At the Birmingham seS8ions, the other day, Jeremiah Tasker was charged with having stolen a saddle and some harness. The jury found the prisoner guilty, but re- commended him to mercy. Upon the Deputy-ehrurmaii asking the ground of the recommendation, the jury said they had great doubts as to the prisoner being guilty of the offence! Prisoner was sentenced to six months' hard labour. TRIAL FOR MURDER IS IREIASD.—Tiallee, Thursday. -In the case of Philip Michael Foley, charged with the murder of Philip James Foley, at Killorglin, on the 25th of April last, the jury found a verdict of "Wilful murder," at 9 30 last Dight.-The deceased and the prisoner were cousins. A letter from Alexandria, of the 29th June, in the Progrea of Lyons, Sa.YB-" The rise of the Nile has com- menced, and the Government, in view of the inviiidatiori, is adopting precautionary measures. The heat is excea- sive here. The works on the Isthmus of Suez, are being urged on most energetically. There are upwards of 25,000 men at present employed in cutting the canal. The news from the Lebanon is not satisfactory, as it is said the Druses of the Harem testify some intention of again rising against the Christians." THE VICEROY OF Eryrt.-His Highness the Viceroy of Egypt gave an entertainment in oriental style on board his yacht, on Wednesday, in order to testify his appreciation of the hospitality he has received during his visit to England. Covers were laid for 50 persons. The Duke of Cambridge and some other members of the royal family were present, also five of the cabinet ministers, the speaker of the House of Commons, the Lord Mayor, several foreign princes, the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton, and the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland. The banquet passed off admirably. No- thing could surpass its magnificence, some of the dishes, of Sevres china, cost 100 guineas each. The Viceroy drank only water, that of the Nile, during the banquet. BREACH OF PROMISE OF MARRIACE.—A case of this character was heard in the Secondaries' Court, London, on Wednesday. Judgment having been allowed to go by default, a writ of inquiry was issued to assess the damages. The plaintiff, Elizabeth Nastinore, was a ,10- mestic servant, and had been in the family of the (le, fendant's father, Mr. May, a pork butcher, at Reading, in which business the defendant assisted. The courtship had gone on from 1856, and the defendant was now married. A number of letters written by the defendant to "Lizzy, his own dear love," were read, and were couched in affectionate and becoming language, In 1ay last the defendant wrote to his "dear Lizzy," after he was married, hoping that she would be able to bear it; it had OCGUlTCd through family circumstances, and he complained that he had trouble enough, and had only a bare living. The wedding dress of the plaintiff was made before she discovered that he was married. The defendant's father's name was Thomas, and" J. Day was over the door. The jury assessed the damages at £ 100.
