Most beef made from 6d to 6td per lb, while other qualities fetched 5,1d per lb. Mutton realised from 8d t,, 8id per lb. PiRs averigcJ 7. 6d per score lb., a", pork pig's 111,le from 7s 9d to 88 per score lb. There were many dairy cows ou offer, an] these sold at from £'5 to Y 19 each. ABEnrELE UNBAI; DISTRICT [ COUNCIL. I AN EXTRAORDINARY DEADLOCK. The first meeting of the new Urban District Council was held in the Town Hall, Abergele, on Monday. All the members were present. The Rev. DAVID EVANS (vicar of Abergele) proposed that Mr J. P. Earwaker be appointed provisional chairman. Dr. WOI.STENHOLME seconded. Mr THOMAS EVANS proposed an amendment that Mr Thomas Williams take the chair, Mr W. ELLIS, J.P., seconded. Both motions on being put by the clerk received six votes each, the first named can- didate voting for himself. The CLERK said they were now at a deadlock. It was not the first time he had known such a deadlock to take place. In his capacity as solicitor to the Parish Councils Association he had been asked for his opinion in two similar cases which had taken place, one in the west of England and the other at Gorton, Lancashire. He suggested that if the members were foolish enough to allow politics, religion, or party feeling to interfere in any way in their voting for any particular man as chairman and thereby ignore the interests of the ratepayers, it was impossible for any work to be don#. He could only repeat that advice to them, but under the circumstances the only remedy to his mind that could be adopted was for one member to be absent and vote again. Mr J. P. EARWAKRIT said the case at Gorton was when the permanent chairman was boing appointed. The CLEBK said his remarks applied to either case. It being decided not to elect a permanent chairman, Mr J. COPPING proposed that Mr J. P. Earwaker be chairman for the next three months. He had been their chairman for nearly seven years, and had filled the position with honour to himstlf and credit to the old board. He believed not a single unpleasant word had passed between him and any member during his tenure of office. Mr W. ELLIS, J.P., seconded the motion, which was supported by Mr Thomas Evans. Mr EARWAKKR thanked the members of the Council for their kind expressions of opinion, but asked to be excused from taking tlieposition.1 He bad been chairman for a long spell, and if he acted any longer he considered it would be a hardship for the other members who were equally qualified for the office. During the last few months his health had been very bad, and during the coming year he was ,tnx,ous to be spared as much public work as possible. Although pressed by the Council Mr Ear- waker still refused to take office. Mr EARWAKER proposed that the Vicar of Abergele be chairman. If ho was elected he would have a seat on the local bench, and as the rev gentleman was as good a Welsh speaker as an English speaker he would be a decided acquisition to a bench, all the members of which with one exception could not speak a word of Welsh. He believed he would make an excellent magistrate. Mr HANNAH (a mew member) seconded. Mr ROGERS (stationmaster) proposed as an amendment that Mr William Ellis, J.P., be chairman. He was the heaviest ratepayer in the town, and had done as much for the working classes as anybody. He was already a magis- trate, and therefore could not covet that honour, but he would undoubtedly feel it a great honour to be elected chairman, and it would be showing respect to a fellow townsman. Mr THOMAS EVANS seconded the amendment. On being put to the meeting six voted for Mr Ellis and six for the vicar. The CLERK said they were at another dead- lock. His anticipation had turned out to be correct. The VICAB The ballot boxes ought to settle this question, and I wish it could go to the poll. MrTH"MAS EVANS I hope you don't blame us because you are not elected. The CLERK If anyone is to blame it is your- selves as a body. Mr THOMAS EVANS Our side won't give in. Mr COPPING Nor ours. The CLERK The only thing to do is to ballot for a member to leave, and then vote again. Yon can draw lots for one member to retire. After discussion Dr. WOLSTKNHOLME pro- posed that the meeting be adjourned for a week. The motion at first did not meet with approval. Mr COPPING said it was a nice state of things. Here they had no board. Who was going to look after the parish ? They as yet had no right to spend any money. Tho CLRItE: said it. was a serious matter. The old board died on the last. day of the old year, and so far there was really no new authority to carry on the work of the parish. Mr ROBERTS (El Teb) proposed that Mr Copping be chairman, but that gentleman declined the position. As to being a magis- trate he had declined that honour loug ago. He came there to work, not to seek honours. He had great pleasure in proposing that Mr Tate Mason, J.P., be chairman. Itivasapity they had to look outside the Council, but there appeared to be no help for it. Mr ELLIS seconded. Mr ROBKHTS (El Teb) said there were twelve members present. It was an insult to the Council to go outside for a chairman. On the motion being put eight voted for All, Mason Mr EABWAKRR said Mr Mason had refused to allow himself to be nominated as a candidate,as he had had no experience. He would certainly never accept the position of chairman. They h->d far better adjourn. It was ultimately decided to adjonrn the meeting for a week, and in the meantime the clerk to ascertain whether Mr Mason would stand. If he does not the Council will be in the same deadlock next Monday.

No one will readily forget the boisterous weather whioh ushered in most of the guests on Saturday afternoon. But by the time dinner was over we had become prepared for the round of enjoyment which was to commence with a vocal and instru- mental concert in the Recreation Room, at eight o'clock. This, as all other musioal programmes of the week was of first rate order, and enjoyed by all. The arrangements for the week were in the hands of the following thoroughlyoompetent oommittee -Mr F. Houghton (obairman), Mr Peroy Gibbs, Mr Charles A. Moses aud Mr Thompson Jowett,and everyone was more than satisfied with the manner in whioh they discharged their dnties. A slight shower on Snnday morning aoconnted for the somewhat small number who went as usaal to Llandrillo Church, though those who ventured were rewarded with a bracing walk, and absence of more roin. The evening service in the drawing- room was conduced by Mr Smith and made specially interesting by the singing of some carols by the staff. After supper a very enjoyable sacred ooncer: fill op the remainder of the evening. It might be as well to give the names of the ladies and gentlemen who, at this concert and others, rendered admirable service —Mesdames F. Donnison, C. A. Moses, and R. B. Parry Misses Anderson. Charlton, Gibbs, Shackleford, and Wills Messrs F. Donnison, Fielding, P. Gibhe, Stanley Green, Innocents Kingerlee,Moses, Porter- field Rynd, and Turner. To all of thes', and all others who contributed to the company's enjoy- rrent, our hearty thanks are given. Unfavourable weather prevented the proposed mountain tour for Monday, but this added perhaps additionul vigour to the dance which was entered into with sarh spirit to the strains of the efficient band engaged for the week. Christmas Day was celebrated in true English style, with Christmas dinoei- well to tho front. Menu:—Soope à la reine, salmon, Hollaudaise sauoe, chicken and mushroom patties sirloin of beef, saddle of mutton, haunch of venison, roast pheasant, boiled turkey, roastgoofe; plum pud-iing, mince pies, Charlotte Rusee, rice pudding merin- gues, wine j,Uks, Italian creams; butter, cheese, b19cui!8, c,,ffe? pints, grapes, bananas, oranges, bonbons, do., &0. During diuner in acoordanos with onstom six ladi-s made a collection for the Cottle Hospital, which reached the handsome sum of £10 2s. Various comnlimentiry speeches followed, and toasts were proposed and drunk with musical honours. After dinner a concert, and dance closed the day's rouud of pleasure. Boxing night brought round what wss probably the event of the week-the fancy dress ball-whioh was a conspicuous sucoess. Notice having been given that a fancy dress ball would he heln, visitors came prepared and many and varied costumes were the result. Although it may seem invidious to Binglo out any for spacial notice, yet it may be interesting to mention a few of the various characters imperson- ated. Mrs Morrison as Magpie was very effective, as was also Miss Samoells as an TSsyotian princess. Miss Broadway made a charming Minnie Palmer, and her sister was pqually successfnl as a Welsh fish girl; Mrs Colbert waq a brilliant Carmen. The seasons were represented by Mr as Winter, Miss Turner as Harvest, Miss B. Clarke as Spring, and Mr C. H. Baines as Snmme-; Miss Bayley as Bo-Peep, Miss Ellis Jowett a sweet Marpery Daw, Miss Andserson as Butterfly, and Miss Grace Stanley as Slate Penoil put in a piea for child life. Mra Lees as the Order of the Bath l"oked very effective as well as novel. Miss Lloyd Parry was Snowflake, Mrs F. R. Donnison appeared as Rosalind, and Miss E. M. Everard as a Grecian Girl. Miss Donnison was very successful as Gretohen, and Miss Torner equally so a, a Lady of 18'h Century, Of the gentlemen, Mr G. Donnison as Friar Tuck created much amusement, as also Mr Jowett as Pierrot. Mr Firth, in the riual character of Irishman and Titus Rags, was the hit of the evening, though Mr Rynd as Dr. Faustus ran well for first place. The foreign element was stronq with Mr O. A. Moses as French Zouave, Mr H. 8. Wvnne ae Neapolitan Fisherman, Mr W. L. Wynn. a Matador; Mr Roth, a Gondolipr; and Mica Ander- son aft a Neapolitan Flower Girl, with a host of others equally I1()or1 in their respective characters The Army and Navy were fairly represented also with Mr Smith and Mr W. A. Bain ao Carf>'ne, Mr F. qinrlle and Major Place in officers' Mise Dress, Mr Stanley Green a Man 0 Wiri Man, and Mr Percy Gibbs a. Lord Neleon. The pa.t century wae taken up by Mr F. G. Hindle, Mr Rfidd, Mr C. H. Pedley, and Mr A. P. Donnison, He Old Fnglish Gentlemen, Cbevalier Fr"elich as Davy Garrick was first rate, and BI<o Air F S. Donnison as Orlando. Law was championed by Mr White who appeared ss Sergeant Bnzfoz. Mrs Tom Bower appeared ss a Corsican Dancing Girl, and Mrs W. H, Pl-ice was Paulirp Mr J. B. Brondwav made a good Italian, and Mr Miinpr a powerful-looking Planter. The culinary department sent a Chef in Mote. Dixon, and Mr A. D. Turner was a capital Hu man. Mr Shakeslord's family took r-spectively Egyp- tian Courier, Fairy, and Paritau, and ail looked well, lIfrs Mellcr appeared as a Gipsy, Miss Burton as Ma "ie Antoinette, and Miss Dawes as Girasol. These together with others made up a Bene of brilliant colour, beauty and variety. Dancing was kept up till 11.30, when all pronounced it by far the beat fancy dress ball Craigiide had ever known. Tableaux vivants occop;ec1 the first part of the eveningof the 27th, and thanks to the enercy of Mr Houghton and Mr P.-rcy Gibbs, a very excllent programme of 12 tableaux was arranged and carried through. All were very good, though The Snow QUPSTJ," "Portrait of a Gentleman," "ThrAO Beggars." and A Chin of the old Block" came in for the most hPMty Applause. Under the guidance of M. Riviere, a Frenchman who has resided at Llandudno, a large and somewhat motley assembly gathered at the other end of the town to dance jigs, valses, quad- rilles, and polks, in bizarre and somewhat pro- miscuous fashion. Some were dressed in masquer- ading costume, while others wore masks. The only exception that could be taken to this al fcsso fri-king ou a September night in the climate of Wales was tbe same r.8 that complained of by Horace Walpole, when, in 1770, he visited Stowe to meet Her ftoysl Highness the Princess \melia. H, Iieece, in grateful recognition of the recovery of his only daughter st Llan- dudno from what was deemed a hopeless malady. Perhaps the most interesting monument in the simple primitive churohyard is that whioh beara the inscription, In loving remembrance of Leonard Bright, son of John Bright, M.P., and Margaret Elizabeth, his wife, who died at Llan- dudno, Nov, 8fn, 1864, aged nearly six years. One other attraction offered by Llandudno de- mands passing notice, and will be found in the drives to the neighbouring lakes, mountains, churches and villages-drives which are inex haustible in number and variety. To begin with, there is the Matiue Drive," five miles and a half in length, which was compleied in 1879, and runs round the base of the Great Orme's Head, and is said to bo the finest, of its kind in existence. Another, which will perbapII recall to Scottish tour- ists the awful "Pass of Glencoe, is that from Llandudno to Penmaenmawr, which shares with (Jolwyn Bay t"8 distinction of being Mr Gladstone's favourite watc-ring-pluce. At tbe other end of the bay a road runs between the Little Orme's Head and Mynydd Pentre, which ascends a height from vhich'Rhyl and the hills above the Vale of Clwyd are clearly peroeptible. Every day excellent steamers ply from Liverpool to Llandudno and back, and a ferry aoross the mouth of the Conway shortens the distance to Penmaenmawr, presenting a beautiful view of the Menai Straits, Beaumaris, aud Puffiu Island; while beyond lie Bangor and Peurhyn Castle, with Gloddaeth Wood and Pydew Mountain in the distance. Let me now revert to the main purpose with whiob these remarks have been written. I have said that during the JaM two Saturdays of my second visit to Llandudno Hyperboreau gales, not nnmixe 1 with snow, made it difficult to stand upright on an exposed hill, an ohurned the sea in,o a seething mass ot foam. On returning tT the little town you will find -un(icr the lee of the Great Orme's Head -a terrace of shtlti-red houses which no rough breeze cau visit, and where perfect peaoa and tran- quillity snbsit-t at the heart of endles agitation." Hither, a few years ago, the lite Dr. Hatohard of Ebury-atroet—one of the most skilful and devoted of London physicians—bent his steps, aft,r in vain passing three or fourwintere at Mensone, Niee, and other towns on the Riviera, He ended by pitahing his camp at Llandudno, where, p.-oteoted by the Grellt Orroo's Hiad and surrounded by English comforts, be found himself less tormented by bronchifs and asthma that in the softer air of Italy and Southern Franoe. In the salubrity and dryness of its atmosphere lies, in fiat, the advan- tage of Llandudno as a winter residence. When I add that on a clear day the panorama to be seen from the summit of the noble promontory on the left flank of the little town embraoes the Isle of Man and the hills of the English Lake District, enough has been said to show t,h9t Llandudno is worthy of a visit from Lon- doners tired of the familiar pleasures offered by Brighton and the South Coast. Finally, it will ha foucd that, both for riding horses and carriages, there is a fixed tariff that sea-fishing iu perfection awaits all who care to indulge in it and that visitors anxious to enjoy the most comprehensive view of the town and bay should take a trip to Liverpool by oue of the steamers running thither daily and back, from the deok of which a sea and laud ocptpe unsurpassed for beauty and variety in any part of the world may be contemplated with ever-increasing delight and satisfaotiuu.—" Daily Telegraph."

I Addressing a meeting of his supporters at I Arthur's Assembly Rooms, Bangor, laet week, Mr j Lloyd George, M.P., expressed himself gratified that the Conservatives had at last found a champion to oppose bim at the next election in the fight for the representation of the Carnarvon Boroughs. He bad a fatut recollection of having onoe tried a fall with tb Conservative candidate, in which, if his memory did not fail him, he (Mr Lloyl George) did not come off second best. THE DIVERSION OF A WELSH WATER COURSE. On Saturday the resumed hearing of the civil action in which John Garner, farmer, Scuborisa Farm, Ruthin, and Mary Ann Garner, added as plaintiff, applied for an injunction to restrain Joseph Smith, ofBaeherig Farm, Llan- fair, Dyffryn Clwyd, near Ruthin, from wrong- fully diverting a water course, was held before Judge Sir Horatio Lloyd, in the Town Hall, Rhyl. Mr Marshall, Q.C. (instructed by Messrs Sharpe and Finchett, solicitors, Chester), appeared for the plaintiffs, and Mr Bryn Roberts, M.P. (instructed by Messrs Lloyd and Roberts, solicitors, Ruthin), for the defendant. The case for the plaintiffs, who alleged that by the diversion of a stream which passed along- side the two farms in question, defendant had caused them great inconvenience and loss, for which they claimed damages, being concluded on Friday evening, Mr Bryn Roberts opened for the defence on Saturday. He contended that they were fully entitled to divert the stream provided they re-turned it back, and he was supported in his view by Embry and Owen, which was the leading case on the sqbject. As a matter of fact they did re-turn it,and literally speaking, did not use it at all. Defendant find- ing that his water supply was running short, merely dammed the stz-cam-not in a way as to divert the whole of the wIÜer-and run a portion along a trench into the farmyard where it worked several turbines, and then proceeded in another direction back to the stream, so the plaintiff got the same quantity that he had been in the habit of getting. That was done immediately the defendant understood that there was really a ground of complaint. It was also done before the writ was issued, and not, as his learned friend stated, afterwards. He maintainedthat what they had done increasedand not decroased the supply of water to Scubor- issa Farm. The water had been gauged at different points by engineering experts and it was found that the now was between 20,000 and 40,000 gallons per day, when the machinery was not in motion. The plaintiffs had attempted to show that the water when returned was not fit to drink, but the parties in the case had never complained about the water being bad. The male plaintiff admitted that he had not com- plained to anybody, and even Mrs Garner, who said she had done so, confessed in cross-examin- ation that it was only to her husband. The question of pollution had been draggod in by the expert witnesses. He submitted that an injunction ought not to be granted unless there was permanent and substantial injury, which in this case there was not. It had been stated by witnesses that the stream during the last two summers was dry owing to the action of the defendant, but it was a matter of common II knowled:yo that last summer and the summer before ';ere most exceptionally dry 8umme and that the greater part of the country was suffering from drought. Evidence having been given by Mr THOMAS BLUST, county analyst, who deposed that although both samples of water, one taken from the pure stream and the other from the alleged polluted portion, were slightly turbid, they were quite fit for consumption. Mr Storr, water and civil engineer, Wrexham, C ilonel Lloyd Williams, surveyor, Denbigh, and John Morris, sanitary inspector, Ruthin, gave evidence as to the impossibility of the water being contaminated while returning to the stream through the farmyard, and that the dam merely consisted of a few sod. and small boulders which was not watertight. Counsel on both sides again addressed the c urt, after which his Honour said he would reserve judgment.
