostyn visited the recluse nnd kindly presented him with an iron bedstead but this was found to be inconvenient," and it is now outside the door-way broken up. The her-mtage, I am informed, is visited ly a great numfrr of ladles and gentlemen, who occasionally give the old man a small present, so that he manage* t-> p*» throujcU life coat- • fort iblv—without a wife, and wi hout tnlt. d r.djery of much'labour; the old man is content and happy, and would not quit his cave in the rock, not to be removed even to Penrhvn CasMe. CONCERT.—OU Thursday evening a mis«ellan JOUS Concert was given in the Infant School, in thwtmvn, by Signor Jacob witch, (what's in a name ?) in which he was assisted bv Madame Jaeobowitch and h's son. The.; n- cert was attended by a small, but select and tas-teenaUe, number of the inhabitants and visit >1'8. We are sorry to say we cannot give an unqualilied approbation of the performances. The "Signer," in times past (he r; an old man now) might have been a great musical genms, and minht have electrifiefl the Czar of Russia, and the Ki»" of Prussia, and so forth, by "sweet and dulcet Strains;" but if so, there must have been a sad "falling. ofl" since then, for, with the exception of Kale Britan- nia," bis singing was really very bad, and outre: to a ?- qvee The son might play the violm very ?r,,dit?bly, as he fingers will, and has a good command of the bow; but he substitutes caprices" for standard pieces, and therefore fails. His particular defect is a deficiency in musical articulation. In vocal singing, too, he has not a bad voice but as he insists on warbling forth maudlin sentimental songs, for which his voice is not adapted, and rejects manly ones, which would suit him much better, he creates ridicule instead of ensuring applause. He sang, however, Form, Riflemen, form pretty well, and for once received a rouud of hearty and sin- cere applause. The Signora" plays upon the hat p and the piano, and, in both, exhibits both skill and taste. Upon the harp she plays indifferently well-there being rather too much stiffness but her performance oil the piano was reallv magnificent, as her manipulation was perfect, and her taste aud judgment of the first order. In a less critical company, the concert might have passed off with some amount of eclat but effete attempts to burlesque Braham will not do amongst the visitors of the town of Llandudno. The prices charged were high, and we have reason to believe that many more tickets were sold than were availed of, and of this we are glad. THE DEAN OF OXFOHD.—It is well known that the Dean of Oxford is a great admirer of LIandudno and its neighbourhood so much so, that he is now building a mansion, about a mile from the town, and right on the border of Conway Bay, the view from this place is mag- nificent, as it commands au extended prospect of the sea, Penmaenmawr, and the Snowdonian range of moun- tains, and the Isle of Anglesey. The building is built chiefly of patent brick, red and white, from Ruabon, and altogether it is one of the most beautiful structures in the locality. It is now nearly completed, and it is ex- pected that the Dean will come and reside there during the present season. We understand that the building was stopped for a time, by reason of a misunderstand- ing with the original contractor; but about three months a, o, the work was pissed into the hands of Mr. R. Wil- Hana builder and contractor, Carnarvon; an I uoder management of his son, Mr. Hd Williams, the mansion is now all but finished-the work having been pushed oil with commendable rapidi'y. This marine residence is well sheltered from the north by high r. a is :m ncdi- ately in its rear, and when the grounds are completed it will form one of the most beautiful and romantic man- sion8 in or around Uandudno. EJECTION OF IMPBOVHMBNT COMM IBSIOITF RB.-ON Thursday hist, the 17th inst., the annual meeting for the election of Commissioners, under the "LlandDdno Jm- provement Act, 1854," took place at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, in the Infaut School-room, Church Walks, the Rev. M. Morgan in the chair. The proceedings were opened by the Clerk (John Wil- liams, Esq.) reading the minutes which took place at the meeting held on Monday last. Printed copies of the statement of accounts for the year ending July 3rd, were then handed over to be examined by the ratepayers pre- sent at the meeting. From this abstract it would ap- pear that the payments for the past year amounted to £1,47111s. 8d. (including interest on loan, and payment of 3rd instalment); whilst the receipts amounted to jEl,296 4s., leaving a balance due to the Treasurer of £275 lIs. 8d. The total balancc to next year is X204 4s. M., which the Clerk accounted for by the poundage being put a little too low. whilst in some items, such as for sewerage, the sums allowed had been slightly ex- ceeded. Mr. Tuos. JONES, Froudeg, then proposed, and Mr. Evan Hughes seconded, that the minutes of the previ- ous meetings be approved and sanctioned, which, on be. ing put to the meeting by the Chairman, was carried unanimously. The statement of accounts, the chief items of which were read by the Clerk, were approved and agreed to, on the motion of Mr.Prichard, seconded by Mr. T.Jones. The following gentlemen were then unanimously ap- pointed auditors to examine the yearly statement of ac- counts :—Mr. Jones, Plasmadoc; and Mr. Watkins, grocer. The next business was the election of Commissioners, in the room of the seven following, who are to retire by rotation, subject, of course, to re-election Robert Hughes, Mostyn-street; Mr. Thomas Owen, Craigydon Mr. James Williams, Marine Parade; Mr. I. Davies, St. George's Hotel: Mr. John Williams, Wyddfyd; Mr. F. Madren, Mirine Parade; and Mr. John Williams, Gad- Iy. Ho e. The following partiss were thon nominated to serve as Commissioners for the next three years Mr. Thomas Owen, Mr. J. B. Evans, Mr. O. Thomas, Mr. I. Davies, Mr. John Williams (Gadlys House), Mr. Madren, Mr. Thomas Williams, chemist, Mr. S. Barclay, and Mr. Richard Jones, builder. > A poll being demanded, it was agreed that it should take place from 9 o'clock on Monday morning next until 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Mr. Thomas Jones, Froudeg, then moved a vote of thankl to the Chairman for presiding, which, after being seconded, was carried with applause. The reV. gentleman, in replying, said he hogged to thank the Commissioners for their hearty co-operation during the past year, and for the kindness which they always shewed towards him. He was sorry to say, how- ever, that there were some dark spots before them for the coming year, and it behoved them to consider the matters whioh would be brought before them very seri- ously. If they did so, he had no doubt but, by the help of God, they should succeed in removing the eloulls which now threatened them. He begged to thank them for the compliment which they had paid him. The meeting then broke up.

=- AMERICA. SOUTHAMPTON, JULY 17.—The North German Lloyd steamer Bremen, from New York on the 5th instant, has arrived WASHISOTOS, JULY 4.—The Richmond Examiner of July 2 gives the following relating to the battle of Mon- day. It says, on Sunday morning Generals Hill and Longstreet, with their divisions, crossed the Chickaho- hiny, and late on Monday, p.m, attacked the enmy about five miles north-east of Darlingtown, on the New- market road. The conflict was terrible; and by 8 30 p.m. the enemy had been driven back a mile and a half. At half-past nine, being heavily reinforced, the enemy made another stand. The loss here on the enemy's side was terrible. The situation being hopeless against such overwhelming forces, General Hill slowly retired. At this moment, seeing their adversary retire, the most vo- ciferous cheers arose from the whole of the Yankee line. The fight ended therefor the night. The Examiner say s it thinks the divisions, which went into fight QD Friday 14,000, strong, could only number 6,000 men for ditty on Tuesday, and that the loss of life exceeds that of any battle or series of battles yet fought. It also says that Jackson and Huger's division attacked M'Clellan s left flank, on the west side of the Chickahoininy, seventeen miles from Richmond later in the day Magmder fell upon his right flank. Fighting was going on until Tues- day night. The above extracts from the Examiner relate to the Tuesday's battle, in which Gen. M'Clellan's despatch of ye-itentay said the enemy were badly beaten.
